The Mercedes-Benz W221 is a chassis code of S-Class, the successor of Mercedes-Benz W220. The vehicle was unveiled in 2005 Frankfurt Motor Show.

Styling

The W221 S-Class’ exterior styling is distinctly different to the W220. The rear styling is similar to the E65 BMW 7 Series, and also the Mercedes-Benz Maybach – the larger saloon from Daimler AG’s flagship brand, which was presented to public in 1997.

Inside, the W221’s interior is also significantly different from the preceding model. The interior features an instrument cluster shroud that also contains the navigation screen, with silver effect air vents below, and a square, analog clock within the vents.

Below the vents are metal tab switches with a black field behind them, to control the HVAC system.

On the center console, a metal control wheel for the COMAND system sits above a piece of wood, surrounded by metal buttons.

Throughout the interior, many buttons are metal, with black fields above them denoting the switches’ function.

The W221 is slightly larger in all dimensions than the W220, with a longer wheelbase and more interior room.

 

Models

S 320 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY (2008-2009)

It is a replacement of S 320 CDI with improved fuel efficiency. Changes include on-demand electric hydraulic power steering pump, standstill decoupling for the 7G-TRONIC transmission, 17-inch light-alloy wheels with reduced rolling resistance tyres.

Germany model has MSRP of (incl. VAT) for short wheelbase version, €78,718.50 (incl. VAT) for long-wheelbase version.

S 400 HYBRID (2009-)

The vehicle was originally announced under the name S 400 BlueHYBRID. The vehicle was unveiled in 2009 Chicago Auto Show.

It is a mild hybrid with the lithium ion battery was supplied by Continental AG. The cells were provided by Johnson Controls-Saft.

Production vehicle was sold as S 400 HYBRID. US models went on sale in August 2009, but was delivered to dealers in 2009-10. Japan models went on sale in October 2009.

ESF 2009 (2009)

It is a safety research vehicle based on S 400 HYBRID, but with braking bag, Interactive Vehicle Communication. The vehicle was unveiled in Enhanced Safety of Vehicles (ESV) Conference in Stuttgart.

S 420 CDI (2006-)

The vehicle were delivered beginning in December 2006, with MSRP of short-wheelbase model at (net price ) and the long-wheelbase model at (net price ).

S 600 Guard (2006-)

It is an armoured vehicle with European B6/B7 resistance level. It resists military-standard small-arms projectiles and provides protection against fragments from hand grenades and other explosive charges.

Additional safety features include run-flat tyres, 90L self-sealing fuel tank and a fire-extinguishing system.

Other features include Michelin PAX 245-700 R470 AC tires, 90L fuel tank, optional emergency fresh-air system, pneumatic emergency control system for the power windows (operates independently of the on-board electronics), emergency boot opening facility, optional Panic Alarm System, rear camera, heated front windscreen and heated front windows, adjustable doorhold system for all four doors, rear doors that are pulled shut automatically over the last few millimetres, rear electric roller blinds.

The vehicle has top speed of 210 km/h (130 mph), with GVW of 4,200 kg (9,300 lb).

S 600 Guard Pullman (2008-)

It was based on the Mercedes Benz S 600 L Guard, but in limousine form with an extra-long wheelbase. It includes a rear entrance with increased headroom, 4 seats behind driver partition.

Other features included reinforcement of the links between the suspension components and the bodyshell, specifically targeted modification of the suspension components themselves, an additional brace (strut tower brace) between the front suspension struts, two additional steel springs at the rear to complement the air suspension, larger twin-calliper front brake discs.

The vehicles were delivered beginning in late 2008. The production launch marked the 80th anniversary of the Mercedes-Benz special-protection unit.

S 63 AMG, S 65 AMG

S 63 AMG includes Mercedes-Benz M156 engine rated 525 PS (386 kW; 518 hp) and 465 pound-feet 630 N·m (465 ft·lbf).

S 65 AMG includes Mercedes-Benz M275 engine rated 612 PS (450 kW; 604 hp) and 1,000 N·m (738 ft·lbf), restyled front and rear bumpers and rocker panels, larger wheels, brakes, and tires, four exhaust pipes, modified and reprogrammed suspension for sport biased handling, and various interior changes.

2009 version

The engines had reduced fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by up to 3%. Styling changes include arrow-shaped radiator grille, AMG-specific daytime running lights, two transverse air outlets on each side, “6.3 AMG” or “V12 Biturbo” lettering on the front wings, redesigned exterior mirrors, 52-LED tail lights.

Active Body Control provides crosswind stabilisation as standard equipment. Torque Vectoring Brake is added.

Interior include PASSION leather upholstery, AMG-specific analogue clock featuring an IWC design.

Optional accessories include:

  • AMG 20-inch forged wheels with 255/35R20 front and 275/30R20 rear tyres
  • AMG trim elements in carbon fibre/piano lacquer
  • AMG floor mats

The vehicles went on sale in June 2009, with S 65 AMG available in long-wheelbase version only. The vehicles were unveiled in 2009 Shanghai motor show.

Concepts

S 300 BLUETEC Hybrid (2007)

It is a concept vehicle. It included a 2.2L 4-cylinder diesel engine with urea injection and electric motor with combined rating of 224 PS (165 kW; 221 hp) and 560 N·m (410 ft·lbf), with fuel consumption of 5.4 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres.

The vehicle was unveiled in 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show. The car was estimated to go on sale in Europe in 2010.

S 400 BLUETEC Hybrid (2007)

It included V6 BLUETEC diesel engine and a electric motor with combined ratings of 265 bhp (198 kW) and 465 lb·ft (630 N·m). The vehicle was unveiled in 2007 LA Motor Show.

Mercedes-Benz Concept Ocean Drive (2007)

It is a concept vehicle based on long wheelbase version of S 600, but with two-tone yarn fabric roof.

The vehicle features an oversized grille, redesigned LED headlights and restyled trunk, LED head and tail lamps, a revised air dam, restyled flanks without the wheelhouse bulges, door handles that fit flush into the body, AIRSCARF neck-level heating system, on all 4 seats.

The car also contains pillarless windows that provide an unobstructed view for occupants when the large soft top is down.

Other features include aluminum wheels with 275/35ZR21 tires. The vehicle was unveiled in 2007 NAIAS.

S 500 Plug-in HYBRID (2009)

It is a plug-in hybrid vehicle. It included 3.5L V6 engine, hybrid module rated 60 PS (44 kW; 59 hp) and 250 Nm (180 lb/ft), lithium-ion battery rated over 10 kWh, 30 km electric-only driving range.

The vehicle was unveiled in 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show.

Be ahead: the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class – Superlative in design and technology

Generation-change at the pinnacle of automotive engineering: Mercedes-Benz presents the new S-Class.

The new luxury saloon will be appearing in the showrooms of company-owned outlets and authorised dealerships as of autumn 2005.

As in the preceding series, the new S-Class will introduce technical innovations which make the flagship Mercedes model an example for others to follow.
Pioneering safety features and exemplary comfort continue to be the outstanding attributes of the S-Class.
The new saloon also sets standards in driving dynamics with its agile handling, while offering even more driving pleasure with new, more powerful engines.
The new S-Class is replacing a model series which is the world No. 1 in the luxury class, and of which around 485,000 have been produced since 1998.
For more than five decades, the letter “S” in the model designation of Mercedes cars has signified a special aura, intelligent technology and the highest quality.
The new S-Class not only continues this tradition, but lends a new meaning to it. It is a technological pacemaker with its pioneering innovations for more safety, comfort and practicality, and like its predecessors it will influence the automotive development of the future.
The saloon exudes this poise and assurance even at first glance. Its design emphasises the confident, powerful and elegant character of the new S-Class, which makes every journey an experience.
Achieving even more technological highlights was a challenge for the engineers in Stuttgart and Sindelfingen, for the bar was set very high: the previous S-Class, which had been repeatedly voted the “Best Car in the World” since its presentation in 1998, was a hard act to follow.
The progress Mercedes-Benz has made with the new saloon is based on this already high level.
A dozen technical innovations are entering series production for the first time on board the new S-Class – from Brake Assist PLUS with radar sensors to seats with an extended massage function, from the night view assist system with the latest infra-red technology to the new COMAND system, and from preventive PRE-SAFE® occupant protection with additional functions to Parking Assist.
Safety: Brake Assist with radar and latest-generation PRE-SAFE®
In the field of vehicle safety, Mercedes-Benz is redoubling its commitment to accident prevention with the preventive system Brake Assist PLUS.
This system registers vehicles ahead by radar and gives a warning if the gap is too small or the closing speed is too high.
If a collision threatens, Brake Assist PLUS calculates the ideal braking assistance in fractions of a second and makes this available immediately – even if the driver applies too little pressure to the brake pedal.
This significantly reduces the incidence of rear-end collisions. The adaptive brake light, which warns following traffic by flashing during emergency braking, also makes a major contribution.
Mercedes-Benz combines Brake Assist PLUS with the equally unique occupant protection system PRE-SAFE®, which offers even more safety functions on board the new S-Class.
PRE-SAFE® recognises potential accident situations as they arise: if braking deceleration exceeds a certain level or a skid is imminent, the system tensions the front seat belts as a precaution and inflates air cushions in the multicontour seats to envelop and support the driver, front passenger and rear seat occupants.
For the first time Mercedes-Benz has also integrated the side windows into this preventive protection system; they are automatically closed when an accident threatens.
This combination of the new Brake Assist PLUS system and PRE-SAFE® is a further enhancement to occupant protection.
Mercedes-Benz is the world’s first and only vehicle brand with a comprehensive safety system of this kind, which already goes into action before an impending accident.
Support systems: DISTRONIC PLUS and the new night view assist
Brake Assist PLUS is available in combination with the likewise improved proximity control system DISTRONIC PLUS.
This radar-supported system now operates at all speeds between zero and 200 km/h, and ensures even greater driver comfort.
In stop-and-go traffic DISTRONIC PLUS keeps the new S-Class at the right distance from the vehicle ahead, automatically brakes the saloon to a standstill if necessary and accelerates it back to the required speed when the traffic starts moving again.
In this way the support system reduces the driver’s workload and provides considerable benefits in driver-fitness safety.
The equipment package with Brake Assist PLUS and DISTRONIC PLUS also includes a new Parking Assist system which likewise uses radar sensors.
These have a longer range than ultrasonic signals, therefore the driver receives earlier warning of an impending collision when reversing into a parking space.
With the innovative night view assist system which is premiered in the new S-Class, Mercedes-Benz has made a further, major contribution to reducing the risk of accidents during the hours of darkness.
This system is based on infra-red light, which is invisible to the human eye and will therefore not dazzle oncoming traffic.
Two infra-red headlamps illuminate the road, extending the driver’s range of vision to more than 150 metres when on low beam.
Night view assist therefore makes pedestrians, cyclists, parked cars and other obstacles visible very much sooner.
An infra-red camera mounted on the inside of the windscreen records the reflected image of the road ahead and displays this in the instrument cluster.
Dimensions: larger, more comfortable and even more luxurious
The new flagship model by Mercedes-Benz is larger than its predecessor in every respect.
There is a choice of two body lengths – 5076 or 5206 millimetres – which is 33 and 43 millimetres, respectively, more than the previous S-Class.
The wheelbase has increased by 70/80 millimetres to 3035 and 3165 millimetres, respectively.
The body is also 16 millimetres wider and 29 millimetres higher than before.
 These new dimensions create the conditions for an interior concept which provides every single passenger with first-class comfort.
Interior parameters such as shoulder-room and elbow-room have increased by up to 39 millimetres, while headroom has again improved by up to five millimetres.
Rear seat passengers in the long-wheelbase version benefit from a greater distance between the seats (+ 10 mm) and more knee-room (+ 11 mm) compared to the preceding series.
The capacity of the boot has increased by 60 litres to 560 litres (VDA measuring method).
Luxurious exotic wood and chrome trim, attractively contoured controls in aluminium and carefully coordinated colours characterise the atmosphere in the interior, producing an immediate feeling of wellbeing.
The dashboard with its sophisticated, sweeping lines is yet another masterpiece by Mercedes designers, for whom form and function are ideals which share equal status.
Accordingly the cockpit not only conveys a feeling of safety, but is also extraordinarily well laid-out and practical – from the very first moment, man and vehicle enter into a harmonious relationship in the new S-Class.
Operating concept: colour displays, direct-selection switches and COMAND controller
That is also assured by the newly developed and thoroughly tested operating concept.
This is based on findings from extensive ergonomic and perceptive psychology studies, and also takes into account the results of acceptance tests with Mercedes customers around the world.
The major characteristic of the intelligent operating concept in the new S-Class is rapid access to functions which are used particularly frequently.
The system is therefore specifically designed for redundancy: depending on his preferred habits, the driver is able to control functions such as the radio, TV-receiver, CD/DVD changer, telephone and navigation system either using conventional switches, via buttons on the multifunction steering wheel or with the help of the improved COMAND system.
The direct-selection switches in the centre console are so ergonomically positioned that the driver is able to operate them conveniently and without looking down.
It is also possible to operate the standard automatic climate control system in two different ways: via COMAND or using an attractively styled array of switches beneath the air vents.
The steering wheel and instrument cluster are the primary areas in the new operating concept. These integrate all the important information and functions required by the driver.
The centrepiece is a colour screen with the latest display technology for a bright, crystal-clear image.
The lower edge of the cockpit display has a plain-text array with which up to seven main menus for individual settings, display modes and operating functions can be controlled, depending on the level of equipment.
For rapid selection of these functions Mercedes-Benz has developed the controls on the standard multifunction steering wheel further, using circular, illuminated five-way buttons which the driver operates by light thumb pressure.
Another new feature which improves operating convenience and allows a modern cockpit design is DIRECT SELECT – electronic control of the standard 7G-TRONIC seven-speed automatic transmission by nudging an attractively styled lever on the right of the steering column.
Thanks to this technology, Mercedes engineers were able to dispense with the usual selector lever on the centre console and redesign the tunnel covering.
The innovative “Cockpit Management and Data System” – COMAND for short – has likewise been redesigned and now offers even more features.
In addition to the familiar telematics and audio units, various vehicle functions which previously required individual switches have now been integrated into the system.
The central operating unit is the new COMAND controller on the transmission tunnel. It is used to select the main and sub-menus with which the required functions are activated.
If a car phone is fitted ex factory, the padded handrest behind the controller can be flipped up to reveal the telephone keypad.
The large COMAND colour display is positioned at the same height as the instrument cluster, and therefore even more favourably within the field of vision of the driver and front passenger.
A new operating concept, up-to-date colours and clear, photo-quality graphics also make the menu selection procedure a gratifying visual experience.
The COMAND system in the new S-Class includes a radio, CD/DVD player and a port for computer memory cards (PCMCIA cards) as standard.
On request Mercedes-Benz will equip COMAND with a Europe-wide navigation system whose data are now stored on a hard drive. This allows even faster route calculation than before.
Comfort: new seats with a massage function and air suspension as standard
Mercedes customers are able to adapt the newly developed seats in the new S-Class to suit their personal comfort requirements.
Electrically adjustable, 16-way front seats with lumbar supports are standard equipment.
There is also an optional choice of luxury seats with heating and ventilation, multicontour seats (front and rear) and dynamic multicontour seats (front) whose squab and backrest contours adapt to the relevant driving situation to provide the best possible lateral support at all times.
The dynamic multicontour seat is also equipped with separate air chambers in the backrest which are successively inflated and deflated at the touch of a button, massaging the back muscles for the wellbeing of its occupant.
The intensity and speed of the massage function can be adjusted in four stages by means of the COMAND system.
The suspension with its standard, improved AIRMATIC air suspension system also makes a major contribution to the excellent ride comfort in the new S-Class.
At the touch of a button the driver is able to choose between a comfort-oriented or more sporty configuration.
Beyond 120 km/h and in Sport mode, the suspension is automatically lowered by up to 20 millimetres to improve the handling dynamics, aerodynamics and fuel consumption even further.
The Active Body Control suspension system (optional, standard equipment in the S 600) is a further milestone in suspension engineering which has been improved even further for the new S-Class.
The newly developed braking system ADAPTIVE BRAKE has additional functions which for example assist the driver when moving off on gradients and shorten braking distances in the wet.
The parking brake is electrically assisted for the first time – the brake is applied merely by pressing a button, and is released automatically when the car moves off.
Performance: over 26 percent more output from the new V8 engine
Three of the four engines available for the new S-Class are new developments by Mercedes-Benz. They generate up to 26 percent more output and up to 15 percent more torque.
In addition to the 3.5-litre V6 engine with 200 kW/272 hp, a new eight-cylinder unit developing 285 kW/388 hp and a muscular 530 Newton metres of torque from a mere 2800 rpm upwards will already be available at the time of the market launch in autumn 2005.
It accelerates the S 500 from standstill to 100 km/h in just 5.4 seconds.
From the first quarter of 2006 Mercedes-Benz will be extending the range of engines for the S-Class with the new V6 CDI engine, which has a particulate filter as standard in certain countries.
This direct-injection unit has an output of 170 kW/231 hp and generates a maximum torque of 540 Newton metres from 1600 rpm.
This means that the new S 320 CDI betters the preceding model by 13 percent in output and eight percent in torque.
The output of the twelve-cylinder engine in the top-of-the-range S 600 (available from the first quarter of 2006) has increased to 380 kW/517 hp, while torque has increased by just under four percent to a remarkable 830 Newton metres from 1900 rpm.
As standard equipment, the V6 and V8 engines for the new S-Class are combined with the unique seven-speed automatic transmission 7G-TRONIC.
Success: number one in the luxury class
The new S-Class is replacing a successful series which has captured the top end of this market segment in every region of the world.
Even in its last year of production the flagship saloon by Mercedes-Benz is the worldwide market leader among the world’s luxury saloons, with around 17,000 units sold (as of May 2005).
Accolades achieved by the previous S-Class include around four dozen prizes and awards in international competitions, with numerous titles such as “Best Car”, “Most Innovative Saloon”, “Highest Design Quality” or “World’s Finest Car”.

2009 facelift

The revised 2009 S-Class was announced on Apr 08, 2009 at Stuttgart. The minor model update includes minor cosmetic changes and several new features:

  • Adaptive Highbeam Assist – detects vehicles with their lights on which are travelling towards or ahead of the car in which the system is fitted and controls the headlamps to ensure the largest possible range without dazzling other drivers.
  • Blind spot monitor
  • Lane Keeping Assist – detects road markings and senses if the driver is inadvertently straying out of the lane. If so, the driver is warned by short vibrations of the steering wheel. This system can also distinguish between intentional (for example, overtaking or merging) and unintentional lane departures, reducing the number of false alarms.
  • Speed Limit Assist – identifies speed limit signs in passing and shows the relevant speed limit in the central display. It is standard for S 600.
  • Attention Assist – continuously monitors more than 70 different parameters to detect driver fatigue and tiredness. Once the system detects behaviour that typically indicates the onset of drowsiness, a warning signal is sounded and “ATTENTION ASSIST. Break!” appears in the instrument cluster. It is not standard on S 400 HYBRID.
  • Active Body Control (ABC) crosswind compensation – uses the sensors of the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) to vary the wheel load distribution via the ABC spring struts, depending on the direction and intensity of the crosswind, in order to reduce the adverse effects of crosswinds. This is standard on the S 600.
  • Torque Vectoring Brake – brakes the inside rear wheel during cornering to enhance handling and safety by reducing understeer.

The updated models went on sale in June 2009. Early models include S 350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY, S 450 CDI, S 350, S 400 HYBRID, S 450, S 500, S 600.

The new Mercedes-Benz S 65 AMG is celebrating its world premiere at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit on January 8, 2006.
Its ultra-powerful AMG 6.0-litre V12 biturbo engine delivers performance that many sports car drivers can only dream about: it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.4 seconds and 0 to 200 km/h in just 13.3 seconds (provisional figures).
The top speed is 250 km/h (electronically limited).
Twelve-cylinder biturbo engine with know-how from motorsport
This exclusive performance is made possible by the 5980-cc V12 engine developed by Mercedes-AMG.
The engine’s credentials are outstanding: maximum output of 450 kW/612 hp is maintained from 4750 to 5100 rpm, while the maximum torque of 1000 Nm can be called on from 2000 to 4000 rpm.
Even as low as 1000 rpm, the AMG V12 biturbo engine already delivers 570 Nm of torque to the crankshaft, while 750 Nm is on tap at 1500 rpm.
When designing and building the V12 engine the AMG designers drew on the vast know-how amassed over many years of motorsport involvement.
The AMG V12 engine has a precision-balanced crankshaft made out of high-strength materials, forged pistons made out of special material which is extremely resistant to temperature and pressure, a more effective oil-spray cooling system with a separate individual nozzle for each piston plus larger piston pins.
The main and big-end bearings are also made out of improved materials to compensate for peak temperatures and pressures more effectively.
The charge cycle in the cylinder heads benefits from optimised combustion chambers and longer opening times of the intake valves.
A modified oil pump ensures that all lubrication points are supplied with oil – even in highly demanding conditions.
An engine oil cooler is integrated into the AMG front apron, with an additional engine coolant radiator located in the wheel arch.
Highly efficient charge-air cooler
The charge-air cooler has also been redesigned with a low-temperature radiator in the front of the vehicle that is around 70 percent larger.
The system works on the principle of the air/water heat exchanger for particularly effective cooling of the intake air (which has been compressed by the turbochargers) before it enters the combustion chambers.
The increased surface area of the low-temperature radiator provides a 25 percent reduction in intake temperature and guarantees high power and torque output under all operating conditions and regardless of the outside temperature, even when the engine is operating at full load.
The housings of the compressor and turbine in both turbochargers as well as the turbine and compressor wheels have been enlarged to cope with the maximum charge pressure of 1.5 bar.
The electronically controlled fuel supply with newly developed components operates with a variable system pressure between 3.6 and 5.0 bar.
Depending on the power requirements and outside temperature, the fuel pressure is variably controlled almost instantly.
The engine management system translates the command from the accelerator within milliseconds, delivering an extremely fast response from the engine in all load situations.
AMG sports exhaust system for typical AMG twelve-cylinder vocals
The AMG sports exhaust system with two twin chrome tailpipes in the new V12 design provides the telltale AMG twelve-cylinder vocals on the new S 65 AMG.
The new tri-metallic coating used in the catalytic converters provides a faster response from a cold start, improved emission control as well as longer life.
Naturally the S 65 AMG fulfils all standard exhaust emissions limits such as EU 4.
The ultra-powerful twelve-cylinder unit takes the specific requirements of the U.S. market such as LEV II, “On-Board Diagnosis II” and oxygen sensor diagnosis in its stride.
The special position of the AMG V12 engine was singled out at the “International Engine of the Year Awards 2004”: in the “Best Performance Engine” category the jury chose the 450-kW/612-hp AMG engine as the winner, beating off a field of 70 renowned competitors from Europe, the USA and Japan.
In the AMG engine manufacturing facility, each engine is traditionally hand-built according to the “One man, one engine” philosophy.
That means that each complete AMG V12 engine is assembled from start to finish by a single technician – documented with the technician’s signature on the AMG engine plate.
World first: newly developed AMG high-performance composite brakes
The completely newly developed AMG high-performance composite brakes based on the ADAPTIVE BRAKE system set new standards in terms of stopping distances, sensitivity and durability.
A new twin sliding calliper is used for the front brakes, the kind of innovation people have come to expect from AMG.
This new, unique technology combines the advantages of a floating-calliper brake – lower heat transfer to the brake fluid and significantly improved ride comfort due to the way the brake pads are located – with the performance of a large fixed-caliper brake.
At the rear a large sliding frame-type calliper provides the braking.
Composite brake discs at the front and rear with a diameter of 390 and 365 millimetres respectively ensure the shortest stopping distances, remarkable strength and outstanding sensitivity.
The dual-circuit hydraulic braking system is controlled electronically and supports numerous driver assistance functions that improve safety and comfort.
Multi-piece 19-inch AMG light-alloy wheels with mixed tyres provide the contact with the road. 255/40 ZR 19 tyres are fitted on 8.5-inch-wide wheels at the front, while 275/40 ZR 19 tyres combine with 9.5-inch-wide wheels at the rear.
AMG SPEEDSHIFT 5-speed automatic transmission with steering-wheel gearshift paddles
The drive power is transferred to the wheels in the new S 65 AMG via the AMG SPEEDSHIFT five-speed automatic transmission with AMG steering-wheel gearshift paddles and DIRECT SELECT gearshift.
The conventional automatic selector lever in the centre console is replaced by a lever on the steering column, which the driver nudges to select the transmission settings “P”, “N”, “R” and “D”.
The driver can use the “S/C/M” mode button in the centre console to select from the “Sport”, “Comfort” and “Manual” shift programmes that not only change the transmission characteristics but also the accelerator response and the spring/damper settings of the AMG sports suspension based on Active Body Control.
The gears can also be shifted at any time using the silver-coloured aluminium gearshift paddles on the AMG ergonomic sports steering wheel.
High torque requires a reinforced powertrain
The unrivalled 1000 Nm torque requires a systematically reinforced powertrain on the S 65 AMG.
In the automatic transmission this includes newly developed clutch plates with a high-quality metallic coating and the modified shift and torque converter logic.
Redesigned drive shafts, larger hub carriers as well as strengthened steel spring links supplement these measures.
AMG sports suspension based on Active Body Control
The AMG sports suspension with the Active Body Control system is the perfect complement to the sophisticated drive technology.
The active suspension reduces almost all of the body movements that occur when moving off, negotiating bends and braking.
Bends are negotiated with far less roll; the body roll with fast evasive manoeuvring is effectively suppressed.
Compared with the previous model, the second-generation Active Body Control is even more effective, for instance in reducing body movements in any given driving situation.
Thus the S 65 AMG opens up new dimensions in dynamic handling – while offering appreciably improved ride comfort.
Unmistakable AMG bodystyling creates a distinctive look
Hallmark Mercedes elegance coupled with distinctive sportiness – the first impression you get from the new S 65 AMG.
The new AMG bodystyling is combined superbly with the pronounced flared wheel arches, providing a markedly poised and assured appearance.
At the front the redesigned AMG front apron with enlarged air intakes adds an athletic touch.
The two slanted struts and integrated round fog lamps set in chrome rings make the S-Class look even wider and lower.
The side skirts take up the line of the AMG front apron and emphasise the dynamic feel of the side view; all reinforced through the “V12 biturbo” lettering on the front wings.
The new multi-piece 19-inch five-spoke AMG light-alloy wheels with a star on the centre of the wheel painted in titanium grey blend harmoniously into the overall lines and represent additional highlights.
The powerful AMG bodystyling design of the rear apron and the AMG sports exhaust system comprising two combined twin tailpipes in the new V12 design provide the perfect finishing touches.
Exclusive interior appointments with multicontour seats and “RACETIMER”
The exclusive interior appointments fit in perfectly with the dynamic exterior: open the door and the S 65 AMG welcomes the driver with a large AMG logo in the AMG instrument cluster’s central display.
The integrated custom AMG main menu constantly displays the gear currently selected as well as recommending when to shift up to the next gear.
There is also a choice of engine oil temperature, the battery voltage or the “RACETIMER”.
This new function enables the driver for the first time to calculate lap times in the AMG model – on a private racetrack, for instance.

S 400 HYBRID: CO2 champion with efficient hybrid drive

The S 400 HYBRID is the first passenger car model with hybrid drive to be introduced by Mercedes-Benz.
Its combination of a further developed V6 petrol engine and a compact hybrid module makes the S 400 HYBRID the world’s most efficient luxury saloon with a petrol engine.
In the New European Driving Cycle, the combined fuel consumption is only 7.9 litres per 100 kilometres.
This produces the world’s lowest CO2 emissions in this vehicle and output class – just 186 grams per kilometre.
These exemplary figures go hand in hand with outstanding performance potential: the 3.5-litre petrol engine develops 205 kW/279 hp, while the electric motor adds another 15 kW/20 hp and a starting torque of 160 Nm.
The combined output is therefore 220 kW/299 hp, with a combined maximum torque of 385 newton metres.
Moreover, the new S 400 HYBRID is the first series-production model to be equipped with a particularly powerful lithium-ion battery specifically designed for automotive use.
This is another pioneering step by Mercedes-Benz towards the electrification of the automobile.
The Mercedes-Benz S 400 HYBRID is based on the S 350, and features an extensively modified drive train.
This encompasses a further development of the 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine, an additional magneto-electric motor, the 7G-TRONIC seven-speed automatic transmission specially configured for the hybrid module, the necessary operating and control electronics, the transformer and a high-voltage lithium-ion battery.
The compact hybrid module is a disc-shaped electric motor that also acts as a starter and generator.
The system offers a double benefit, as it both helps to save fuel and increases driving enjoyment.
This is partly due to the booster effect of the electric motor, as it powerfully backs up the petrol engine with additional torque of up to 160 newton metres during the high-consumption acceleration phase.
The driver benefits from the combined action of these two units in the form of even more impressive torque characteristics and smooth, effortlessly superior acceleration.
The hybrid module also has a convenient ECO start/stop function, which switches the engine off when the vehicle is at a standstill – for example at traffic lights.
When it is time to move off again, the electric motor almost imperceptibly restarts the main power unit.
This makes a significant contribution to fuel economy and environmental protection: because the engine restarts first time, and practically instantly, emissions are also minimised during the starting phase.
When the vehicle is braked the electric motor acts as a generator, and is able to recover braking energy by a process of recuperation.
Working in finely tuned partnership, the electric motor supplements the braking effect of the combustion engine and the wheel brakes to deliver a smoothly progressive braking action.
The recuperated energy is stored in a compact yet highly efficient lithium-ion battery in the engine compartment, and made available when required.
This complex system is managed by a high-performance control unit, which is likewise located in the engine compartment.
A milestone on the road to electrification
The centrepiece of the modular, very compact and highly efficient hybrid drive system is the new high-voltage lithium-ion battery, which was specially developed for automotive use and is the first such unit worldwide to be introduced in a series-production vehicle.
In this way Mercedes-Benz is making a trailblazing contribution to the electrification of the car, with the S-Class once again playing the role of the technological trendsetter.
Major advantages over conventional nickel/metal hydride batteries include a higher energy density and better electrical efficiency, together with more compact dimensions and a lower weight.
Thanks to space-saving installation in the engine compartment, where it replaces the conventional starter battery, the generous interior space and boot capacity remain unchanged.
The lithium-ion battery not only stores energy for the electric motor and the electrical refrigerant compressor, but is also connected to the 12-Volt onboard network via the DC transformer to supply power to other standard consumers such as the headlamps and comfort features.
The completely newly designed battery system consists of the cell block with its lithium-ion cells and the electronic cell monitoring system, the battery management function, the high-strength housing, the cooling gel, the cooling plate, the coolant feed and the high-voltage connection.
Optimised thermal efficiency lowers the engine’s fuel consumption
The 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine with variable valve control has been thoroughly re-engineered and improved.
In the process the development engineers made use of the advantages offered by the Atkinson principle,where the expansion phase is longer than the compression phase.
The intake valve is kept open slightly longer between the intake and compression phases, which improves the engine’s thermal efficiency while reducing the specific fuel consumption and untreated emissions.
A new cylinder head, different pistons and a modified camshaft with different camshaft control increase the output by 5 kW/7 hp to 205 kW/279 hp – while reducing fuel consumption at the same time.
Fuel economy also on inter-urban journeys and motorways
Especially on rural journeys and on motorways, the S 400 HYBRID achieves a further efficiency improvement by moving the operating point of the petrol engine to produce a lower specific fuel consumption.
The extremely high start-off torque made possible by the boost effect of the electric motor gives the driver a particularly exhilarating feeling of powerful acceleration, while fuel consumption and emissions are reduced.
The electric motor improves efficiency
The compact, disc-shaped electric motor, which is space-savingly installed between the engine and the 7G-TRONIC 7-speed automatic transmission, improves efficiency even further.
This is a 3-phase AC external rotor magneto motor, which develops a peak output of 15 kW/20 hp and a starting torque of up to 160 newton metres with an operating voltage of 120 Volts.
This compact motor also acts as a starter and generator, adopting the functions of both these conventional ancillary units.
Sophisticated interaction with the internal combustion engine makes numerous additional functions possible that positively influence the emissions and agility of the S 400 HYBRID in equal measure.
Moreover, this disc-shaped motor effectively dampens torsional vibrations in the drive train, thereby further reducing noise and vibrations in the interior.
The result is even more ride comfort for both driver and passengers.
“Boost” effect for even more driving pleasure
The overall system offers extensive benefits: firstly by helping to save fuel, and secondly by increasing driving pleasure with the help of the “boost” effect, where the electric motor gives powerful assistance to the petrol engine with its maximum torque of 160 newton metres right from the beginning of the fuel-intensive acceleration phase.
This means that the hybrid drive system of the S 400 HYBRID moves off powerfully even from very low engine speeds, as the torque curve impressively confirms.
The additional torque of the hybrid module also has a consistently positive effect during subsequent acceleration phases.
In all driving situations, the driver therefore benefits from the interaction between the two units in the form of powerful responsiveness and muscular torque – but without an increased fuel consumption.
The S 400 HYBRID accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 7.3 seconds, and reaches an electronically governed top speed of 250 km/h.
The S 400 HYBRID betters the already very favourable NEDC fuel consumption of the conventionally powered S 350 by up to 2.2 litres per 100 kilometres. CO2 emissions are reduced by about 21 percent.
The ECO start/stop function already saves fuel when rolling to a stop
In addition the hybrid module features an extremely comfortable and efficient start/stop function, which already switches the engine off when the vehicle is rolling to a stop at less than 15 km/h, for example before stopping at traffic lights.
When it’s time to move off again, the electric motor immediately and imperceptibly restarts the main engine as soon as the driver releases the brake pedal or operates the accelerator.
This likewise contributes to fuel economy and environmental conservation: as the engine restarts practically instantly, emissions are also minimised during the starting phase.
The vibrations and jolts that are unavoidable when starting with a conventional starter are also reduced to a minimum.
Steering and climatic comfort remain unchanged, as both the steering servo pump and the refrigerant compressor are electrically powered.
Both systems therefore continue to operate even when the vehicle is at a standstill with the engine automatically switched off.
Even the partial vacuum required for brake servo assistance is generated electrically.
The intelligent control logic is able to detect whether the driver is executing a turning or parking manoeuvre.
In this case the automatic start/stop function is temporarily deactivated, so that these manoeuvres can be carried out in comfort.
Every braking action generates electric power for the battery
When the vehicle decelerates, the electric motor acts as a generator and uses a process of recuperation to convert the kinetic energy into electrical energy.
This energy is stored in the compact yet highly efficient lithium-ion battery, and made available when required.
The electric motor assists the engine braking effect of the internal combustion engine in two smooth, seamless stages: in stage one, on the overrun with no braking action, the electric motor acts as a generator and begins to recuperate energy.
Stage two commences as soon as the driver lightly operates the brake pedal: the generator output is then increased proportionally, and perceived as heavier deceleration by the driver.
Only in the case of heavier deceleration and when more brake pedal pressure is applied are the wheel brakes activated in addition to recuperation.
In this way more electrical energy can be generated, while saving wear and tear on the hydraulic braking system at the same time.
To make the best possible use of this double benefit, Mercedes engineers also developed a new braking system with a new brake pedal module for the S 400 BlueHYBRID.
Cleverly located control electronics
Dedicated control electronics are required to operate the 3-phase AC electric motor in the 120-Volt high-voltage DC network.
The current converter is accommodated in the space formerly occupied by the starter.
As the control electronics heat up as a result of electric currents measuring up to 150 amps, the system is equipped with its own, additional low-temperature cooling circuit.
Mercedes-Benz engineers have accommodated the transformer in the right front wheel arch, where it facilitates the exchange of energy between the 120-Volt high-voltage network and the 12-Volt onboard network – and also allows the option of emergency starting with jump leads if the standard battery should lose its charge.
To ensure a consistently high level of electrical efficiency, the transformer is likewise cooled by a low-temperature circuit.
The 12-Volt lead/acid battery is installed in the boot, and not only supplies the standard consumers but also the monitoring system for the high-voltage components with energy.
Thanks to its interaction with the lithium-ion battery, it is considerably smaller in size and lighter than usual.
Tried-and-tested automatic transmission with a new configuration
Mercedes-Benz developers also adapted the well-proven 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission to suit the hybrid drive, with newly programmed software for the transmission management system.
A newly developed auxiliary oil pump ensures reliable lubrication of the transmission even during phases when the combustion engine is switched off.
This complex system is managed by the modified high-performance engine control unit.
This incorporates extensive functions, and distinguishes between operating conditions such as city traffic, rural journeys, motorway driving or slow manoeuvring.
Hybrid status shown in the instrument cluster
The driver is also able to monitor the status of the hybrid drive system visually.
The instrument cluster has a separate, centrally positioned display showing the energy flow during boost and recuperation phases, as well as the battery charge status.
7-stage safety concept in addition to the Mercedes-Benz standard
As is usual at Mercedes-Benz, the development engineers gave safety aspects their very special attention.
Know-how incorporated into the series-production car included long years of Daimler research experience with fuel-cell technology.
The challenge lay in not only complying with all the worldwide and in-house legal crash test requirements, but also in ensuring the greatest possible safety for the electrical components.
This safety system already applies in production, includes workshop personnel during servicing and maintenance, and also takes the emergency services into account when passengers need to be recovered following an accident.
Accordingly the hybrid technology of the S 400 HYBRID is equipped with an extensive 7-stage safety concept.
  • 1. In the first stage all the wiring is colour-coded to eliminate confusion, and all components are marked with safety instructions. This makes the regular quality checks easier to carry out.
  • 2. The second stage comprises comprehensive contact protection for the entire system by means of generous insulation and newly developed, dedicated connectors.
  • 3. As part of the third stage, the world’s first lithium-ion battery to be used in a series-production model has been given a whole package of carefully coordinated safety measures. This innovative battery is accommodated in a high-strength steel housing, and also secured in place. Bedding the battery cells in a special gel effectively dampens any jolts and knocks. There is also a blow-offvent with a rupture disc and a separate cooling circuit. An internal electronic controller continuously monitors safety and immediately signals any malfunctions.
  • 4. The fourth stage of the safety concept includes separation of the battery terminals, individual safety-wiring for all high-voltage components and continuous monitoring by multiple interlock switches. This means that all high-voltage components are connected by an electric loop. In the event of a malfunction the high-voltage system is automatically switched off.
  • 5. As soon as the ignition is switched to “off” or if there is a fault, circuit breakers are activated in the fifth stage so that the high-voltage components are de-energized. The battery remains charged so that the engine can be re-started at any time.
  • 6. During an accident, the high-voltage system is completely switched off within fractions of a second (stage six).
  • 7. As the seventh and last stage, the system is continuously monitored for short circuits.
Thanks to its compact dimensions and modular design, the additional weight of the overall system is only 75 kilograms – including the comprehensive safety systems.
The superior driving experience for which a Mercedes is known is therefore ensured by this trailblazing and very versatile technology, which can be used for practically all Mercedes-Benz model series.
At 595 kilograms, payload is the same as that of the S 350.
The intelligent high-performance engine management system responds very sensitively to different driving conditions, and optimally configures the drive system for the relevant application, ensuring that both fuel consumption and emissions are kept to the lowest possible level.
  • At standstill the petrol engine is usually switched off, and therefore consumes no fuel. The electric drive of the refrigerant compressor and steering servo pump allows uninterrupted operation of the air conditioning and power steering. Comfort is in no way compromised, and is at the same high level as in all S-Class models. Even the partial vacuum required for brake servo assistance is generated electrically.
  • Moving off and acceleratingaway gently remains a smooth and comfortable procedure. A driver who kicks down the accelerator for a brisk start benefits from the boost function of the electric motor, which produces considerably more dynamic acceleration.
  • At cruising speed, the intelligent electronic management system detects the situation, for example a stretch of relaxed driving on a motorway, and automatically moves the load point of the petrol engine over to lower specific fuel consumption, thereby helping to save fuel and reduce emissions.
  • When rolling to a stopthe recuperation function is activated as soon as the drive is interrupted in any way (foot off the accelerator, engine braking). Once the vehicle speed falls below 15 km/h, the petrol engine is automatically switched off.
  • If the driver brakes using the brake pedal, the electric motor initially begins to convert the vehicle’s kinetic energy into electrical energy. In this case the electric motor acts as a generator, storing the kinetic energy as electrical energy in the lithium-ion battery. This process feels like an engine braking effect to the driver. The conventional disc brakes at the wheels are not yet employed. The disc brakes are only activated if the driver requires heavier deceleration, braking the car together with the engine brake and recuperation.
  • Once the driver selects “R” (reverse) in the 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission when manoeuvring,‑this automatically activates the manoeuvring mode and prevents the ECO start/stop function from switching off the engine at short, frequent intervals.
  • The advantages of the hybrid drive system really come into their own in city traffic, with frequent stops at red traffic lights. Already switching off the petrol engine as the car frequently coasts to a stop significantly lowers the fuel consumption and emissions, while the long recuperation phases increase the battery charge. The electric motor ensures particularly comfortable and rapid restarting when the ECO start/stop function is active.
  • On rural roadsthere are frequent changes between boost, constant speed and recuperation phases. Depending on the nature of the route, large quantities of recuperation energy are available to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. The more braking and acceleration phases there are, the better: uphill and downhill gradients, as well as winding, dynamic stretches, make for the largest savings.
  • The hybrid effect is inherently less important on motorways, however thanks to specific modifications to the V6 petrol engine and the 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission, the driver is also able to achieve significant fuel savings and correspondingly lower emissions on fast road stretches like these.
The S 400 BlueHybrid is produced at the Sindelfingen plant, together with the other S-Class models. The petrol engine, 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission and electric motor are first put together to form a hybrid module, then delivered to the production line as a unit.
To test the practical suitability of the hybrid drive system with a lithium-ion battery, the specialists in Sindelfingen subjected 200 pre-series examples of the S 400 HYBRID to extended trials around the globe.
In the process these test vehicles covered almost ten million kilometres in the extreme heat and cold, under full acceleration and in stop-and-go traffic, and also in typical day-to-day motoring.
To sum up, the drive system of the S 400 HYBRID proved to be robust, efficient and unreservedly suitable for practical operation.
Modular technologies for the environmentally friendly future of the premium car
The new S 400 HYBRID exemplifies the strategy of Mercedes-Benz, whose declared aim is to offer the brand’s customers economical and environmentally compatible premium cars – without compromising in terms of typical brand attributes such as safety, comfort and superior driving pleasure.
The fundamental development strategy that Mercedes-Benz has defined in its “Road to the Future” is focused on the modular design principle: modular drive technologies that can be used individually or in combination depending on vehicle class, operating profile and customer requirements are a key factor in this.

The new standard for efficiency
With a total of four new diesel and petrol engines, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class defines the efficiency standard in its segment.

The accolade of “the world’s most economical luxury saloon” goes to the new S 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY. This high-tech turbodiesel is the first four-cylinder engine in the almost 60-year success story of the S-Class.

Developing an output of 150 kW (204 hp), the S 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY achieves a fuel consumption of just 5.7 litres per 100 kilometres (NEDC), corresponding to  CO2 emissions of 149 grams per kilometre.

The likewise new V6 diesel in the S 350 BlueTEC delivers 190 kW (258 hp) and has a combined consumption of 6.8 litres per 100 kilometres (177 g CO2/km). Thanks to AdBlue® emission control, it is one of the world’s cleanest diesel engines.

With 225 kW (306 hp) in the S 350 BlueEFFICIENCY and 320 kW (435 hp) in the S 500 BlueEFFICIENCY, the new BlueDIRECT engine generation is now entering the lists in the form of V6  and V8 petrol variants.

“The new highly efficient petrol and diesel engines in the S-Class demonstrate that our customers are also able to drive a luxury class car with a clear conscience,” says Dr. Thomas Weber, the member of the Daimler AG Executive Board responsible for corporate research and development at Mercedes-Benz Cars.

All the diesel and petrol engines have direct injection

Mercedes-Benz achieves the considerable reduction in fuel consumption and improvement in efficiency with an intelligent combination of technical innovations that take effect throughout the entire powertrain: in addition to direct injection in the diesel engines, as well as in the new V6 and V8 BlueDIRECT petrol engines, these include the extensively revised, high-efficiency 7G-TRONIC PLUS 7-speed automatic transmission and the ECO start/stop function.

This high-tech package is supplemented with other specific BlueEFFICIENCY measures such as the load-controlled oil pump and tyres with lower rolling resistance.

The four-cylinder diesel in the S 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY is equipped with latest-generation common-rail direct injection.

The high rail pressure of 2000 bar enables output and torque figures at the level of a six-cylinder diesel to be achieved.

In the S 350 BlueEFFICIENCY and S 500 BlueEFFICIENCY, the newly developed BlueDIRECT technology package ensures a lower fuel consumption together with increased power.

The key factor is third-generation spray-guided direct petrol injection with multiple injection and multi-spark ignition. With the innovative V6 and V8 petrol units, Mercedes-Benz is founding a family of engines with a wide range of displacements and outputs.

This is based on a flexible, modular concept that allows the integration of turbochargers, and combination with 4MATIC all-wheel drive as well as hybrid modules.

Fuel economy: ECO start/stop function

The excellent consumption and emission figures are also due to the new ECO start/stop function. This is standard equipment in the S 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY as well as the petrol-powered S 350 BlueEFFICIENCY and S 500 BlueEFFICIENCY models.

The ECO start/stop function switches the engine off as soon as the vehicle stops – for example at traffic lights – and the driver keeps the brake pedal depressed after coming to a halt.

The engine restarts immediately when the driver takes his foot from the brake pedal.

The ECO start/stop function will not switch the engine off if e.g. the desired interior temperature has yet to be reached, if the driver has switched off the system or if drive modes “S” or “M” are active.

An intelligent control system ensures that all functions and comfort systems otherwise remain in operation during the stop phase.

S 250 CDI BlueEFFICEINCY: first 5 litres/100 km car in the luxury segment

With the new S 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY, Mercedes-Benz is now launching the world’s most fuel-efficient luxury saloon.

The first four-cylinder engine in the more than 60-year success story of the S-Class attains a fuel consumption of just 5.7 litres per 100 kilometres, corresponding to CO2 emissions of 149 grammes per kilometre.

This makes the new S 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY the first car in the luxury segment to run on under 6 litres of fuel per 100 km, and the first vehicle in its class to attain CO2 emissions below the 150 gramme mark.

With a peak power output of 150 kW (204 hp) and maximum torque of 500 Newton metres, the four-cylinder CDI guarantees the superior performance which is a hallmark of the S-Class.

It accelerates the large saloon from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.2 seconds, and attains a top speed of 240 km/h.

The 2.2-litre CDI engine already delivers its maximum torque of 500 Nm at 1600 rpm. The high torque at low engine speeds is a result of two-stage turbocharging.

This technology, which is employed in a series-production passenger car diesel engine for the first time in the C and E-Class, is predominantly responsible for the high output at the level of a six-cylinder power unit.

The compact module for the two-stage turbocharger consists of a small high-pressure (HP) turbocharger and a large low-pressure (LP) turbocharger.

These are connected in series, and each has a turbine and a compressor driven by this turbine. The HP turbine is located directly at the exhaust manifold and initially allows exhaust gas to flow through it; it then rotates at up to 215,000 revolutions per minute.

The HP turbine housing features an integral bypass duct, which can be opened or closed by means of a charge-pressure control flap triggered by a vacuum cell.

If the flap is closed, the whole exhaust stream flows through the HP turbine, so that the exhaust-gas energy is available solely for the HP turbine drive. This means that the optimum charge pressure can be built up at low engine revs.

Improved cylinder charging even at low rpm

The two compressors are likewise connected in series, and are in addition connected to a bypass duct. The combustion air from the air filter first flows through the low-pressure compressor, where it is compressed as a function of the LP turbine’s output.

This pre-compressed air then passes into the high-pressure compressor, which is coupled to the HP turbine, where it undergoes further compression.

The result is a genuine two-stage turbocharging process. The major advantage of this sophisticated, demand-related control of the combustion air supply using two turbochargers is improved cylinder charging, and therefore high torque even at low engine speeds.

Fuel consumption is also reduced. When the car is driven, this concept makes itself felt by harmonious driving characteristics with no turbo-lag, a favourable torque curve across the entire engine speed range, great responsiveness and excellent performance.

Fourth-generation common rail technology

A further feature of the innovative and highly efficient diesel engine is fourth-generation common rail direct injection.

The rail pressure of 2000 bar is essential for the delivery of 150 kW (204 hp) of engine output and maximum torque of
500 Nm, while achieving low untreated emissions.

Dynamically controlled engine mounts dampen vibrations

To ensure hallmark S-Class comfort, dynamically controlled engine mounts feature as an innovation in the new S 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY.

The rigidity and damping of these mounts alter according to engine speed, load and vehicle speed, thus preventing the transmission of unwanted vibrations and noise from the engine to the body.

S 350 BlueTEC: highly efficient, clean, powerful

The second new diesel model in the S-Class is the S 350 BlueTEC. Its V6 develops an output of 190 kW (258 hp) from a displacement of 2987 cc.

This is ten percent more than the previous model, which delivered 173 kW (235 hp). The torque of the V6 diesel has increased by 15 percent from 540 to 620 newton metres.

Despite much improved performance, with a combined consumption of 6.8 litres of diesel fuel per 100 kilometres the S 350 BlueTEC betters its predecessor by 0.8 litres or eleven percent.

CO2 emissions have likewise fallen by eleven percent, from 199 to 177 grams per kilometre. The highly efficient V6 diesel gives the luxury saloon effortlessly superior performance: it sprints from zero to 100 km/h in 7.1 seconds and has a top speed of 250 km/h.

Moreover, the S 350 BlueTEC ranks among the world’s cleanest diesel models: BlueTEC is a technology developed by Mercedes-Benz to reduce emissions from diesel vehicles, in particular nitrogen oxides.

To this end AdBlue®, an aqueous urea solution, is injected into the exhaust flow. This releases ammonia, which converts up to 80 percent of nitrogen oxides into harmless nitrogen and water in the downstream SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) catalytic converter.

As a result, the S 350 BlueTEC already complies with the emission levels which are planned for 2014 with the introduction of the EU6 standard.

The AdBlue® tank is installed under the boot floor and has a capacity of 25.7 litres. The supply is replenished at the regular maintenance intervals, every 25,000 kilometres.

BlueDIRECT technology makes V6 and V8 engines fit for the future

With the two BlueDIRECT power plants of the S 350 BlueEFFICIENCY and S 500 BlueEFFICIENCY, Mercedes-Benz is once again raising the bar when it comes to efficiency in the luxury saloon segment.

They are representatives of a new generation of BlueDIRECT V6 and V8 engines.

With its new generation V-engines, Mercedes-Benz is clearly demonstrating that with concerted further development, internal combustion engines still have a great deal of potential, and that V6 and V8 engines with their high level of refinement also have a future.

Centrepiece of the BlueDIRECT technology package is the improved third-generation direct petrol injection with spray-guided combustion and piezo injectors.

In combination with multi-spark ignition it taps further possibilities for improving consumption – in the V8 unit through a further developed homogeneous combustion process (“homogeneous split”); in the V6 engine through a new stratified combustion method with a much larger useful engine characteristic map and lean-burn combustion for optimum consumption (“homogeneous stratified mode”).

As the name indicates, the HOS method is a combination of homogeneous-lean and conventional stratified combustion. The first injection takes place during the intake stroke so that a homogeneous base mixture is formed.

The “stratified” injection proper takes place during the compression stroke prior to ignition, as map-controlled single or double injection.

Multi-spark ignition: best possible ignition to suit requirements

The third-generation direct injection system also features rapid multi-spark ignition (MSI). Following the first spark discharge and a brief combustion period, the coil is rapidly recharged and a further spark is discharged.

The MSI system enables up to four sparks to be discharged in rapid succession within one millisecond, creating a plasma with a larger spatial expansion than conventional ignition.

Controlling this rapid multi-spark ignition enables both the time lapse before the next spark and the combustion duration for the relevant operating point to be optimally adjusted.

This provides scope for optimising the centre of combustion and improving residual gas compatibility, especially during stratified charge operation. Fuel consumption can be reduced by roughly two percent in this way.

Depending on the driving cycle, fuel savings of up to four percent are possible alone by the use of piezo-electric injection technology in combination with multi-spark ignition.

S 350 BlueEFFICIENCY: up to 24 percent lower consumption

The ultra-modern 3.5-litre V6 engine of the S 350 BlueEFFICIENCY and S 350 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY is naturally aspirated, but also suitable for the future use of a turbocharger thanks to the modular design concept.

The most striking change between the new V6 unit and its predecessor is a reduction in the V-angle between the cylinder banks from 90 degrees to 60 degrees.

This enables the primary balancer shaft to be omitted, and as a result the driver registers an outstanding level of comfort.

The design highlights of the 3.5-litre V6 include a completely new air intake and exhaust system in conjunction with a variable resonance intake manifold and optimised inflow and outflow.

Result: with the same displacement, the output compared with the previous 200 kW (272 hp) model is increased by 12.5 percent to 225 kW (306 hp), while maximum torque has increased by 5.7 percent to 370 Newton metres (predecessor: 350 Nm) and now is available over a broad engine speed range from 3500 to 5250 rpm.

In parallel with this substantial increase in power, Mercedes engineers have achieved an even more impressive reduction in fuel consumption.

The predecessor’s NEDC consumption was already good at 10.0 litres of premium petrol per 100 kilometres, but has now been cut by almost a quarter.

The new V6 petrol engine in the S 350 BlueEFFICIENCY is content with 7.6 litres per 100 kilometres. That adds up to savings of 2.4 litres or 24 percent, and makes the S 350 BlueEFFICIENCY the most economical petrol model in the luxury class.

CO2 emissions have also fallen by 24 percent – from 234 to 177 grams per kilometre (short wheelbase) and by 23.5 percent to 179 grams per kilometre (long wheelbase). The S 350 BlueEFFICIENCY combines excellent consumption figures with dynamic performance, accelerating from standstill to 100 km/h in 6.9 seconds. Top speed is 250 km/h (electronically limited).

S 500 BlueEFFICIENCY: more powerful, more economical, more efficient

The new V8 biturbo engine in the S 500 BlueEFFICIENCY and S 500 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY generates 320 kW (435 hp) with 15 percent less displacement (4663 instead of 5461 cc), and therefore around twelve percent more output than its 285 kW (388 hp) predecessor.

Torque has risen from 530 to 700 newton metres – an increase of 32 percent.

Despite a considerable increase in power of 35 kW (47 hp), Mercedes developers have been able to reduce the combined fuel consumption of the S 500 BlueEFFICIENCY significantly.

At 9.3 litres of premium petrol per 100 kilometres, this is 15.5 percent (short wheelbase) and 16 percent (long wheelbase) below the figure for the preceding model.

An outstanding figure in the luxury class, this corresponds to CO2 emissions of 219 grams per kilometre. The excellent efficiency goes hand in hand with superior performance: the S 500 BlueEFFICIENCY sprints from zero to 100 km/h in impressive 5.0 seconds.

Top speed is 250 km/h (electronically limited). The increase in output and torque despite the reduced displacement is mainly due to the use of two turbochargers – one for each bank of cylinders.

These force the intake air into the eight combustion chambers at a pressure of up to 0.9. The turbochargers are configured to provide a high torque at low engine speeds, and an outstanding 600 newton metres are already available between 1600 and 4750 rpm.

The S 600, with its 380 kW (517 hp) 12-cylinder biturbo engine remains the top-of-the-line model: it accelerates the luxury saloon from a standstill to 100 km/h in impressive 4.6 seconds, and now also complies with the Euro 5 emission standard.

More efficiency thanks to demand-controlled ancillary units

In order to improve efficiency, Mercedes-Benz developers have also reduced the power consumption of the ancillary units for the new petrol and diesel engines. One of these is a newly developed, controlled oil pump.

This operates at two pressure levels. At low engine speeds and loads the pump runs at a low pressure. The high-pressure stage is activated at the upper load and engine speed levels.

Thanks to this innovative control concept, the lubrication and cooling points of the engine can be supplied with significantly lower drive energy than would be possible with an uncontrolled pump. In this way, the developers have particularly managed to lower fuel consumption in driving modes requiring less power, for example in urban traffic.

Another special feature is the switchable water pump. To enable faster engine warm-up, the pump is not activated until the optimum operating temperature is reached. This also contributes to the reduction in fuel consumption.

In the S 350 BlueEFFICIENCY and S 500 BlueEFFICIENCY, there is also intelligent generator management with braking energy recuperation.

Designed for maximum efficiency: the new 7G-TRONIC PLUS

All four new engines are combined with the new 7G-TRONIC PLUS 7-speed automatic transmission, which brings a further reduction in torque converter slip and optimised efficiency.

A central role is played by the new torsion damper, which eliminates torsional eccentricities and vibrations in the transmission.

The lower the rpm and the lower the number of cylinders, the more severe these can be. This results in a conflict of aims between comfort and fuel-efficient operation. Mercedes-Benz developers resolved this by using a so-called twin-turbine damper, which is also fitted with a centrifugal pendulum.

Depending on the rpm, this moves the centre of mass and allows comfortable operation even in the most economical operating range.

The optimised damping allows a marked reduction in the slip of the torque converter lockup clutch even under low loads. In the fuel-efficient ECO transmission mode, this has enabled engine speeds to be lowered without compromising signature S-Class comfort.

In addition, the optimised damping of rotational irregularities and vibrations in the transmission allows an even faster response to driver commands via the accelerator pedal.

The S 350 BlueTEC is already in the showrooms of Mercedes-Benz own-retail outlets and dealerships. The S-Class with the new BlueDIRECT petrol engines and the S 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY can be ordered with immediate effect.
