Mercedes-AMG at the 83rd International Motor Show in Geneva

Affalterbach/Geneva (CH) – Mercedes-AMG is embarking on a new era: the A 45 AMG will have its world premiere at the 83rd International Motor Show in Geneva, Switzerland. For the first time in the company’s history extending back over more than 45 years, Mercedes-Benz’s performance brand is offering a fascinating high-performance vehicle in the compact class.

In addition to the new A 45 AMG, Mercedes-Benz’s high-performance brand will be presenting four other exclusive AMG high-performance automobiles in Geneva, in the guise of the E 63 AMG S-Model, the CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake S-Model, the SLS AMG Coupé Black Series and the C 63 AMG “Edition 507”.

To tie in with the world premiere of the A 45 AMG, Mercedes-AMG will also be announcing its collaboration with Monster Cable Products, a leading US manufacturer of high-end headphones. The collaboration is to be launched with a special product line by the name of “Monster DNA Headphones Inspired by AMG”.

“We are continuing our unique model initiative with our new AMG high-performance vehicles,” states Ola Källenius, CEO of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

“The new A 45 AMG, our first vehicle featuring a four-cylinder turbo engine in the compact class, is representative of the “AMG Performance 50″ growth strategy which was adopted in 2012 with the aim of expanding the model range from 22 to 30 vehicles by the time of our 50th birthday.”

As part of the ambitious “AMG Performance 50” strategy for the future, Mercedes-Benz’s high-performance brand set itself the clear goal of increasing worldwide sales from around 20,000 vehicles to over 30,000 in the next five years.

With this initiative, the company from Affalterbach clearly has its sights set on dynamic growth. Numerous new AMG automobiles with highly efficient drives are to be launched, including the newly developed AMG 2.0-litre turbo engine – the most powerful series production four-cylinder turbo engine in the world.

With the new A 45 AMG, the top model of the Mercedes-Benz A-Class, Mercedes-AMG is also appealing to new customers: spanning the age range from 30 to mid-40, the target group is younger than the classic AMG clientele to date.

A-Klasse

All-wheel drive will also play an increasingly prominent role at Mercedes-AMG,  not only on board the new A 45 AMG but also for other AMG high-performance vehicles. This year, the E 63 AMG and the CLS 63 AMG have also become available for the first time with a performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive system.

In future, the Affalterbach-based company will additionally be responsible for the development and production of all V12 engines of the Mercedes-Benz brand. A further aim of “AMG Performance 50” is the systematic reduction of fleet fuel consumption, with a CO2 emissions level of 200 grams per kilometre targeted for the entire AMG model range by the time of Mercedes-AMG’s 50th birthday.

AMG is already best in class in many segments in terms of fuel consumption, emissions, maximum output and torque. The “AMG Lightweight Performance” strategy will see a further systematic reduction of vehicle weight in future. It is also planned to open up new, dynamic markets.

A-Klasse

A key role will be played here by the AMG Performance Centers, the number of which is to be increased from the current total of 270 Centers in 24 countries to around 350 Performance Centers by 2017.

Mercedes-AMG as the technological spearhead of Daimler AG

The three letters “AMG” embody automotive high performance, exclusivity and dynamic driving pleasure. Founded in 1967 by Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher, AMG’s image as the successful performance brand of Mercedes-Benz is underscored by impressive successes in the world of motorsport and its unique vehicles.

Today it is a fully owned subsidiary of Daimler AG and is the group’s technological spearhead in the high-performance car segment. The AMG brand claim “Driving Performance” stands for cutting-edge technology and a thrilling driving experience.

A-Klasse

The current model range is larger and more diverse than ever. The range extends from saloons, coupés and SUVs through roadsters to the SLS AMG – the first vehicle to be developed from scratch by Mercedes-AMG.

With the AMG 2.0-litre turbo engine in the top model of the A-Class, the first four-cylinder vehicle from AMG is being launched this year. The E 63 AMG and the CLS 63 AMG are now also available as particularly powerful S-Models with the newly developed, performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive. The launch of these new model variants will offer Mercedes-AMG customers greater scope for individuality than ever before.

A 45 AMG

Mercedes-AMG is likewise the right address for those in search of something special. The AMG Performance Studio develops and produces individual AMG vehicles and one-off models in exclusive series. For motorsport enthusiasts, the AMG Driving Academy also organises unique driver training events in which participants are able to hone their skills at the wheel in Lapland/Sweden or on legendary race tracks, for example.

Formula 1, DTM and AMG customer sport

Firmly rooted in motorsport from the outset, the AMG performance brand has been at home on the race track for decades – from its standing as the most successful brand in the history of the DTM, through to its global commitment to customer sport at the highest level with the SLS AMG GT3. The AMG customer teams put in a strong team showing in the 2012 season, claiming 43 victories and nine titles.

When it comes to Formula 1, AMG has been an official partner for 18 years, and has been helping to ensure that safety is maintained on the racing circuits by providing the Official F1™ Safety Car and the Official F1™ Medical Car since 1996.  The MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS Formula 1 team has been competing since 2012. In the 2013 season, Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton will be vying for the world championship in their Silver Arrows.

New collaboration between Mercedes-AMG and Monster Cable Products

To tie in with the world premiere of the A 45 AMG, Mercedes-AMG will be announcing its collaboration with Monster Cable Products, a leading US manufacturer of high-end headphones. The “Monster DNA Headphones Inspired by AMG” are available in a look to match the new A 45 AMG.

Their design is tailored specifically to the high-powered four-cylinder compact car: similarly to the interior appointments of the A 45 AMG, the headphones feature high-quality surfaces in carbon-fibre look. The headphones are furthermore available in various A 45 AMG paint colours. AMG logos on the headband round off the common design features and add a defining exclusive touch.

The “Monster DNA Headphones Inspired by AMG” are truly ‘inspired’ on a technical level, too, with a special multi-driver technology enabling a totally new audio experience. The low weight and the particularly soft ear cushions ensure the necessary wearing comfort, even for extensive listening sessions.

The special multi-driver technology results in the authentic rendition of music in all frequency ranges – from deep, full bass to crystal-clear treble. The particularly comfortable Advanced Noise Isolation ear cushions block out interfering ambient noise for pure, unadulterated listening pleasure.

A 45 AMG

The dual port technology enables up to five additional headphones to be interconnected. Particularly robust materials are employed in the precision manufacturing process.

Driving Performance for the new generation

The A 45 AMG sees Mercedes-AMG embarking on a new era. For the first time in the company’s history extending back over more than 45 years, Mercedes-Benz’s performance brand is offering a fascinating high-performance vehicle in the compact class, representing a dynamic proposition for a new target group.

With a maximum output of 265 kW (360 hp) and up to 450 Newton metres of torque, the AMG 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine is the most powerful series production four-cylinder engine in the world.

The sensational power density of 133 kW (181 hp) outstrips even the most powerful super sports cars. At the same time, the engine also boasts supreme efficiency and complies with the EU6 emissions standard. The A 45 AMG also leads its segment in terms of fuel consumption, running on 6.9 litres per 100 kilometres in NEDC combined mode.

These credentials indicate that a further high-performing member of the BlueDIRECT family is now taking to the road. The performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive onboard the A 45 AMG sets new standards in the car’s segment.

The substance of the new Mercedes-Benz vehicle architecture for front- and all-wheel drive provides the perfect basis for the A 45 AMG and at least two other high-performance premium automobiles from Affalterbach. In designing and developing the A 45 AMG, the experts at AMG have drawn on the company’s decades of experience in motorsport and the production of powerful, high-performance vehicles.

Typically AMG: the most powerful series production four-cylinder engine in the world

In the A 45 AMG, Mercedes-AMG has developed a typical high-performance vehicle for the younger target groups. Two figures show that the A 45 AMG holds pole position in its displacement segment: the newly developed AMG 2.0‑litre turbo engine is the most powerful series production four-cylinder turbo engine in the world.

A maximum output of 265 kW (360 hp) and up to 450 Newton metres of torque are unmatched by any other mass-produced turbocharged four-cylinder engine worldwide. The power density of 133 kW (181 hp) is also absolutely unrivalled. In this discipline, the new AMG high-performance turbo engine even outstrips the most powerful super sports cars.

The high power and torque output and the combination with the performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive as standard lead to extremely dynamic performance: the A 45 AMG accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds, while its top speed stands at 250 km/h (electronically limited).

The specially developed AMG engine is also a model of efficiency – the A 45 AMG also leads its segment on this front, with fuel consumption of 6.9 litres per 100 kilometres in NEDC combined mode.

This is accompanied by particularly low exhaust emissions: the A 45 AMG already complies with the EU6 emissions standard which is not scheduled to enter into force until 2015, combined with the limit for the particle count per kilometre of 6 x 1011 which will be mandatory from 2017.

The basis for these impressive figures is provided by the high-tech package which has been put together by Mercedes-AMG. As a high-performance engine belonging to the BlueDIRECT family, the AMG 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine features spray-guided direct petrol injection via piezo injectors positioned centrally in the four combustion chambers.

The combination of multiple fuel injection and multiple spark ignition improves fuel utilisation and increases thermodynamic efficiency substantially, leading to lower exhaust emissions.

Other highlights include the gravity-die sandcast all-aluminium crankcase, weight-optimised crank assembly with forged steel crankshaft and forged pistons with friction-optimised piston rings, NANOSLIDE cylinder wall technology, air-water charge air cooling, generator management and ECO start/stop function.

Twin-scroll turbocharger and AMG sports exhaust systemwith exhaust flap

Mercedes-AMG addresses the essential challenges concerning the response of small-displacement turbo engines by means of a twin-scroll turbocharger, maximum derestriction of the exhaust system and an innovative injection strategy.

The twin-scroll technology provides for a more spontaneous build-up of charge pressure, making effective use of exhaust gas back pressure, exhaust gas temperature and exhaust gas impulse. This results in a swifter build-up of torque right from the lower rev range.

As a positive side-effect, the twin-scroll technology also benefits fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. At a maximum charge pressure of 1.8 bar, the AMG 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine also leads the field in this respect.

The AMG sports exhaust system features large pipe cross-sections and an automatically controlled exhaust flap. This technology, which is familiar from the SLK 55 AMG, reconciles the two apparently conflicting aims of tangible dynamism and hallmark Mercedes comfort on long journeys.

The flap is continuously adjusted by map control according to the power called up by the driver, load status and engine speed. The two striking tailpipes of the AMG sports exhaust system emit a fascinating, full engine sound which is particularly impressive during powerful acceleration.

An AMG Performance exhaust system with exhaust flap and featuring a dedicated tailpipe trim design is optionally available for the A 45 AMG. This provides for an even more emotional and striking engine sound when the throttle is open and during gear shifting.

The double-declutching function during downshifting and the interruption of ignition and injection during upshifting under full load produce a particularly throaty sound with the AMG Performance exhaust system and create a level of emotionality which is otherwise the reserve of engines with more than 4 cylinders.

High-performance cooling system with components from the SLS AMG

The high driving dynamics of the A 45 AMG call for a highly effective cooling system. On the basis of the components belonging to the SLS AMG, a low-temperature circuit is additionally deployed for air-water charge air cooling of the four-cylinder turbo engine. The large cooler section at the front level of the cooling module is supplemented by an additional cooler in the wheel arch.

Together with the charge air cooler which is connected in series, a high-performance electric pump ensures the required flow through the water coolers located behind the large intake ports. This provides for ideal cooling of the highly compressed charge air, thereby contributing towards optimum engine performance.

Cooling of the transmission oil is integrated in the water cooling circuit for the engine. The water cooler positioned behind the front apron is supported by the heat exchanger which is fitted directly on the transmission and supplied with cooling water as required by means of an auxiliary pump.

Engine production – a tradition of hand-built excellence

Similarly to all eight- and twelve-cylinder engines, the new AMG 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine is also hand-built according to the traditional AMG philosophy of “one man, one engine”. An exclusive assembly line has been set up for the new AMG engine at the Mercedes-Benz engine production plant in Kölleda – where all BlueDIRECT four-cylinder engines are built for the A- and B-Class models.

A characteristic feature of the “one man, one engine” production process is the AMG engine plate bearing the signature of the responsible engine fitter. Apart from serving as an AMG hallmark confirming superlative production quality, the AMG engine plate also attests to the peerless DNA of Mercedes-Benz’s high-performance brand.

AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission

Dual clutch transmission and all-wheel drive – the drive package onboard the new A 45 AMG is a demonstration of high-end engineering prowess. The AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission is directly flange-mounted on the transversely installed AMG 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine.

Key software modules have been adopted from the SLS AMG super sports car with its inspirational power transmission concept.

The dual clutch transmission of the A 45 AMG features seven gears, three driving programmes, a double-declutching function and RACE START for optimum acceleration. The strengths of the AMG DCT sports transmission include spontaneous gear shifting without any interruption in tractive power, a tailor-made control strategy, extremely smooth and easy gear shifting and a high level of efficiency.

Reinforced gear wheels provide for maximum stability. Synchroniser rings with carbon-fibre friction linings improve durability while also optimising the response time during manual gear-changing – the ideal basis for ambitious laps on cordoned-off race tracks.

“Momentary M mode” for even greater dynamism and driving enjoyment

Another special feature designed to enhance dynamic performance and driving enjoyment is so-called “Momentary M mode”. In C and S mode, this enables the driver to activate manual mode (“M”) without having to remove a hand from the steering wheel, by pressing the “up” or “down” shift paddle once.

In Momentary M mode the driver experiences the dynamism and performance of gear-shifting in manual mode in all of the automatic driving programmes, with automatic up- and down-shifting into the bargain. This allows the driver to devote his full attention to the vehicle’s impressive performance.

The shift times in manual mode “M” and in Sport mode “S” are similarly sporty in character to those of the SLS AMG GT super sports car.  Briefly and precisely interrupting ignition and injection under full load leads to even faster gearshifts with a more emotional sound than ever.

In “C” mode (Controlled Efficiency), tangibly soft transmission and engine characteristics support a fuel-efficient and comfort-oriented driving style. The ECO start/stop function is also active in “C” mode.

Performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive

The new A 45 AMG comes with variable, performance-oriented AMG  4MATIC all-wheel drive as standard. In developing this all-wheel drive, the focus firmly was on performance and dynamism.

The power flux to the rear powertrain is provided by a compact power take-off unit (PTU) which is fully integrated in the 7-speed sports transmission. It does not possess an oil circuit of its own. Instead, it is supplied with lubricant from the oil circuit of the sports transmission.

This configuration gives rise to substantial weight advantages in comparison to rival systems which branch off power by means of an add-on component with its own oil circuit. Together with the friction-minimised tapered roller bearings, the PTU achieves an excellent level of efficiency.
As an additional bonus, the system weight of the new AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive is up to 25 percent lighter than the all-wheel-drive versions offered by the competition.

A two-part propeller shaft transfers the power from the AMG 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine to the rear axle. In the interests of favourable weight distribution, an electrohydraulically controlled multi-disc clutch is integrated with the rear axle differential.

The multi-disc clutch immediately detects slip at the front axle. A hydraulic pump instantaneously presses the discs together and channels the engine torque to the rear wheels as necessary. All this takes place virtually without the driver noticing. To enable particularly fast response, the pump is always active and does not require to be started up each time it is needed, such as is customary with other systems.

Power distribution is fully variable: in normal driving, the A 45 AMG uses front-wheel drive in the interests of optimum efficiency. When the driving dynamics so require, the variable AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive splits the torque between front and rear axle up to a ratio of 50 : 50 percent.

The variables influencing the power distribution ratio are vehicle speed, lateral and longitudinal acceleration, steering angle, speed difference between the individual wheels, selected gear and accelerator position.

3-stage ESP® with ESP® Curve Dynamic Assist

An exclusive feature is the interaction of the AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive with the 3-stage ESP® and the ESP® Curve Dynamic Assist. The three ESP® stages enable the driver to vary the dynamics of the A 45 AMG according to his individual wishes at the push of a button. The safety-oriented “ESP ON” mode supports the driver in maintaining neutral handling characteristics. The system initiates braking intervention on one or more wheels and reduces the engine torque on detecting that the operating conditions are becoming unstable.

Briefly pressing the ESP® button activates “ESP SPORT Handling” mode. This dynamically oriented driving mode applies appropriate control strategies for later ESP® intervention and increased drive torque at the rear axle.

This means more fun at the wheel for drivers who are keen to exploit the vehicle’s dynamic potential. Pressing the ESP® button longer activates “ESP OFF”. In this mode, the ESP® functions are not available.

ESP OFF should only be used by experienced drivers on cordoned-off race tracks. When the driver steps on the brake pedal in the course of braking in “SPORT Handling” mode or “ESP OFF” mode, all the safety functions of the ESP® system are restored.

ESP® Curve Dynamic Assist complements the ESP® system to perfection: during dynamic cornering, imperceptible braking intervention on the inside wheel gives rise to a defined yaw moment around the vertical axis, resulting in precise cornering by the A 45 AMG and ensuring that the vehicle remains under control at all times.

Curve Dynamic Assist is adapted according to the selected ESP® mode. In “ESP SPORT Handling” mode and “ESP OFF” mode it supports the driver’s wish for increased agility and driving dynamics. ESP® Curve Dynamic Assist is an additional function of the Electronic Stability Program which noticeably improves not only agility, but also active driving safety in critical conditions.

AMG sports suspension with independent front and rear axle

Like every AMG high-performance automobile, the new A 45 AMG also incorporates sophisticated axle technology. For enhanced driving dynamics, the three-link front suspension is provided with stiffer steering knuckles and totally new elastokinematics.

Newly developed, more rigid bearings are employed in the lower link plane. These provide for more agile cornering properties and more precise and direct feedback from the road surface. The more rigid bearings also lead to higher camber stiffness, enabling higher cornering speeds. In developing the complete front axle, great importance has been attached to attaining the best possible traction in highly dynamic driving.

The four-link rear axle of the A 45 AMG is also a totally new development. In the course of optimising the elastokinematics, the strut bearings were duly adapted for maximum driving dynamics and control.

The rear axle carrier is provided with more rigid bearings for increased driving stability; the subframe is rigidly connected to the body. The AMG sports suspension with specifically tuned spring/damper units and larger stabilisers provides for high lateral acceleration and a reduced rolling tendency in fast double bends.

The A 45 AMG comes as standard with twin-spoke AMG light-alloy wheels, painted in titanium grey with a high-sheen finish, fitted with 235/40 R 18 tyres.

AMG speed-sensitive sports steering and AMG high-performance braking system

The electromechanical Dual Pinion AMG speed-sensitive sports steering with AMG-specific, speed-dependent power assistance and a constant steering ratio (14.5 : 1) enables high steering precision and agility. The electric motor is installed in space-saving configuration on the steering gear.

The AMG high-performance braking system with ventilated and perforated brake discs all round in size 350 x 32 millimetres at the front and 330 x 22 millimetres at the rear provides for spontaneous and reliable deceleration.

Exterior design with sporty and muscular highlights

Mercedes-AMG adds emphatically sporty and muscular highlights to the emotional exterior design of the new Mercedes-Benz A-Class sporting the new dynamic style, sculptural character and feature lines on the sides.

These refinements ensure that the A 45 AMG looks the part as a distinctive high-performance automobile – a genuine AMG through and through.

The front view of the A 45 AMG is characterised by the AMG “twin blade” radiator grille and the cross strut in the AMG front apron, both painted in matt titanium grey. Striking black flics surround the large cooling air intakes at the sides.

An interesting side view is guaranteed by the AMG light-alloy wheels in twin-spoke design and the side sill panels with inserts in matt titanium grey. The “TURBO AMG” lettering on the wing is exclusive to the top model of the A‑Class.

The AMG rear apron with its highlighted air outlet openings at the sides features a diffusor insert and trim in matt titanium grey. Two square, chrome-plated tailpipes of the AMG sports exhaust system with exhaust flap add an appropriately bold finishing touch.

Dynamic and exclusive interior design and appointments

Inside, too, the new A 45 AMG boasts a heady mix of hallmark Mercedes-AMG dynamism and exclusivity. The sports seats in ARTICO man-made leather/DINAMICA microfibre with red contrasting topstitching, the multifunction steering wheel with shift paddles and the AMG DRIVE UNIT set new standards in terms of both appearance and quality.

The dashboard trim comes in carbon-fibre look – a perfect match for the five air vents in black/red, the red seat belts and the AMG door sill panels. The AMG instrument cluster presents information by means of a central colour display with the AMG main menu and the RACETIMER.

Numerous individualisation options are available for the A 45 AMG (selection):

  • AMG carbon-fibre exterior mirror housing

Expressive and exclusive: the A 45 AMG “Edition 1”

The A 45 AMG “Edition 1” stands apart both on a technical level and in terms of appearance. As is familiar from the CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake, the fully appointed “Edition 1” model variant boasts an expressive composition of exclusive exterior and interior details.

The A 45 AMG “Edition 1” focuses on the car’s affinity to motorsport: the exterior paint finish in cirrus white corresponds with the AMG sports stripes in matt graphite grey on the bonnet, roof and sides.

The red highlights on the radiator grille, exterior mirrors and rear aerofoil leave a lasting impression. These highlights combine to perfection with the red painted brake callipers and the AMG multispoke light-alloy wheels painted in matt black with special AMG hub caps in central-locking look.

The 8 x 19 light-alloy wheels are fitted all-round with tyres in size 235/35 R 19. Both the AMG Night package and the Aerodynamics package feature as standard for the “Edition 1”, providing the perfect finishing touch to the model’s motorsport-inspired character.

Black and red dominate the interior of the A 45 AMG “Edition 1”, too. Red contrasting stitching embellishes the AMG Performance seats in ARTICO man-made leather/DINAMICA microfibre, the top section of the dashboard in ARTICO man-made leather and the AMG Performance steering wheel in nappa leather/DINAMICA microfibre. Other visual highlights are the E-SELECT lever with embossed AMG emblem and the “Edition 1” badge on the AMG DRIVE UNIT.

The new E 63 AMG – with 4MATIC and as S-Model

Mercedes-AMG continues to champion performance, dynamism and efficiency: the new E 63 AMG is now also available as a particularly exclusive and powerful S-Model with an output of 430 kW (585 hp), 800 Newton metres of torque and featuring a newly developed performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system.

The AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine continues to be the absolute pinnacle of efficiency: the combination of high performance and low fuel consumption remains unrivalled by any other competitor in the segment worldwide.

The permanent all-wheel drive is also optionally available for the other E 63 AMG models – in which the V8 engine has been uprated from 386 kW (525 hp) and 700 Nm to 410 kW (557 hp) and 720 Nm of torque.

With this range, Mercedes-AMG is premiering high-performance passenger car models with an all-wheel-drive system geared to driving dynamics.

The launch of the new, customised model variants will offer Mercedes-AMG customers greater scope for individuality than ever before. The new high-performance, exclusive S-Models are an even more attractive proposition than the AMG Performance packages which have enjoyed great popularity to date.

The S-Models form an integral part of the new AMG model range constellation as distinctive model variants; additional AMG high-performance automobiles will become available as S-Models in future.

The E 63 AMG’s appeal is also boosted by substantially enhanced value for money: customers now receive more performance and driving dynamics and a broader scope of standard equipment and appointments.

Mercedes-Benz E 63 AMG (W212) Facelift 2013

The new E 63 AMG also presents a more dynamic appearance than its predecessor. The new AMG design philosophy is immediately apparent at first glance, with the “twin blade” radiator grille and the “A-wing” in the AMG front apron defining the exclusive look. As previously, the top AMG model is available as a Saloon and an Estate variant.

Alongside the successful SUVs – ML 63 AMG, GL 63 AMG, G 63 AMG and G 65 AMG – two passenger car model ranges comprising up to eight unique models with performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive are now available from Mercedes-AMG in the guise of the E 63 AMG and the CLS 63 AMG. Acceleration to 100 km/h from a standing start in 3.6 seconds provides the E 63 AMG S 4MATIC with a comfortable lead over the entire competition; the top speed stands at 250 km/h (electronically limited). In addition to the increase in output, this is also attributable in no small part to the performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive with a power distribution ratio of 33 to 67 percent (front/rear axle). Perfect traction during acceleration effectively avoids slip-induced losses.

On the new S-Model the AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine generates a maximum output of 430 kW (585 hp) and maximum torque of 800 Newton metres – representing an increase of 20 kW (28 hp) over the AMG Performance package which was previously available as an option. This enhanced performance and power results from adaptation of the engine application, an increase in peak pressure and a rise in the charge pressure from 0.9 to 1.0 bar. At 410 kW (557 hp) and 720 Newton metres, the basic model also boasts an increase of 24 kW (32 hp) and 20 Newton metres over its predecessor.

Despite added power and enhanced performance, all models of the E 63 AMG offer high efficiency, low fuel consumption and low exhaust emissions. The AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine remains the most efficient series production V8 engine around – with substantially more cubic capacity than its direct competitors.

The E 63 AMG rated at 410 kW (557 hp) with rear-wheel drive runs on 9.8 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres in accordance with NEDC (230 grams of CO2). The variant with performance-oriented 4MATIC all-wheel drive and the S-Model rated at 430 kW (585 hp) with all-wheel drive display only marginally higher fuel consumption, at 10.3 to 10.5 litres per 100 km (242 grams to 246 grams of CO2).

On top of this, following the implementation of internal engine measures all E 63 AMGs meet the requirements of the stringent Euro 6 emissions standard which will not enter into force until 2015.

AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission for personal set-up

Maximum individuality and customised dynamics – these are the special strengths of the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission. The four modes – “C” (Controlled Efficiency), “S” (Sport), “S+” (Sport plus) and “M” (Manual) – offer the driver a personal set-up.

In “C” mode, the ECO start/stop function is active and switches off the eight-cylinder engine when the vehicle is at a standstill. In addition, the transmission characteristics are tangibly soft, with smooth and early gear changes. Second gear is generally used as the starting gear in this mode.

The engine and transmission are far more agile in “S”, “S+” and “M” mode; in addition, the ECO start/stop function is deactivated. Partial suppression of the cylinders proves perfect for an emphatic driving style: briefly and precisely interrupting ignition and injection under full load leads to even faster gearshifts with a more emotional sound than before.  An automatic double-declutching function for downshifting and the RACE START function are also included as standard with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission.

Performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive for the ultimate in dynamism

The performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive distributes the engine torque at a ratio of 33 to 67 percent (front/rear axle). The rear-biased power distribution provides for signature AMG high driving dynamics and superlative driving enjoyment.

The 3-stage ESP® has been tailored specifically to the permanent all-wheel drive system. In “SPORT Handling” mode, ESP® Curve Dynamic Assist performs selective braking intervention on individual wheels in the interests of high agility, thereby avoiding understeering when turning and cornering. In bends, specific brief braking of the inner rear wheel results in defined cornering of the vehicle.

The AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive enhances driving safety and grip on wet or wintry road surfaces. Optimum traction is guaranteed by a multi-disk clutch with a locking effect of 50 Newton metres which exploits the frictional connection potential of all four wheels to the full on snow and ice in particular.

The technical basis is provided by a transfer case for the additional power take-off to the driven front axle. This transfer case is integrated compactly into the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission and requires virtually no additional installation space.

Mercedes-Benz E 63 AMG (W 212) Facelift 2013

The torque is transmitted from the power take-off via a propeller shaft to the front axle. Power transmission from the front-axle differential to the front-left drive shaft is effected via an intermediate shaft which passes through an encapsulated shaft duct in the engine oil pan. The compact and weight-optimised design results in a comparatively low level of additional weight for the all-wheel drive system of only 70 kilograms.

E 63 AMG S-Model with differential lock on the rear axle

The E 63 AMG S sees Mercedes-AMG going one step further. True to AMG’s “Driving Performance” brand claim, the most powerful E-Class is additionally fitted with a differential lock on the rear axle. This high-tech package results in a further increase in traction, ultimately leading to even greater driving dynamics and enhanced driving enjoyment, especially on the race track.

All E 63 AMG models feature the AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension with electronically controlled damping system. The front axle employs a steel-spring suspension system, while the rear axle is fitted with a fully load-bearing air suspension system. Pressing the button marked with a shock absorber on the AMG DRIVE UNIT is sufficient to switch the electronics from “Comfort” to “Sport” or “Sport plus”.

The three-link front suspension has undergone further optimisation for the S-Model and the E 63 AMG with all-wheel drive. In conjunction with the newly developed axle components produced in aluminium, these optimisation measures result in markedly enhanced grip and agility combined with a high level of neutrality during fast cornering.

The markedly more performance-oriented elastokinematics are exclusive to the S-Model, and offer the driver maximum neutrality and even better feedback and grip at the critical limits. With rear-wheel or all-wheel drive, the E 63 AMG’s 48 millimetre wider track at the front offers substantially greater stability at high cornering speeds and improved road feel. Increased negative camber on both axles additionally boosts lateral dynamics.

Electromechanical AMG speed-sensitive steering complements the vehicle’s set-up to perfection, the direct steering ratio of 14 : 1 providing for extremely agile handling in bends in conjunction with the variable servo assistance geared to the given suspension mode.

The E 63 AMG is fitted as standard with 10-spoke AMG light-alloy wheels painted in titanium grey and featuring a high-sheen finish. Tyres in size 255/40 R 18 are fitted to 9.0 x 18 wheels at the front, while the 9.5 x 18 rear wheels have 285/35 R 18 tyres. The all-wheel drive and S-Model come with tyres in size 255/35 R 19 (front) and 285/30 R 19 (rear) on AMG light-alloy wheels in size 9.0 x 19 and 9.5 x 19.

Only the high-performance S-Model features 10-spoke light-alloy wheels painted in matt titanium grey with a high-sheen rim flange.

Optional AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system

The E 63 AMG is equipped with an extremely effective AMG high-performance braking system befitting its status as an AMG automobile. The front and rear axles sport ventilated and perforated brake disks in ample 360 millimetre format.

The disks which are subject to particularly high levels of stress and strain on the front axle feature the composite braking technology which has been tried and tested in the field of motor sport. Callipers in a silver painted finish with white AMG lettering and incorporating six pistons (front) and four pistons (rear) provide for spontaneous, fading-resistant deceleration and the shortest stopping distances. Callipers in a red painted finish distinguish the S-Model.

An AMG ceramic high-performance composite braking system is exclusively available for the S-Model as an optional feature – recognisable by the even larger 402 millimetre brake disks and the “AMG Carbon Ceramic” logo on callipers sporting a special paint finish. This ceramic system is around 40 percent lighter, providing for reduced unsprung masses and enhanced driving dynamics, agility and ride comfort. The superior hardness of the ceramic brake disks leads to a longer service life and greater resistance to extreme stress and heat.

“Intelligent drive” with new assistance systems

What started with the PRE-SAFE® system and continued with DISTRONIC PLUS has resulted in a new dimension of motoring at Mercedes-Benz: comfort and safety are merged into one. Mercedes-Benz refers to this as “intelligent drive”. In the E-Class, a whole host of new or optimised systems from the future S-Class celebrate their world premiere, making motoring more comfortable and safer.

The basis for all this is formed by new, state-of-the-art sensors and corresponding algorithms. Mercedes-Benz has made a major step forward with the introduction of the Stereo Multi-Purpose Camera.

Just like the Mono Multi-Purpose Camera fitted previously, it is positioned behind the windscreen in the vicinity of the rear-view mirror. However, this camera features two “eyes” set at an angle of 45 degrees and with an overall range of 500 metres that produce a three-dimensional view of the area up to around 50 metres in front of the vehicle. In this way, the stereo camera provides data for processing by various systems.

Intelligent algorithms perform an evaluation of this three-dimensional visual information in order to detect and carry out a classification, both spatially and in terms of their movement, of vehicles that are driving ahead, oncoming or crossing, as well as pedestrians and a variety of traffic signs within a large field of vision.

At the same time as the Stereo Multi-Purpose Camera, Mercedes-Benz is also introducing improved versions of the multistage radar sensor system. As standard, both the Saloon and Estate models are fitted with COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST, a radar-based collision warning system with brake assist systems.

It helps to significantly reduce the risk of a rear-end collision. Also forming part of the standard equipment is ATTENTION ASSIST, which is now able to warn of inattentiveness and drowsiness across a wider speed range, and also inform the driver about their level of fatigue and the amount of driving time which has elapsed since the last break. It also offers an adjustable sensitivity level.

In addition, also optionally available are a number of assistance systems which are either new or now feature significantly extended functions.

The following is an overview of the innovations:

  • DISTRONIC PLUS with Steering Assist can help to take the burden off the driver when it comes to keeping the vehicle in its lane and also track traffic in tailbacks semi-automatically
  • for the first time, the Brake Assist system BAS PLUS with Junction Assist is able to detect crossing traffic and pedestrians too, and boost the braking power applied by the driver accordingly
  • the PRE-SAFE® Brake can detect pedestrians and initiate autonomous braking to avoid a collision at speeds up to 50 km/h
  • PRE-SAFE® PLUS can recognise an imminent rear-end collision. The driver of the vehicle following behind is warned by activation of the rear warning lights with increasing frequency (not in the USA and Canada). The PRE-SAFE® system then triggers occupant protection measures to reduce the forces to which occupants are subjected. It can also firmly apply the stationary vehicle’s brakes in the event of a rear-end collision to prevent secondary accidents
  • Active Lane Keeping Assist can now detect when the adjacent lane is occupied, in particular by oncoming traffic too. When there is the risk of a collision, the system can also prevent the vehicle from leaving its lane unintentionally, when continuous lines are present, by applying the brakes on one side. As such it makes the ideal supplement to Active Blind Spot Assist
  • Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus allows the high-beam headlamps to be kept on permanently without dazzling traffic by masking out other vehicles in the beams’ cone of light
  • Active Parking Assist enables automated parking with active steering and brake control in both parallel and end-on spaces
  • in addition to speed limits, Traffic Sign Assist can now also detect and display no-overtaking zones and the respective signs signalling their end. In the case of signs imposing access restrictions, it can also provide visual and acoustic warnings. For this reason, it is the first system which can prevent drivers from unintentionally becoming a “phantom driver” i.e. driving the wrong way along a motorway.
  • The 360o camera covers all four sides of the vehicle, thus enabling a uniform all-round view, including virtual bird’s-eye view – a top-down view of the vehicle and its immediate surroundings. Dynamic guide lines help with entering and leaving parking spaces as well as manoeuvring

Distinctive design creating an even more dynamic and exclusive aura

The dynamism and performance stemming from the fascinating technology of the new E 63 AMG are also transported by the design as defining attributes of the vehicle.  The AMG high-performance automobile sets new design trends in the process.

The E 63 AMG presents the new AMG design philosophy. Predominant elements are the AMG “twin blade” radiator grille in silver chrome and the so-called “A-wing”. The new, three-dimensional air deflector spans the entire width of the AMG front apron, presenting the stylised “A” which is a hallmark of AMG vehicles.

The “A-wing” painted in the car’s exterior colour with a trim strip in silver chrome provides the backdrop for three large cooling air intake openings. On the side air intakes, black flics provide for an ideal inflow of air into the cooling modules, while at the bottom a front splitter painted in the car’s exterior colour helps to reduce lift. Convex and concave surfaces dynamically combine the new front end of the E 63 AMG featuring a sculptural design with the distinctive flared wings on which “V8 BITURBO” lettering alludes to the superior engine power on board.

The striking air outlet openings at the sides, the black grille and the two sets of twin chrome tailpipes belonging to the AMG sports exhaust system lend the rear an impression of width. The black diffusor insert with pronounced fins provides the E 63 AMG with a powerful touch of race track atmosphere at the rear.

S-Model with even more striking design features

Numerous newly designed, even more striking design features set the E 63 AMG S 4MATIC apart from the basic model. The “A-wing” at the front cuts a fine figure in high-gloss black, for example. The front splitter is finished in silver chrome, as are the striking three-dimensional inserts in the side sill panels.

The rear end presents a powerful impression by virtue of the trim strip in silver chrome in conjunction with the two sets of distinctive twin chrome tailpipes belonging to the AMG sports exhaust system. The AMG spoiler lip (on the Saloon only) painted in the car’s exterior colour reduces lift at high speeds.

The 10-spoke AMG light-alloy wheels in a matt titanium grey painted finish with high-sheen rim flange fit snugly in the wheel arches with tyres in size 255/35 R 19 at the front and 285/30 R 19 at the rear. Brake callipers in red painted finish and an AMG logo on the boot lid sporting an “S” in contrasting black are other characteristic features of the S-Models.

Dynamic, exclusive atmosphere inside

With the standard-fit nappa leather upholstery, the black interior of the E 63 AMG S-Model features grey contrasting topstitching on the AMG sports seats, the door centre panels, the door armrests and the centre console. Silver seat belts are also part of this standard interior.

The rim of the AMG Performance steering wheel in black nappa leather is flattened at the top and bottom and boasts grip areas in Alcantara® and grey contrasting stitching. The front head restraints of the AMG sports seats incorporate exclusive embossed AMG emblems.

The AMG instrument cluster in a new design features an “S AMG” logo on the 320 km/h speedometer and red applications. The standard scope of equipment and appointments further includes AMG door sill panels with white LED illumination, an electrically operated rear roller blind (Saloon only) and the anti-theft protection package.

Superior-quality materials, excellent workmanship and an exclusive atmosphere are common to all E 63 AMG models. The new AMG-specific analogue clock in IWC design is an attractive eye-catcher between the two central air vents.

Acceleration from a standing start to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds clearly places the CLS 63 AMG S-Model in pole position in the competitive line-up. In addition to the increase in output, this special edge for the S-Model is also attributable in no small part to the performance-oriented all-wheel drive with a power distribution ratio of 33 to 67 percent (front/rear axle). Perfect traction during acceleration effectively avoids slip-induced losses. The top speed stands at 250 km/h (electronically limited).

On the new S-Model the AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine generates a maximum output of 430 kW (585 hp) and maximum torque of 800 Nm – representing an increase of 20 kW (28 hp) over the AMG Performance package which was previously available as an option for the Coupé.

This enhanced performance and power results from adaptation of the engine application, an increase in peak pressure and a rise in the charge pressure from 0.9 to 1.0 bar. At 410 kW (557 hp) and 720 Nm, the basic model also boasts an increase of 24 kW (32 hp) and 20 Nm over its predecessor.

Despite added power and enhanced performance, all models offer high efficiency, low fuel consumption and low exhaust emissions. The AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine remains the most efficient series production V8 engine around – with substantially more cubic capacity than its direct competitors. The CLS 63 AMG rated at 410 kW (557 hp) with rear-wheel drive runs on 9.9 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres in accordance with NEDC (231 grams of CO2).

The variant with an output of 410 kW and performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive and the S-Model rated at 430 kW (585 hp) with all-wheel drive display only marginally higher fuel consumption, at 10.4 to 10.6 litres per 100 km (243 grams to 248 grams of CO2).

As an additional boon, following the implementation of internal engine measures all CLS 63 AMGs meet the requirements of the stringent Euro 6 emissions standard which will not enter into force until 2015.

AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission for personal set-up

Maximum individuality and customised dynamics – these are the special strengths of the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission. The four modes – “C” (Controlled Efficiency), “S” (Sport), “S+” (Sport plus) and “M” (Manual) – offer the driver a personal set-up. In “C” mode, the ECO start/stop function is active and switches off the eight-cylinder engine when the vehicle is at a standstill. In addition, the transmission characteristics are tangibly soft, with smooth and early gear changes. Second gear is generally used as the starting gear in this mode.

The engine and transmission are far more agile in “S”, “S+” and “M” mode; in addition, the ECO start/stop function is deactivated. Partial suppression of the cylinders proves perfect for an emphatic driving style: briefly and precisely interrupting ignition and injection under full load leads to even faster gearshifts with a more emotional sound than before. An automatic double-declutching function for downshifting and the RACE START function are also included as standard with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission.

Performance-oriented all-wheel drive for the ultimate in dynamism

The performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive distributes the engine torque at a ratio of 33 to 67 percent (front/rear axle). The rear-biased power distribution provides for signature AMG high driving dynamics and superlative driving enjoyment. The 3-stage ESP® has been tailored specifically to the permanent all-wheel drive system. In “SPORT Handling” mode, the Torque Vectoring Brake performs selective braking intervention on individual wheels in the interests of high agility, thereby avoiding understeering when turning and cornering. In bends, specific brief braking of the inner rear wheel results in defined cornering of the vehicle.

The AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive enhances driving safety and grip on wet or wintry road surfaces. Optimum traction is guaranteed by a multi-disk clutch with a locking effect of 50 Nm which exploits the frictional connection potential of all four wheels to the full on snow and ice in particular.

The technical basis for the all-wheel drive system is provided by a transfer case for the additional power take-off to the driven rear axle. This transfer case is integrated compactly into the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission and requires virtually no additional installation space.

The torque is transmitted from the power take-off via a propeller shaft to the front axle. Power transmission to the front-left drive shaft is effected via an intermediate shaft which passes through an encapsulated shaft duct in the engine oil pan. The compact and weight-optimised design results in a comparatively low level of additional weight for the all-wheel-drive system
of only 70 kilograms.

The CLS 63 AMG S-Model sees Mercedes-AMG going one step further. True
to the “Driving Performance” philosophy, a differential lock is fitted on the rear axle. This high-tech package results in a further increase in traction, ultimately leading to even greater driving dynamics and enhanced driving enjoyment, especially on the race track.

All CLS 63 AMG models feature the AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension with electronically controlled damping system. The front axle employs a steel-spring suspension system, while the rear axle is fitted with a fully load-bearing air suspension system.

Pressing the button marked with a shock absorber in the AMG DRIVE UNIT is sufficient to switch the electronics from “Comfort” to “Sport” or “Sport plus”. The three-link front suspension has undergone further optimisation for the S-Model and the CLS 63 AMG with all-wheel drive. In conjunction with the newly developed axle components produced in aluminium, these optimisation measures result in markedly enhanced grip and agility combined with a high level of neutrality during fast cornering.

The markedly more performance-oriented elastokinematics are exclusive to the S-Model, and offer the driver maximum neutrality and even better feedback and grip at the critical limits. With rear-wheel or all-wheel drive, the CLS 63 AMG’s 24 millimetre wider track at the front offers substantially greater stability at high cornering speeds and improved road feel. Increased negative camber on both axles additionally boosts lateral dynamics.

Electromechanical AMG speed-sensitive steering complements the vehicle’s set-up to perfection, the direct steering ratio of 14 : 1 providing for extremely agile handling in bends in conjunction with the variable servo assistance geared to the given suspension mode. The CLS 63 AMG is fitted as standard with triple-spoke AMG light-alloy wheels painted in titanium grey and featuring a high-sheen finish.

Tyres in size 255/35 R 19 are fitted to 9.0 x 19 wheels at the front, while the 10 x 19 rear wheels have 285/30 R 19 tyres. Only the high-performance S-Model features exclusive 10-spoke light-alloy wheels painted in matt titanium grey with a high-sheen rim flange.

Optional AMG ceramic high-performance compound brake system

The CLS 63 AMG is equipped with an AMG high-performance braking system befitting its status as an AMG automobile. The front and rear axles sport ventilated and perforated brake disks in ample 360 millimetre format.

The disks which are subject to particularly high levels of stress and strain on the front axle feature the composite braking technology which has been tried and tested in the field of motor sport. Callipers in a silver painted finish with white AMG lettering and incorporating six pistons (front) and four pistons (rear) provide for spontaneous, fading-resistant deceleration and the shortest stopping distances.

An AMG ceramic high-performance composite braking system is exclusively available for the S-Model as an optional feature – recognisable by the even larger 402 millimetre brake disks and the “AMG Carbon Ceramic” logo on callipers sporting a special paint finish. This ceramic system is around 40 percent lighter, providing for reduced unsprung masses and enhanced driving dynamics, agility and ride comfort. The superior hardness of the ceramic brake disks leads to a longer service life and greater resistance to extreme stress and heat.

S-Model with subtly different design features

In terms of exterior design, the CLS 63 AMG S-Model is differentiated from the other models by brake callipers in a red painted finish and the AMG logo on the trunk lid sporting an “S” in contrasting black. When the customer so desires, the interior of the S-Model features grey contrasting stitching on the AMG sports seats, the door centre panels, the door armrests and the centre console. Silver seat belts are also on board in conjunction with a black interior.

The rim of the AMG Performance steering wheel in black nappa leather is flattened at the top and bottom and boasts grip areas in Alcantara® and grey contrasting stitching. The front head restraints of the AMG sports seats incorporate exclusive embossed AMG emblems. The AMG instrument cluster in a new design features an “S AMG” logo on the 320 km/h speedometer and red applications. AMG door sill panels illuminated in white round off the exclusive range of equipment and appointments.

Bang & Olufsen BeoSound AMG high-end surround sound system

A very special highlight among the optional equipment and appointments for all CLS variants is the Bang & Olufsen BeoSound AMG high-end surround sound system, developed by Mercedes-Benz and Mercedes‑AMG together with renowned Danish audio specialist Bang & Olufsen. The sound system also offers playback in Dolby Digital 5.1 quality and enables an exclusive audio experience of the very highest standard.

This performance is made possible by a 1200 W amplifier and 14 high-end loudspeakers with neodymium driver in conjunction with precision distribution of the audio signals by the sound processor.

This integrated digital sound processor (DSP) enables the driver to select a special B&O sound menu via COMAND. Front, central or rear sound setups can be selected in True Image™ mode, resulting in an authentic audio experience in the selected listening position. Various sound modes are additionally stored in the “Sound Mode” menu, enabling selection between a “Reference” high-end studio sound and a surround option.

While “Reference” focuses on an authentic, unadulterated rendering of the artist’s performance, the special surround sound mode is particularly ideal for live or concert music, creating a unique panoramic sound in the vehicle without compromising the natural character
of the recording.

The illuminated 50 W tweeters featuring Acoustic Lens Technology in the mirror triangles add special highlights. High-quality loudspeaker covers in “silver chrome” bearing the Bang & Olufsen logo additionally allude to the exclusive character of the high-end surround sound system.

A further highlight for all models of the CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake is the designo wooden luggage compartment floor. This luggage compartment floor is made of open-pore American cherry wood, a decorative fine wood traditionally used in superior interior design work, high-quality furniture and exclusive ship outfitting applications.

Selected veneer sheets are glued and pressed together by hand in cross-bonded layers to achieve high dimensional stability. The blanks are milled into their precise shape using a CNC machine, and the surfaces are sanded to a smooth finish, waterproofed and oiled to highlight the natural beauty of the wood.

Dark fumed oak inlays, precision-cut in narrow three-millimetre strips using laser technology, lend a definitive finishing touch to the design of the luggage compartment floor. In combination with rubber strips, the extruded aluminium rails with brushed surfaces not only protect the wood surface but also have an anti-slip effect.

The market launch of the CLS 63 AMG with rear-wheel drive will begin in April 2013, with the all-wheel-drive CLS 63 AMG and the CLS 63 AMG S-Model following in June.

Mercedes-AMG presents the high-end super sports car version of its gull-wing model, the new SLS AMG Coupé Black Series. Inspired by the SLS AMG GT3 racing version, the fifth Black Series model from Mercedes-AMG boasts an intoxicating mix of breathtaking design, outstanding driving dynamics and uncompromising lightweight construction in accordance with the “AMG Lightweight Performance” strategy.

With a DIN kerb weight of 1550 kilograms, the SLS AMG Black Series achieves a power-to-weight ratio of 2.45 kg/hp. The AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine generates a power output of 464 kW (631 hp) at 7400 rpm and propels the most dynamic road-going gull-wing model ever to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds.

A new AMG titanium sports exhaust system produces an emotion-stirring soundtrack to accompany the scintillating performance. Its stirring performance and supreme driving dynamics are underpinned by the numerous new developments that have been incorporated into the engine, power transmission, suspension and aerodynamics, but also by us giving top priority to our “AMG Lightweight Performance” strategy.

Great efforts in the area of lightweight design have resulted in a DIN kerb weight of 1550 kilograms”, notes Tobias Moers, Head of Overall Vehicle Development and member of the Management Board of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

The AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine: a byword for thrilling driving dynamics

The uprated AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine generating an output of 464 kW (631 hp) and 635 Newton metres of torque is a byword for thrilling driving dynamics, and makes the SLS AMG Coupé Black Series the most powerful high-performance car from AMG with a combustion engine at present. Only the SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive with a maximum output of 552 kW comes with greater power reserves.

The SLS AMG Coupé Black Series accelerates to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds, and goes on to attain a top speed of 315 km/h. The additional 44 kW (60 hp) of power in comparison to the 420 kW (571 hp) offered by the SLS AMG has been achieved by the following measures:

  • Increase in the maximum engine speed from 7200 to 8000 rpm
  • Redesigned valve gear for high-revving engine with modified camshafts, adapted cam geometry as well as optimised bucket tappets featuring a special coating normally only used in motor racing
  • Revised intake air ducting: dethrottling and adaptation to the new maximum engine speed
  • Completely reconfigured belt drive system that is resistant to high rev speeds, including all ancillaries and guide pulleys
  • Adjustment of the engine application and increase in peak pressure

The engineers at Mercedes-AMG have further optimised the crank assembly in the interests of optimum stability in tough racing use. The measures carried out here include modified oil bores in the crankshaft, new crankshaft bearings and high-strength screwed connections for the conrods.

The entire water and oil cooling system for the engine and transmission has also undergone further optimisation. The AMG V8 engine in the SLS AMG Coupé Black Series is additionally provided with a special support system.

A gas-filled strut braces the eight-cylinder engine against the body, effectively eliminating undesired load-change reactions during highly dynamic driving on the racetrack. The AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine is hand-built at the AMG engine workshop in Affalterbach according to the “one man, one engine” philosophy.

This is verified by the black AMG engine badge bearing the responsible engine fitter’s signature that is a hallmark of the Black Series models.

Brand new and exceptionally light AMG titanium sports exhaust system

Placed in a front-mid position behind the front axle, the naturally aspirated eight-cylinder power unit delights with its racing car-like responsiveness and by building up high revs more eagerly than ever.

The mighty AMG V8 engine’s racetrack pedigree is clearly reflected in its acoustic performance, too: the fully redesigned AMG sports exhaust system, built from weight-saving titanium for the first time, produces a sensational soundtrack, with the free-revving naturally aspirated V8 unit hitting the high notes to even more striking effect than ever.

From 5500 rpm up to when the rev limiter cuts in at 8000 rpm especially, the high-revving concept makes its presence heard even more distinctly, allowing it to be experienced more intensely. The higher frequency tone when accelerating at full throttle is reminiscent of the sound made by racing car engines.

The SLS AMG Coupé Black Series meets all of the specific AMG requirements while still offering its occupants the comfort on long journeys that Mercedes is renowned for: when driving at a constant speed, the AMG V8 unit produces a more restrained sound.

The AMG sound specialists were able to achieve the challenging acoustic targets by conducting elaborate simulations and in-vehicle testing. The AMG titanium sports exhaust system employs pipes with a diameter of 70 millimetres together with specially designed centre and rear reflection silencers.

The system’s unique acoustic qualities are down in no small part to the special titanium alloy with its high thermal resistance. The switch from steel to titanium has furthermore spawned a substantial weight saving: at just under 17 kilograms, the new AMG sports exhaust system is around 13 kilograms lighter than its predecessor.

It continues to be fitted with the performance-enhancing exhaust headers used in the past. The presence of the AMG titanium sports exhaust system is given away by the two sets of chrome twin tailpipes with a square cross-section, which have been perfectly integrated into the rear apron with its black diffuser insert.

Systematic application of the AMG Lightweight Performance strategy

Lightweight through and through: with a kerb weight of 1550 kilograms (DIN), the new SLS AMG Coupé Black Series is not only 70 kilograms lighter than the SLS AMG, but also attains the best power-to-weight ratio of all AMG Black Series models to date by far.

The figure of 2.45 kg/hp is impressive even by super sports car standards. Such a low ratio is made possible by systematic application of the “AMG Lightweight Performance” strategy.

Numerous body elements, such as the bonnet, the rear panel behind the AMG sports bucket seats, the diagonal braces on the underbody and the torque tube between engine and transmission, are made entirely of the motorsport material carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic, or CRP for short. In contrast to its 26.6-kilogram counterpart with sand-cast aluminium housing, the carbon-fibre torque tube weighs just 13.3 kilograms.

As previously, power transmission between the engine and the dual clutch transmission, which is flange-mounted on the rear axle (transaxle principle), is effected by means of a CRP drive shaft weighing only 4.7 kilograms. A number of parts on the aluminium spaceframe have also been replaced by CRP components. A lithium-ion battery which is used in place of the conventional starter battery saves a further eight kilograms.

Optimised dual clutch transmission for even more emotion-stirring dynamism

The overall power transmission system is also a major contributory factor to the outstanding driving dynamics of the SLS AMG Coupé Black Series. The AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission is installed ten millimetres lower in order to achieve a lower centre of gravity for the vehicle and is braced against the body by means of gas-filled struts to eliminate load-change effects.

The dual clutch transmission features four driving modes (C, S, S+ and M): “Sport plus” and “Manual” in particular provide for even sportier performance than with the SLS AMG and SLS AMG GT models. In addition to shortened shift times, the reduced response time to shift commands from the driver and the precisely defined shift firmness translate into pure dynamism and an emotion-charged driving experience.

An even more thrilling feature is the automatic double-declutching function during downshifting: the throttle blips when shifting gear are more pronounced and, thanks to the AMG titanium sports exhaust system, more distinctly audible than ever. The SLS AMG Coupé Black Series once again sets new standards here.

There is also a new “temporary M mode”. In C, S or S+ mode, this enables the driver to activate manual mode without having to remove a hand from the steering wheel by simply flicking the “up” or “down” shift paddle once. In temporary M mode, the driver can experience all the dynamism and performance of gearshifts in the modified manual programme in any of the automatic drive modes, with the added benefit of automatic up- and downshifting.

This allows the driver to devote his full attention to savouring the vehicle’s stunning performance. The temporary M mode offers the best of both worlds: regardless of the currently activated drive mode, drivers can enjoy combining automated gearshifts and manual shift commands with the paddles as they please. The system deactivates the temporary M mode and reverts to the drive mode last activated (C, S or S+) fully automatically as a function of the current driving situation.

New, electronic AMG rear-axle differential lock

A newly developed, electronically controlled AMG rear-axle differential lock with a shorter final-drive ratio replaces the mechanical variant; it is integrated in the compact transmission housing.

This system operates with a variable locking effect in acceleration and overrun mode; in addition, the electronics respond more sensitively than previously, enabling excellent traction for the driven wheels at all friction levels. The electronic AMG rear-axle differential lock also benefits driving safety: when weaving in and out or changing lane at high speeds, the system has a stabilising effect, as it is able to attenuate the vehicle’s yaw rate around its vertical axis.

The standard-fit 3-stage ESP® system featuring the functions “ON”, “SPORT Handling Mode” and “OFF” is precision-tuned to the electronic AMG rear-axle differential lock. The same applies to the RACE START function, which provides for perfect traction when accelerating from a standing start in conjunction with the electronic differential lock, or “E-Diff” as it is known in technical jargon.

AMG RIDE CONTROL performance suspension and sports tyres

The chassis and suspension of the SLS AMG Coupé Black Series have also been re-engineered. The basic layout with aluminium double wishbones all-round remains unchanged, but barely a component has gone untouched in the interests of greatly enhanced racetrack performance.

The new developments in detail:

  • AMG RIDE CONTROL performance suspension with tauter tuning and electronically controlled two-stage damping (Sport, Sport +) for individual adjustment to the preferred personal driving style
  • Spring retainers with threaded section to allow for adjustment of wheel loads, thereby enabling personalised racetrack setup
  • Elastokinematics around 50% / 42% stiffer (front/rear axle) for greater roll stability in fast S bends
  • Track width increased by 20 / 24 millimetres (front/rear axle) for more grip when cornering at speed
  • New hub carriers on front axle and new front stabiliser tuning for added grip and reduced roll angle when cornering at speed
  • AMG 5-twin-spoke light-alloy wheels featuring extra-lightweight forged design with optimised strength, painted in matt black with high-sheen finish, dimensions: 10×19 (front) and 12×20 (rear). Weight saving: 4.0 kg
  • Newly developed Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 sports tyres, size 275/35 R 19 (front) and 325/30 R 20 (rear), for more grip and sporty cornering limits
  • AMG speed-sensitive sports steering with modified power steering characteristic for optimum steering precision and outstanding control of the vehicle

AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system as standard

The brake system of the SLS AMG Coupé Black Series boasts excellent stopping power and outstanding fade resistance. The AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system is fitted as standard.

The ceramic brake discs, measuring 402 x 39 millimetres at the front and 360 x 32 millimetres at the rear, are characterised by enhanced thermal stability due to their increased hardness, accompanied by a weight reduction of around 40 percent.

As a result of the reduced unsprung masses, they optimise both comfort and grip. The reduced rotating masses at the front axle provide for more direct steering response. The weight saving with the AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system compared to a conventional steel/aluminium brake system amounts to 16 kilograms.

The SLS AMG Coupé Black Series comes equipped with high-performance brake pads as standard, which further enhance fade resistance when the vehicle is being raced hard on a racetrack.

Design inspired by the SLS AMG GT3 customer sport racing car

The design of the SLS AMG Coupé Black Series derives a special fascination from its similarity to the SLS AMG GT3 customer sport racing car. Wide flared wings with an added width of 13 mm (front) and 26 mm (rear) on each side create the necessary space for the 275 mm and 325 mm sports tyres.

Darkened headlamps and black surrounds for the tail lights give the SLS AMG Coupé Black Series a distinctly muscular and aggressive look. Besides the front apron with carbon-fibre front splitter and the carbon-fibre rear apron with diffuser, further visual indicators of the technology transfer from the world of motorsport include the side skirts with carbon-fibre inserts and the simulated air intakes in front of the rear wheels.

The wing-like cross fin and the star recess in the radiator grille are finished in high-gloss black to match the exterior mirrors and the fins on the bonnet.

Matt black AMG forged wheels in Black Series-specific design

When viewed from the side, the eye is caught by the stylishly integrated side skirts, which combine with the feature line to stunning effect. The carbon trim elements fitted along the bottom at the sides extend the line traced by the carbon-fibre front splitter back to the rear.

AMG forged wheels in an exclusive 5-twin-spoke design painted in matt black with a high sheen finish provide a clear view of the AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system behind. AMG forged wheels in matt black with a high-sheen rim flange are available as an alternative.

The rear of the SLS AMG Coupé Black Series presents a beefy appearance on a par with that of the front end. The broad wings and the striking rear diffuser are the predominant features here.

The two sets of chrome twin tailpipes with a square cross-section provide visual confirmation of the gull-wing super sports car’s power and dynamism – as well as delivering the soundtrack to match. The exclusive AMG logo with contrasting Black Series lettering in black adds a discreet yet unmistakable touch at the top right of the boot lid.

The dynamic styling of the SLS AMG Coupé Black Series is beautifully complemented by the AMG solarbeam paintwork. This optionally available shade is exclusive to the Black Series model. Six other exterior paint finishes from the SLS AMG range are also available, including the matt paint finish designo magno allanite grey.

Optimum aerodynamic balance and effective cooling

The Black Series-specific design has more than just visual impact: it also serves to improve both downforce and cooling with only a slight increase in the coefficient of drag (Cd value). The front apron with carbon-fibre front splitter and the rear apron with diffuser help to optimise the aerodynamic balance.

Giving the vehicle’s underbody an even slicker form and extending the diffuser forward has lowered the Cd value while increasing downforce at the rear axle. The diffuser extends beyond the profile of the rear apron, which produces yet more downforce at the rear.

The upshot of this is greater handling stability at high speeds. Visible air openings behind black grilles are designed to ensure controlled discharge of the hot air in the area between the transmission and the AMG titanium sports exhaust system.

The enlarged air intakes in the front end with carbon-fibre flics on the inside ensure an optimum air inflow into the cooling modules at the front. The carbon-fibre insert on the sides with air outlet and a black fin is also reminiscent of the SLS AMG GT3; the suction effect helps to dissipate hot air from the engine compartment and lower the temperature level. The result is supremely stable operation, even during rigorous use on the racetrack.

As on the SLS AMG GT3, the carbon-fibre bonnet features a central air outlet. Apart from effectively discharging the engine heat, this outlet also increases downforce at the front axle and improves the Cd value.

The engineers at AMG have utilised the vacuum effect to deliver the the double benefit of dissipating the hot air from the engine compartment at the same time as drawing up the cool airflow from the vehicle’s underbody.

AMG Aerodynamics package with carbon-fibre components

The exhilarating performance can be given an even more dynamic edge by opting for the AMG Aerodynamics package, which also has the effect of reinforcing the visual likeness to the SLS AMG GT3 customer sport racing car.

This package replaces the standard-fit rear aerofoil that extends automatically at speeds of over 120 km/h with a fixed carbon-fibre aerofoil in the style of the SLS AMG GT3 that can be adjusted to two settings.

The rear aerofoil is braced by aluminium elements on a special insert on the boot lid and provides for even greater contact pressure at the rear axle – not least as a result of the Gurney flap, named after its inventor, Dan Gurney, a former racing driver, designer and team owner. This eight millimetre-high spoiler lip fitted to the rear aerofoil at an angle of 90 degrees results in a further increase in downforce without significantly increasing drag.

The carbon-fibre rear aerofoil can be adjusted to any angle between 2 and 10 degrees in just a few steps. The two most aerodynamically efficient settings are aerofoil level 1 and aerofoil level 2. Level 1 is the aerodynamic configuration for everyday use: with an angle of attack of 2 degrees, the carbon-fibre aerofoil produces a light downforce at the rear axle.

Level 2 is recommended for use on the racetrack: the aerofoil’s 10 degree angle of attack produces 50 kilograms of contact pressure at the rear axle at a speed of 200 km/h, without a significant increase in lift at the front axle. The vehicle’s handling stability benefits from the increased downforce at the rear wheels in fast corners especially. A look at the aerodynamic data furthermore shows that the SLS AMG Coupé Black Series with AMG Aerodynamics package achieves better wind tunnel figures at aerofoil level 1 than without the package.

The carbon-fibre rear aerofoil is complemented by carbon-fibre flics mounted on the sides in front of the front wheels as well as an additional spoiler lip fitted in the centre below the front splitter.

Both of these aerodynamic-enhancing components bring about a further reduction in lift at the front axle. Even in aerofoil level 2, the aerodynamic balance of the SLS AMG Coupé Black Series has been configured so as to still create a small amount of lift at the front wheels. This “pitching moment” as the aerodynamics engineers call it is desirable on a front-mid-engined super sports car, as it dampens the response to steering inputs at very high speeds.

As a result of this aerodynamic set-up, critical driving situations that would otherwise be triggered by a sudden evasive manoeuvre at high speed, for instance, can be prevented by design, and the driver can enjoy an enhanced sense of safety and stability at the wheel.

Sporty, functional interior exuding high quality

A functional, sporty racing-car atmosphere is prevalent inside the SLS AMG Coupé Black Series, with high-quality materials demonstrating precision workmanship and exquisitely designed details. There is a choice of two colour variants: Alcantara® anthracite or Alcantara® anthracite/red. With the two-tone variant, the door centre panels and the detailing on the centre console and above the glove compartment are finished in red.

The AMG performance steering wheel with flattened bottom rim section is fully trimmed in Alcantara® for a good grip. It also features a sporty red 12 o’clock marking at the top. The solid metal curved insert features a high-gloss black paint finish to match the high-gloss black surrounds of the air vents.

Further exclusive, high-class details include the “AMG Black Series” badge on the glove compartment and the so-called “3D seam” running horizontally along the dashboard: the dashboard’s leather covering is punctuated by a fine Alcantara® strip in anthracite across its entire width. Red contrasting stitching in the leather lends an accomplished finish to the 3D seam, underscoring the handcrafted character.

The combination of high-quality designo leather and functional Alcantara® features throughout the interior – on the bottom section of the dashboard, for example, on the door centre panels and on the AMG sports bucket seats, whose centre sections are upholstered in Alcantara®. Embossed AMG emblems on the head restraints are further exclusive, eye-catching features. In addition to providing superb lateral support at high cornering speeds, the AMG sports bucket seats are also 15 kilograms lighter than the standard AMG sports seats.

The omission of the COMAND APS multimedia system reduces the vehicle’s weight by an additional six kilograms as a further demonstration of the SLS AMG Coupé Black Series’ uncompromisingly purist character.

The carbon-fibre fascia fitted between the air vents in place of the screen adds to the racing atmosphere. COMAND APS is available ex factory together with AMG Performance Media and the reversing camera as part of the optional “Infotainment System” package. The vehicle’s occupants will find that the entire centre console incorporating the AMG DRIVE UNIT has also been encased in the motorsport material carbon fibre.

Bold highlights are added by red seat belts and red contrasting stitching on the AMG sports bucket seats, the centre console, the upper and lower section of the dashboard and the door panelling. The floor mats similarly feature red edging.

Bang & Olufsen BeoSound AMG high-end surround sound system

One of the highlights among the optional equipment and appointments is the Bang & Olufsen BeoSound AMG high-end surround sound system, developed by Mercedes-Benz and Mercedes-‑AMG together with renowned Danish audio specialist Bang & Olufsen. The sound system also offers playback in Dolby Digital 5.1 quality, of course, and enables an exclusive audio experience of the very highest standard.

This performance is made possible by a 1000 W amplifier and eleven high-end loudspeakers with neodymium driver in conjunction with precision distribution of the audio signals by the sound processor.

This integrated digital sound processor (DSP) enables the driver to select a special B&O sound menu via COMAND. Individual Driver, Passenger and Central sound setups can be selected in True Image™ mode, resulting in a realistic audio experience in the selected listening position.

Various sound modes are additionally stored in the “Sound Mode” menu, offering a choice between a “Reference” high-end studio sound and a wide-dispersion surround option. While “Reference” focuses on an unadulterated rendering of the artist’s performance, the special surround sound mode with its wide sound dispersion is especially suited to live music or concerts, creating a unique panoramic sound stage in the vehicle without compromising the natural character of the recording.

The illuminated 50 W tweeters featuring Acoustic Lens Technology on the dashboard are a very special visual highlight. The 250 W‑subwoofer is accommodated in the rear shelf. Top-quality Bang & Olufsen aluminium loudspeaker covers in “silver chrome” bearing the Bang & Olufsen logo provide a further indication of the exclusive character of the Bang & Olufsen BeoSound AMG high-end surround sound system.

Exclusive increase in output to 373 kW (507 hp)

A new level of dynamism: the C 63 AMG “Edition 507”

The C 63 AMG models are becoming even more dynamic: the AMG high-performance cars are being fitted with an AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine with increased output as exclusive “Edition 507” models.

The increase of 37 kW (50 hp) now brings output to 373 kW (507 hp) with a maximum torque of 610 Nm, and is a result of a technology transfer from the SLS AMG: the eight-cylinder naturally aspirated engine from the super sports car features forged pistons, connecting rods and a lightweight crankshaft.

An AMG high-performance composite braking system with red brake callipers is fitted as standard. The C 63 AMG “Edition 507” is designed to appeal to ambitious sports drivers who take pleasure in top-class technology as well as exclusive design and appointment details.

The C 63 AMG “Edition 507” produces 373 kW (507 hp), and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.2 seconds in the guise of the Saloon and Coupé, and in
4.3 seconds as the Estate.

As such it outperforms the 336 kW (457 hp) standard model by two tenths of a second, and the variants with the AMG Performance package which produce 358 kW (487 hp) by one tenth of a second each.

The top speed of all variants is 280 km/h (electronically limited): this is because as standard the “Edition 507” models are fitted with the AMG Driver’s package. In addition to an increase in the restriction imposed on the top speed, the package also includes a voucher for attendance of a driver training session at the AMG Driving Academy.

C 63 AMG “Edition 507” featuring technology transfer from the SLS AMG

The increase in power output to 373 kW (507 hp) at 6800 rpm comes courtesy of the modified inner workings of the AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine: the forged pistons adopted from the SLS AMG, together with new connecting rods and a lightweight crankshaft, translate into a weight saving of three kilogrammes.

The reduced mass inertia benefits the agility of the eight-cylinder M 156 naturally aspirated engine, which now features even higher levels of flexibility. The maximum torque has also increased by 10 Nm, jumping from 600 to 610 Nm at 5200 rpm.

The titanium grey-painted variable intake manifold is a characteristic feature of the uprated V8 engine. A new engine control system rounds off the series of implemented powertrain measures.

Externally, the C 63 AMG “Edition 507” is characterised by a host of exclusive design features: most notable among these is the bonnet – it originates from the C 63 AMG Coupé Black Series.

Two openings in the distinctive aluminium bonnet help with expelling engine heat. New AMG light-alloy cross-spoke wheels with tyres in sizes 235/35 R 19 (front) and 255/30 R 19 (rear) are another exclusive feature of the “Edition 507”.

The AMG light-alloy wheels are produced using particularly lightweight forging technology and are available in two variants: painted in titanium grey with a high-sheen finish, or matt black with high-sheen rim flanges. AMG sports stripes in matt graphite grey above the side sill panels are yet another new feature of the exterior.

The spoiler lip on the boot lid (Saloon and Coupé only), the exterior mirror housings as well as the surrounds on the radiator grille and daytime driving lights are all finished in high-gloss black. Darkened headlamps also add a distinctively sporty touch. Available as an optional extra exclusively for the C 63 AMG “Edition 507” is the designo magno platinum paint finish.

AMG high-performance braking system featuring composite technology

As standard, the C 63 AMG “Edition 507” comes with an even more powerful AMG high-performance braking system featuring composite technology. The front axle makes use of composite brake discs measuring 360 x 36 mm.

The advantages of the composite design include higher fatigue strength and lower warping characteristics. In addition, composite discs also tip the scales at a lighter weight: the reduced unsprung masses improve the response of the spring/damping elements.

With composite technology, the brake discs are connected to an aluminium bowl via eight cast bracket arms. This results in homogenous elongation of the friction ring under heavy loads.

The brake discs are ventilated and perforated all round and are decelerated by means of 6-piston aluminium fixed callipers on the front axle and 4-piston fixed callipers on the rear axle. The brake callipers are painted red all round.

“Edition 507” interior: even more dynamic and exclusive

The decidedly sporty yet functional interior of the C 63 AMG is even more dynamic and exclusive in the case of the “Edition 507”. Three different equipment and appointment variants are available to choose from: porcelain designo leather/DINAMICA, black designo leather/DINAMICA and black designo leather.

In the case of the designo leather/DINAMICA upholstery, light-coloured contrasting topstitching makes for an attractive highlight.

The AMG Performance steering wheel in Alcantara® with light-coloured contrasting stitching has a 12-o’clock marking. The selector lever of the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission is finished in DINAMICA and features an AMG badge. The steering wheel and selector lever gaiter also have light-coloured contrasting stitching.

In the AMG instrument cluster, red applications serve to visually differentiate this variant from the other C 63 AMG models. The trim in high-gloss black piano lacquer look and the “Edition 507” badge on the trim on the front passenger side round off the high-quality, exclusive interior.
