Just returned from a testdrive of the base SL: the V6 SL350. It uses the engine found in cars like our E320, except here, it is bored out to 3.7-l and horsepower jumps up to 245-hp, torque from 315 Nm (232 lb/ft) to 350 Nm (258 lb/ft). Mercedes claims a 7.2 0-62 mph time for the SL350. I was expecting this car to be “adequate” in terms of performance but surprisingly, it offers much more than adequate performance. Performance won’t touch an SL500, but it sure isn’t a slacker unlike the SL280 and SL320 / 320SL’s of the previous generation R129 SL’s. (more…)

This morning I got to testdrive the B200 Turbo, the top-of-the-line B-Class. 193-horsepower @ 5,000 RPM and 280 Nm (206 lb/ft) of torque to the front wheels from a 2034cc 4-cylinder gasoline engine with a turbocharger. Great car I have to admit. I came away very impressed with the performance of the B200 Turbo. (more…)

I was able to get behind the wheel of the top-of-the-line diesel B-Class, the B200 CDI. Based on my negative experience with the last two B-Classes, I seriously wasnt expecting anything remarkable here either. Weak brakes, a steering sensitivity that was too light and a boat-like suspension were some of the things I was expecting here. On the positive side, I knew the B200 CDI would be a quick and agile car thanks to that wonderful diesel upfront. (more…)

I never much got a chance to drive a W210 E-Class. The only experiences I had with driving W210s was on the used car lot, but that only included moving the cars from here to there for a few meters. Well, I had to go to Landshut and bring back a used 1998 E430 T-Modell (estate) and in exchange for a used 2001 C220 CDI T-Modell (S203). I didnt know I was going to be driving back in an E430 until I got there. Anyway, I couldnt take pictures of the C220 CDI since I had to take a female colleague to Landshut with me. Thankfully, she was nice and talkative and it was a great drive. The C220 CDI was a fun car too. Ive driven the facelift sedan version as well and it drove much better than this pre-facelift C220 CDI. Not much to say about the C-Class. The 5-speed A/T was smooth and responsive, the 2.2-l 4-cylinder CDI engine was powerful, torquey and agile and surprisingly quiet. Handling was decent but nothing sporty, but the steering feel was pretty nicely weighted. Yep, thats about it. (more…)

I’ll skip the SLK200 Kompressor part because it was a similar one as to yesterday’s version. Damn, that’s 3 (three) SLK200 Kompressor’s I’ve driven already! 5-speed automatic transmission, leather and nicer rims were the only extra cost options I detected on this one. Color was Cubanitsilber (smoke silver). Very nice car. This time I had to drive it to Landshut because the SLK was sold already and I was just the middle man to drive it to Landshut 60 km away and pick up a used C200 Kompressor Sportscoupe. I cruised up there with the SLK200 Kompressor, topless of course to enjoy the sun and make more room for my Afro (:p]), and it was a most pleasant journey. Boy, those SLK’s are really fun and the ‘200 even with the A/T isn’t bad at all.

I was able to take a brand new E200 Kompressor with the sports package for a long drive to Landshut. The bad news? I had to bring a customer with me to the dealer over there so that meant I couldnt really drive my way or stop to take nice pictures on the way, especially since the guy next to me turned out to be such a sour old grandpa.
