Gottlieb Daimler applied for a patent for an engine with a vertical cylinder which he had developed together with Wilhelm Maybach from the 1883 horizontal test engine

Patented on 1 April 1886 under patent DRP No. 3492, the engine represented a fundamentally new design, since for the first time the crankshaft assembly and flywheel were enclosed in an oil and dust-proof crankcase.
