Other leading-edge technologies include the nine-speed automatic transmission 9G-TRONIC, powerful new engines, intelligently networked driver assistance and safety systems, as well as an advanced multimedia system with internet access.

In terms of performance, the AMG versions – the CLS 63 AMG Coupé and Shooting Brake – take pole position with an output of up to 430 kW (585 hp).

All models come with the many new online services offered by “Mercedes connect me”.

Mercedes-Benz CLS-Klasse Facelift (BR 218) 2014

When Mercedes-Benz launched the CLS ten years ago it established the four‑door coupé segment, thus underlining the brand’s leadership role in automotive design.

For the first time, here was a vehicle combining the elegance and dynamism of a coupé with the comfort and functionality of a saloon.

What is more, the CLS was the first vehicle to be available with dynamic LED High Performance headlamps, making it iconic in terms of its lighting system.

Mercedes-Benz CLS-Klasse Facelift (BR 218) 2014

In 2012 Mercedes-Benz continued this success by introducing the CLS Shooting Brake. This sporty five-door vehicle once again demonstrated the premium brand’s creative design credentials.

Given the sports car’s exceptional form with five seats and a large tailgate, the attractive CLS Shooting Brake is ideal for active people who like to travel in style but don’t follow the mainstream or want to miss out on either sportiness or load space.

Mercedes-Benz CLS-Klasse Facelift (BR 218) 2014

As such, the Shooting Brake is a further highlight in the long line of innovative luxury vehicles from Mercedes-Benz.

Due to their immense charisma both the CLS Coupé and the CLS Shooting Brake have established themselves as style icons, and continue to stand out as exceptional in their segment.

Prof Dr Thomas Weber, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development: “We’ve produced iconic designs on wheels in the shape of the CLS Coupé and the CLS Shooting Brake.

The exciting lines of the most recent versions once again set the pulse racing.

With new, high-tech additions such as innovative MULTIBEAM LED headlamps (which start a new chapter in lighting design), nine-speed automatic transmission and advanced multimedia system, both models also define a new technological leadership position.”

Mercedes-Benz CLS-Klasse Facelift (C 218) 2014

The CLS-Class’s exciting design and thrilling proportions were subtly adapted to these high-tech demands. As before, it has a long bonnet, a slim window line with frameless side windows and a roof with a dynamic rearward slope.

With the unique, low roof flowing back to its rear end, the five-door CLS Shooting Brake provides up to 1550 litres of load space for luggage or sports and leisure equipment.

Mercedes-Benz CLS-Klasse Facelift (C 218) 2014

All in all, the designs of the latest-generation CLS Coupé and CLS Shooting Brake are more dynamic than ever. How so?

Examples include an expressive new diamond radiator grille, a pronounced front bumper with large air intakes, MULTIBEAM LED headlamps and new, darkened rear tail lights with multi-level functionality.

Mercedes-Benz CLS-Klasse Facelift (C 218) 2014

Taking the lighting system into a new dimension

Both models are already equipped with LED High Performance headlamps as standard. Alternatively, both vehicle models are optionally available with new MULTIBEAM LED headlamps as designed and developed by Mercedes-Benz.

Mercedes-Benz CLS-Klasse Facelift (C 218) 2014

This innovation sees Mercedes-Benz starting a new chapter in lighting design.

Since MULTIBEAM LED technology combines the best of today’s lighting technologies and is able to adjust the light distribution very quickly and automatically to virtually any road and traffic conditions, it always ensures thus far unrivalled broad and bright illumination of the road surface and edge of the carriageway for high performance and precision without dazzling other car drivers.

Mercedes-Benz CLS-Klasse Facelift (C 218) 2014

The camera-based Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus system supplies the information required for illumination.

If it detects oncoming traffic or vehicles in front with their lights on, each of the 24 individual, high-performance LEDs in a matrix light source is controlled electronically so that various areas of the road surface can be masked out, depending on the situation.

Mercedes-Benz CLS-Klasse Facelift (C 218) 2014

Combining the matrix light source with proven LED Intelligent Light System technology, the headlamp control system improves on the precision of today’s light sources and sets a gap with a minimal width for the main beam.

In this way, other car drivers are not dazzled but drivers of the CLS Coupé and CLS Shooting Brake always benefit from the best possible – in other words brightest – illumination of the road and carriageway edges.

These anti-dazzle, main-beam headlamps can be kept on permanently. New MULTIBEAM LED headlamps therefore offer a new level of safety, which benefits other road users too.

In addition to the camera on the windscreen, this new lighting system uses four control units per vehicle, which calculate the ideal light pattern 100 times per second and control all 24 high-performance LEDs in each precision LED module quickly and individually.

Each LED is dimmable in 255 stages. New MULTIBEAM LED headlamps provide exceptionally fast and precise, anti-dazzle continuous main beam and light up the road surface and its edges much more brightly in many situations.

Optimum vision on bends and roundabouts

As well as the high-performance, precision LED module, each MULTIBEAM LED headlamp contains a module for the low-beam headlamp, which can be swivelled up to 12 degrees to the outside for an active light function with special features that have never been achieved before.

The latter is likewise camera-controlled. For example, an anticipatory function means that the active light function starts to swivel before the driver has even turned.

The bend is therefore illuminated effectively as soon as possible. This active light function will also swivel back to the straight-on position before the corner ends, allowing the driver to identify dangers earlier when entering and exiting bends.

The anticipatory control allows an additional range of between 30 and 60 metres, depending on the traffic situation. Another unique feature is used at roundabouts: before entering onto a roundabout, the cornering light function is activated to the left and right to ensure maximum visibility on all sides at an early stage.

For this purpose the navigation system supplies the positions of roundabouts on the route to the headlamps.

Mercedes-Benz CLS-Klasse Facelift (C 218) 2014

A friendly greeting: “welcome home” function

One charming feature of the new MULTIBEAM LED headlamps is that, in addition to providing daytime running lamps, side lights and turn signal lamps via multifunctional fibre-optic cable, they also welcome the driver by casting a pleasant blue light when the vehicle is unlocked.

 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Klasse Facelift (C 218) 2014

Sporty interior featuring modern luxury

Ample space; simple, sporty elegance; hand-crafted perfection, and premium materials are hallmarks of the CLS family’s stylish interior. The new generation ramps up this impression by placing greater emphasis on sportiness, exclusivity and functionality.

A new, free-standing colour display in the head unit with a 20.3 cm screen diagonal (8″) will help to define the dashboard’s contemporary styling.

Also new are the redesigned three-spoke sports steering wheel and many refined details, which contribute to the interior’s high quality look and feel.

The central control panel in the centre console now has four buttons rather than just two previously, thus speeding up operations in many cases.

With five attractive interior colours, six types of trim and different qualities of leather to choose from, including Leather PASSION Exclusive, the possibilities for individualisation are vast.

Mercedes-Benz CLS-Klasse Facelift (C 218) 2014

Fulfilling your wish list

The new AMG Line Plus supplements the existing Exterior Sports package and AMG Line design and equipment lines and, as the expression of exclusive sportiness and dynamism, increases the potential for individualisation.

By the end of the year a special Night package is set to extend the selection further. New designo interior packages are also available.

Efficient, sporty engines

Thrilling dynamism and exemplary efficiency are the strong points of the five engines available for the next-generation CLS-Class. All are compliant with the Euro 6 standard.

New to the class is the CLS 220 BlueTEC with a four-cylinder diesel engine featuring fourth-generation common rail direct injection, two-stage turbocharging and BlueTEC technology. It generates 125 kW (170 hp) with maximum torque of 400 Nm.

The four-cylinder diesel engine in the CLS 250 BlueTEC, meanwhile, has 150 kW (204 hp) and torque of 500 Nm available on demand. Surpassing these figures, the V6 diesel engine in the CLS 350 BlueTEC delivers 190 kW (258 hp) and 620 Nm of torque.

Equally new is the V6 petrol engine with exhaust gas turbocharging in the CLS 400. Endowed with a biturbo drive system, it has a 3.5-litre displacement.

Thanks to its high output potential and extremely high torque at low engine speeds, this engine sets new benchmarks in its segment. Compared to its predecessor, which had a naturally aspirated engine, output is 20 kW more at 245 kW (333 hp).

Mercedes-Benz CLS-Klasse Facelift (X 218) 2014

Its torque increases by 110 Nm to 480 Nm and is available in the wide engine speed range from 1200 to 4000 rpm. The CLS 500 hits its power peak at 300 kW (408 hp) and up to 600 Nm of torque.

In future, four models (rather than the previous two) will be offered with permanent all-wheel drive. The newcomers are the CLS 250 BlueTEC 4MATIC and the CLS 400 4MATIC.

Maximum performance and efficiency: the AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine 410 kW (557 hp) to 430 kW (585 hp) and 720 to 800 Nm – the AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine ranks among the world’s most efficient series-production eight-cylinder engines when it comes to peak output, torque and fuel consumption.

Mercedes-Benz CLS-Klasse Facelift (X 218) 2014

The CLS 63 AMG with 410 kW (557 hp) and rear-wheel drive consumes 9.9 litres per 100 kilometres (NEDC combined; 231 grams CO2 per kilometre).

The variant with 410 kW and performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive and the S-Model with 430 kW (585 hp) and all-wheel drive come in only slightly above at 10.4 to 10.6 litres per 100 km (243 grams to 248 grams CO2/km). All CLS 63 AMG models already meet the second stage of the EU6 emissions standard.

Mercedes-Benz CLS-Klasse Facelift (X 218) 2014

New automatic transmission with nine gears

Other leading-edge technology includes the world’s first nine-speed automatic transmission with hydrodynamic torque converter in the premium segment: 9G-TRONIC is deployed in the CLS 220 BlueTEC, CLS 250 BlueTEC, CLS 350 BlueTEC and CLS 500.

This innovation builds on the strengths of 7G-TRONIC PLUS, which continues to set standards in terms of efficiency, comfort and dynamism.

In future, a completely new multimedia generation will offer intuitive operation in the CLS Coupé and CLS Shooting Brake, featuring elaborate animations and visual effects which present all functions in a clear and attractive manner.

A choice of infotainment system (Audio 20 CD or optional COMAND Online) is available in conjunction with the new, free-standing display in the head unit with a 20.3 cm screen diagonal (8″).

Both enable the internet to be surfed without restrictions when the vehicle is stationary. A Bluetooth®-capable mobile phone with data option is all it takes. Equally new is a now standard and integral Media Interface for connecting an iPod® or iPhone®.

Mercedes-Benz CLS-Klasse Facelift (X 218) 2014

Mercedes-Benz Apps such as Weather, GoogleTM Local Search with StreetView and Panoramio, destination/route download and Facebook can be used while on the move in conjunction with COMAND Online.

Audio and video playback is possible from various sources, for example via Bluetooth®, from an Apple iPod® or iPhone®, from an SD card, USB stick or CD/DVD.

COMAND Online additionally comes with the LINGUATRONIC voice-operated control system; digital TV/radio reception is a further option.

 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Klasse Facelift (C 218) 2014

Modern-style navigation

In the version with pre-installation the basic Audio 20 CD system can be supplemented with the user-friendly Garmin® MAP PILOT navigation system.

Its merits include 3D views with exact representation of streets and buildings, and photo-realistic Cross-Traffic and Lane Assistants.

The navigation software and map data are stored on an SD card, which is simply inserted into the dedicated slot of the Audio 20 CD with pre-installation for the Garmin® MAP PILOT.

Mercedes-Benz CLS-Klasse Facelift (C 218) 2014

The fast 3D hard-disc navigation of COMAND Online with topographical map display, photo-realistic 3D buildings and 3D map rotations, as well as display of NASA satellite images, makes for a sensory experience.

System features include an animated compass and Google Maps displayed on the head unit.

The navigation system is also able to provide real-time information about the situation on the roads when COMAND Online receives traffic data via the internet by means of the Live Traffic Information service.

Mercedes connect me – new online link to your car

In Europe, the next-generation CLS-Class launches with a new package of services known as “Mercedes connect me”.

Mercedes-Benz emergency call and an accident, maintenance and breakdown management solution, among other services, are made available via a standard COM module with its own SIM card integrated into the vehicle.

Via “connect.mercedes.me” customers are able to connect with their vehicle anytime and anywhere using the internet to find out how full the tank is, for example.

For individuals with style

The next-generation CLS-Class delivers technical innovation along with a subtly modified design and upgraded interior.

The designs of the latest-generation CLS Coupé and CLS Shooting Brake are more dynamic than ever. How so? Examples include an expressive diamond radiator grille and a pronounced, redesigned front bumper.

Both models are already equipped with LED High Performanceheadlamps as standard. Alternatively, both vehicle models are optionally available with new MULTIBEAM LED headlamps as designed and developed by Mercedes-Benz.

These react fast with precision and adjust the light distribution automatically to any situation. This innovative engineering offers some unique advantages.

For example, at the speed of a thought it ensures that the driver is driving on roads that are optimally lit at night in all road and traffic conditions and that other road users with their lights on are not dazzled, even though the main beam remains on.

Mercedes-Benz CLS-Klasse Facelift (C 218) 2014

Bends are illuminated before the driver turns the steering wheel and, on the approach to roundabouts, the technology lights up areas that other headlamp systems leave in the dark.

The headlamp light provided is pleasant and very bright, making it easier for the driver to orientate themselves and contributing significantly to safe driving at night.

Already of high quality, the interior has been enhanced further. The highlight is a free-standing 20.3 cm (8″) display, which will help to define the dashboard’s contemporary styling.

Also new are the redesigned three-spoke sports steering wheel and many refined details, which contribute to the interior’s high quality look and feel. The central control panel in the centre console now has four buttons rather than just two previously, thus speeding up operations in many cases.

There is a choice of five powerful and efficient engines for the future CLS Coupé and CLS Shooting Brake. All are compliant with the Euro 6 standard.

New to the class is the CLS 220 BlueTEC with a four-cylinder diesel engine featuring fourth-generation common rail direct injection, two-stage turbocharging and BlueTEC technology.

It generates 125 kW (170 hp) and delivers maximum torque of 400 Nm. Equally new is the V6 petrol engine with exhaust gas turbocharging and stratified operation in the CLS 400.

In future, four models (rather than the previous two) will be offered with permanent all-wheel drive. The newcomers are the CLS 250 BlueTEC 4MATIC and the CLS 400 4MATIC.

With nine forward gears 9G-TRONIC lowers fuel consumption whilst simultaneously boosting ease of shifting and agility.

MULTIBEAM LED headlamps

The future of light

In the next-generation CLS-Class Mercedes-Benz takes the lighting system into a new dimension. The unique, new MULTIBEAM LED headlamps combine the best lighting technologies.

They are exceptionally bright and automatically illuminate the road surface with a previously unsurpassed, precision-controlled distribution of light – without dazzling others.

Also unique are the anticipatory, camera-based active light function and the cornering light function with added, navigation-assisted functionality for roundabouts.

Mercedes-Benz CLS-Klasse Facelift (C 218) 2014

The CLS was the first road car in the world with dynamic LED High Performance headlamps including all the functionality of the Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Light System – initially as an optional extra.

In future the CLS Coupé and CLS Shooting Brake will be equipped with advanced LED High Performance light systems as standard.

Mercedes-Benz CLS-Klasse Facelift (X 218) 2014

As a new item of optional equipment, MULTIBEAM LED headlamps are available with the Intelligent Light System. On the next generation of the two iconic designs this sees Mercedes-Benz starting a new chapter in lighting design.

New MULTIBEAM LED headlamps come with a number of outstanding, innovative lighting features to extend the Intelligent Light System’s previous functionality (adaptive Highbeam Assist, country mode, motorway mode, fog lamps, active light function, LED daytime running lamps):

  • Anti-dazzle, high-performance main beams, which react faster and more precisely
  • Anticipatory, camera-based active light function
  • Navigation-assisted light function for roundabouts

Mercedes-Benz CLS-Klasse Facelift (X 218) 2014

MULTIBEAM LED headlamps are all-LED and combine the merits of advanced lighting technologies to form uncompromising MULTIBEAM LED technology.

They are able to adjust the light distribution more precisely and faster than ever before to virtually any road or traffic situation, ensuring broad and bright illumination of the road surface and edge of the carriageway without dazzling other car drivers.

They therefore offer a new level of safety which benefits other road users too.

Mercedes-Benz CLS-Klasse Facelift (X 218) 2014

See far, never dazzle

The crucial element is the new anti-dazzle main beam. The purposefully further advanced camera-based Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus system from the S-, E- and C-Class creates the necessary prerequisites.

Using the camera positioned behind the front windscreen it detects oncoming traffic or vehicles in front, and mechanically masks them out in the light cone of the main beam so that the drivers are not dazzled.

Consequently, the main-beam headlamps can be left on at all times, to use their full range without irritating or even endangering other road users.

The new MULTIBEAM LED headlamps also offer this partial main-beam control to illuminate the road surface according to the situation, but go further in an important step.

They use a very fast responding and high performing precision LED module as a matrix light source, which features 24 individual, high-performance LED chips.

Eachof these LED chips can be actuated electronicalMercedes-Benz CLS-Klasse Facelift (X 218) 2014ly and independently of the others. “Gridding” the light in this way allows the light distribution from the right and left headlamps to be controlled entirely separately and adapted to the traffic conditions with a high level of dynamism.

This enables the individual areas of the road surface to be illuminated in a very specific manner.

Mercedes-Benz CLS-Klasse Facelift (X 218) 2014

Combining the matrix light source with proven mechanical LED Intelligent Light System technology means the headlamp control technology not only improves on the precision of today’s light sources and sets a gap with a minimal width for the main beam, but it also generates a new dimension in light output in partial high-beam operation.

Mercedes-Benz CLS-Klasse Facelift (X 218) 2014

Compared with the systems on the market today, the MULTIBEAM LED headlamps have up to 2.5 times the partial high-beam light output.

This increase is made possible by the sophisticated control electronics in conjunction with the new matrix light source of the precision LED module.

Mercedes-Benz CLS-Klasse Facelift (X 218) 2014

Because the precision module in the MULTIBEAM LED headlamps adjusts the light distribution extremely quickly to the situation in a very accurate way, other vehicles are reliably masked out of the light cone – even truck drivers positioned high above the road – whilst the driver of the CLS Coupé or CLS Shooting Brake continues to benefit from the best possible, i.e. brightest, illumination of the road and carriageway edges.

Mercedes-Benz CLS-Klasse Facelift (X 218) 2014

A camera on the windscreen supplies the system with the information it needs about the constantly changing traffic situation and is also used by other assistance functions.

Four control units per vehicle calculate the ideal light pattern 100 times per second and activate all 24 high-performance LEDs in each precision LED module individually. Each LED is dimmable in 255 stages.

Mercedes-Benz CLS-Klasse Facelift (X 218) 2014

The additional light output of the technology in the MULTIBEAM LED headlamps is not only used to increase the performance in partial high-beam operation, but also for main-beam operation.

Mercedes-Benz CLS-Klasse Facelift (X 218) 2014

Even though the latter is activated significantly less due to traffic density, the range of the main beams was increased by about 20% to about 485 m.

Mercedes-Benz CLS-Klasse Facelift (X 218) 2014

Despite tremendous capacity, the precision main-beam module here just about fits into the palm of your hand. Each of the 24 high-performance LED chips is no bigger than the cross-section of a grain of rice.

These 24 high-performance LEDs perform all the functions of the main beam, Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus and preventative motorway mode, which even minimises glare for oncoming trucks thanks to the optimised light pattern.

Mercedes-Benz CLS-Klasse Facelift (X 218) 2014

Active light function illuminates bends early on

In addition to the high-performance, precision LED module, each MULTIBEAM LED headlamp houses another module for the low-beam headlamp.

This has four LEDs and three low-beam reflectors with a total of eight LEDs to create a nice carpet of light in front of the car.

The low-beam module also acts as a bright, long-range light in motorway mode and as an enhanced fog light with optimised light distribution. It can even be adjusted for countries with left and right hand traffic (tourist mode).

Mercedes-Benz CLS-Klasse Facelift (X 218) 2014

This low-beam lamp module can be swivelled up to 12 degrees to the outside. It therefore also serves as an active light function.

For example, a camera-based, anticipatory function means that the active light function starts to swivel before the driver has even turned.

The bend is therefore illuminated effectively as soon as possible. This active light function will also swivel back to the straight-on position before the corner ends, allowing the driver to identify dangers earlier when entering and exiting bends.

Mercedes-Benz CLS-Klasse Facelift (X 218) 2014

To ascertain whether the vehicle is approaching a bend, this anticipatory active light function uses the same camera as Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus and other assistance systems.

The anticipatory control allows an additional range of between 30 and 60 m, depending on the driving situation.

Mercedes-Benz CLS-Klasse Facelift (X 218) 2014

No dark zone on roundabouts

By contrast, the new and to date unique light function for roundabouts is navigation-based. It activates the cornering light function to the left and right before entering the roundabout to ensure maximum visibility at an early stage.

Mercedes-Benz CLS-Klasse Facelift (X 218) 2014

A friendly greeting: “welcome home” function

One other charming feature of the new MULTIBEAM LED headlamps is that, in addition to providing daytime running lamps, side lights and turn signal lamps via multifunctional fibre-optic cable (which like an eyebrow adds a flourish to the top of the headlamps in signature Mercedes style), they also have an exciting “welcome home” function.

When unlocked the vehicle greets the driver by casting a pleasant blue light from this fibre-optic cable. This means one can see if a CLS Coupé or CLS Shooting Brake is equipped with this special lamp module even in the dark.

Mercedes-Benz CLS-Klasse Facelift (X 218) 2014

Advantage: LED

The LED technology used for MULTIBEAM LED as well as standard LED High Performance headlamps offers many advantages: the light from the bright LED headlamps is closer to daylight and therefore in line with normal human perception patterns.

Studies have shown that the closer the colour of artificial light is to daylight, the less the strain on the eyes. With a colour temperature of 5500 kelvin, LED light is closer to daylight (6500 K) than xenon light (4200 K).

Mercedes-Benz CLS-Klasse Facelift (X 218) 2014

The powerful single-chip LED diodes of the MULTIBEAM LED headlamps and their high lumen/watt output also contribute to increased efficiency on the CLS Coupé and CLS Shooting Brake and, with an average useful life of about 10,000 hours, also last around five times longer than a xenon lamp.

Mercedes-Benz CLS-Klasse Facelift (X 218) 2014

Design

Iconic status

The CLS Coupé’s exciting design and thrilling proportions were modified. As before, it has a long bonnet, a slim window line with frameless side windows and a roof with a dynamic rearward slope.

The CLS Shooting Brake, too, has exciting proportions mainly derived from the CLS Coupé. With its sportily low roof flowing back to the rear end and five doors, the unmistakably coupé-like vehicle provides up to 1550 litres of load space for luggage or sports and leisure equipment.

Mercedes-Benz CLS-Klasse Facelift (X 218) 2014

Thanks to striking LED High Performance headlamps with integral daytime running lamps or the optional new MULTIBEAM LED headlamps, the next-generation CLS Coupé and CLS Shooting Brake look even more dynamic.

The dominant, new diamond radiator grille in black with one louvre is particularly eye-catching. With the optional AMG Line on the CLS 500 the diamond radiator grille has chrome pins.

Equally new is the front bumper with large, pronounced air intakes, which visually emphasis the vehicles’ sporty character.

With a redesigned AMG front and AMG rear apron and AMG side sill panels, the AMG Line creates an even more powerful impression.

Mercedes-Benz CLS-Klasse Facelift (X 218) 2014

To the rear, both vehicle variants feature new, darkened LED tail lamps with adaptive light intensity. Mercedes-Benz also keeps other road users in mind here by varying the intensity of the indicator and brake lamps depending on the light conditions and speed so that they are not dazzled.

Mercedes-Benz CLS-Klasse Facelift (C 218) 2014

The iconic designs’ new look includes a revised and extended range of stylish alloy wheels (43.2 cm to 48.3 cm, which is 17 to 19 inches), as well as two new metallic paint colours: citrine brown and magnetite black.

Interior

See, touch, enjoy – experience quality

Ample space; simple, sporty elegance; hand-crafted perfection, and premium materials are hallmarks of the CLS family’s stylish interior.

The new generation ramps up this impression by placing greater emphasis on sportiness, exclusivity and functionality.

A new, free-standing colour display in the head unit with a 20.3 cm screen diagonal (8″) plays a part in the contemporary styling.

Also complementing the high-quality instrument cluster are three round dials with white backgrounds and a central 10.9 cm multifunction TFT display for full-colour, three-dimensional viewing.

Mercedes-Benz CLS-Klasse Facelift (C 218) 2014

There is also a new generation of steering wheel: the three-spoke multifunction steering wheel with perforated grip area comes in black or espresso brown nappa leather as standard and there are twelve ergonomic controls for easy operation of myriad functions.

Opting for the AMG Line provides customers with the multifunction sports steering wheel with flattened bottom section. DIRECT SELECT steering wheel gearshift paddles are standard for the CLS Coupé and the CLS Shooting Brake.

In the vehicle interior, both the CLS Coupé and Shooting Brake traditionally provide plenty of scope for individualisation.

There are five attractive interior colours, six types of trim and different qualities of leather to choose from, including Leather PASSION Exclusive.

The new interior colour combinations are crystal grey/black, silk beige/espresso brown and saddle brown/black.

Other new options enhancing the scope for individualisation are high-gloss brown “linestructure” lime wood trim and two stylish designo interior concepts featuring leather with high-quality, diamond-pattern quilting and a choice of colours: classic red/black or saddle brown/silk beige.

Mercedes-Benz CLS-Klasse Facelift (C 218) 2014

The careful treatment of various interior elements reveals even greater attention to detail. For example, the seat adjustment controls in the front doors have a genuine metal surface and are electroplated in silver shadow.

The existing central control panel with two buttons now has four, which are integrated directly into the centre console trim. These four buttons combined with a controller enable individually stored functions (favourites) to be accessed quickly via the head unit.

CLS 63 AMG, AMG RIDE CONTROL Sportfahrwerk

Onboard the CLS Coupé and CLS Shooting Brake a large element of wood trim on the dashboard that continues onto the doors sets the future tone.

There are also high-quality seams on the cockpit and seats, an analogue clock with Mercedes star in the centre console between the vent openings, and ambience lighting in three colour shades (neutral, solar, polar).

On the CLS Shooting Brake it is the large luggage compartment that really makes a difference. It is lined with a high-quality carpet, whilst optional aluminium designer cargo rails create an even more exclusive look.

Without parallel in the automotive industry is the designo wood luggage compartment floor, which highlights the interior’s hand-finished character and lends the luggage compartment the elegance of a wooden deck on board a yacht.

New choice of engines

Thrilling dynamism and exemplary efficiency are the strong points of the engines for the next-generation CLS Coupé and CLS Shooting Brake.

All five of the engines available for the two iconic designs feature state-of-the-art technology. All are thus compliant with the Euro 6 standard.

The BlueTEC diesel engines for the CLS-Class are environmentally friendly but powerful. Developed by Mercedes-Benz, BlueTEC is a modular concept that effectively reduces emission levels from diesel vehicles.

The CLS-Class BlueTEC models are equipped with an oxidising catalytic converter and particulate filter, as well as an exceptionally durable NOx storage-type catalytic converter.

These are combined with an additional SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) converter. SCR exhaust gas aftertreatment converts nitrogen oxides into harmless nitrogen and water vapour, thereby keeping untreated emissions to a minimum.

14C635_01

The new entry-level model is the four-cylinder diesel engine in the CLS 220 BlueTEC featuring fourth-generation common rail direct injection, two-stage turbocharging and BlueTEC technology. It generates 125 kW (170 PS) with maximum torque of 400 Nm.

Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes 8.3 seconds (Shooting Brake 8.6 seconds); the top speed is 226 km/h (Shooting Brake 220 km/h) and it consumes 4.6 litres of diesel (Shooting Brake 4.9 litres) over 100 kilometres (NEDC combined).

This corresponds to CO2 emissions of 122 (127) grams per kilometre. The same engine appears in the CLS 250 BlueTEC and CLS 250 BlueTEC 4MATIC, as well as in the equivalent Shooting Brake variants.

In this version it delivers 150 kW (204 hp) and creates 500 Nm of torque to spin the crankshaft.

The most powerful diesel engine within the CLS-Class is the V6 in the CLS 350 BlueTEC and CLS 350 BlueTEC Shooting Brake. It produces 190 kW (258 hp) of power (CLS BlueTEC 4MATIC – 185 kW (252 hp)) and supplies torque of 620 Nm.

Petrol engines set benchmarks

A new six-cylinder petrol engine celebrates its début in both models. Key benefits include turbocharging, stratified charge operation and a 3.5-litre displacement.

Unlike the familiar V6 biturbo with three-litre displacement, the new engine operates in either stratified or homogeneous mode depending on the operating conditions.

It thus continues to deploy what is known as stratified combustion as launched with the 3.5-litre V6 naturally aspirated engine in 2011. With stratified charge operation there is significant excess air.

To this end, the fuel is not injected into the air until the compression phase, after the air has been compressed by the pistons. A precision-controlled electronic multiple injection process ensures that a fuel-air cloud localised in the area of the spark plug forms only at the time of ignition.

The spark plug lights the ignitable fuel/air mixture around it, while only a very lean mixture with a high proportion of excess air is to be found in the remainder of the combustion chamber.

This enables extremely efficient combustion. Gas cycle losses are reduced considerably because adjustment to the operational load takes place largely without the intake air throttle.

Compared to the previous naturally aspirated engine in the CLS 350, the new six-cylinder engine produces 20 kW more output at 245 kW (333 hp).

Its torque increases by 110 Nm to 480 Nm and is available in the wide engine speed range from 1200 to 4000 rpm.

Thanks to its output potential and extremely high torque at lower engine speeds than the three-litre V6 biturbo, the new stratified charge engine provides the ideal conditions for sporty, agile driving pleasure and a high level of refinement combined with high efficiency.

The V8 petrol engine in the CLS-Class hits its power peak at 300 kW (408 hp) and up to 600 Nm of torque.

CLS 63 AMG Coupé and Shooting Brake

More attractive, more dynamic and even sportier

The four-door CLS 63 AMG Coupé and Shooting Brake are now even sportier and more attractive. Visually both AMG high-performance models look more dominant and athletic than before.

The equipment for the CLS 63 AMG, which produces up to 430 kW (585 hp), is now more exclusive and boasts higher quality thanks to the facelift. The AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission now responds even faster.

The new design brings to life the extraordinary technology in the CLS 63 AMG. A total of five model variants are available, all consummately tailored to discerning customers that appreciate unmatched performance.

From zero to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds

Accelerating from zero to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds, the CLS 63 AMG S-Model leaves all the competitors behind. Performance on a par with a sports car and superlative emotive appeal are combined with hallmark Mercedes everyday practicality, space for up to five passengers, and a large, variable luggage compartment.

The S-Models come as standard with performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive; 4MATIC is available as an option for the other variants.

Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH: “The CLS 63 AMG in its Coupé and Shooting Brake guise is now even more dynamic, and the new design makes it more striking.

With a power output of up to 430 kW (585 hp) and AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive, the CLS 63 AMG takes pole position in the driving dynamics stakes.”

Twin blade and A‑Wing as hallmark AMG design features

Twin blade and A‑Wing are the names of the striking, hallmark AMG design features on the front section, which now also make the CLS 63 AMG instantly recognisable.

The “Twin blade” radiator grille in silver chrome comes with characteristic AMG lettering between the louvres. This three-dimensional”A-Wing” air-ducting element spans the entire width of the front apron and displays the stylised “A” that is a hallmark of AMG vehicles.

The “A-Wing” painted in the body colour with silver chrome trim strip provides the framework for the three large intake air apertures – rekindling memories of motorsport. Black flics on the side air intakes optimise the flow of air to the cooling modules.

In combination with the new, futuristic, standard-fit MULTIBEAM LED headlamps, the front section of the CLS 63 AMG symbolises pure dynamism and performance.

The powerful AMG V8 flagship models are also now more visually differentiated from the other CLS models. Viewed from the side, the distinctive, flared wings catch the eye; V8 BITURBO lettering bears testimony to the superior engine output.

The rear section also leaves its lasting mark: side, visual air outlets and the black diffuser insert with pronounced fins lend the CLS 63 AMG a powerful racetrack touch.

The AMG Sport exhaust system with two chromed twin tailpipe trims provides an acoustic and visual highlight. AMG triple-spoke alloy wheelsfill the wheel arches to perfection.

Size 255/35 R 19 tyres on 9.0 x 19 wheels are fitted to the front, while the rear comes with 285/30 R 19 tyres on 10 x 19 wheels.

S-Models with even more striking design

The powerful S-Models feature an even more striking design: features include exclusive 10-spoke alloy wheels, painted in matt titanium grey with high-sheen rim flange.

Other hallmark S-Model distinguishing features include the A-Wing in high-gloss black, side sill panel inserts in silver chrome, red-painted brake callipers and the AMG logo on the boot lid with contrasting black “S”.

Even more individuality ex-factory

Three new packages are now available for the CLS 63 AMG. Customers therefore have even more choice when it comes to fulfilling their personal preferences:

  • AMG Night package (A-Wing on the front apron with trim strip, side sill panel inserts, exterior mirror housings and window frames in high-gloss black, from 12/2014: privacy glazing)
  • AMG Carbon-Fibre package I (A-wing on the front apron, side sill panel inserts and diffuser insert on the rear apron in carbon fibre)
  • AMG Carbon-Fibre package II (exterior mirror housings and AMG spoiler lip on Coupé in carbon fibre)

New lightweight, forged AMG alloy wheels are also available as an option. The wheels in the attractive cross-spoke design and central-locking look are available in titanium grey/high-sheen or matt black with high-sheen rim flange.

Maximum performance and efficiency: the AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine

410 kW (557 hp) to 430 kW (585 hp) and 720 to 800 Nm – the AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine ranks among the world’s most efficient series-production eight-cylinder engines when it comes to peak output, torque and fuel consumption.

AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission responds even faster

The AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission is the ideal partner for the powerful V8 biturbo engine. Equipped with the four drive modes “C” (Controlled Efficiency), “S” (Sport), “S+” (Sport plus) and “M” (Manual), the ECO start/stop function and RACE START, the power transmission offers the ultimate in variability and tailor-made dynamism.

The AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmissionnow offers even faster response times: a manual up- or downshift – initiated by the driver on the steering-wheel gearshift paddle – is completed even more immediately than ever before.

Particularly in the “S+” and “M” shift modes the power transmission now responds much faster. The tangible driving dynamics are thus enhanced further.

This increased immediacy was made possible by optimising the transmission hardware and software. The aluminium shift paddles on the new AMG performance steering wheel can transfer the driver’s manual gearshift instructions even faster than before.

AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive standard on the S-Model

Performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive – standard on the CLS 63 AMG S-Models and as an option for the remaining variants – distributes the engine torque to send 33 percent to the front axle and 67 percent to the rear axle.

The rear-biased power distribution provides for the signature AMG high driving dynamics and superlative driving enjoyment.

The 3-stage ESP® is specially tuned to the permanent all-wheel drive. In “SPORT Handling” mode and with “ESP OFF” the ESP® Dynamic Cornering Assist applies the brakes to selected wheels to promote high agility: while cornering, targeted short braking intervention at the inside rear wheel helps the vehicle to corner with precision.

This prevents irritating understeer when turning into bends.

Mercedes-AMG goes even one step further on the CLS 63 AMG S-Model. In keeping with its “Driving Performance” brand claim, a limited-slip rear differential is fitted on the rear axle.

The result is a further increase in traction that provides even better driving dynamics and more driving pleasure, in particular on the racetrack.

Suspension and braking system for high agility and dynamism

All CLS 63 AMG models come with the AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension with electronically controlled damping system, steel suspension at the front and air spring system at the rear.

Hallmark AMG features including more negative camber on both axles and track widened by 24 millimetres at the front provide more stability at high cornering speeds and better road feel.

The S-Model and the CLS 63 AMG with all-wheel drive are fitted with an optimised 3-link front suspension including axle components made of aluminium.

The driver benefits from both more grip and agility as well as decidedly neutral handling characteristics on fast bends.

The markedly more performance-oriented elastokinematics are exclusive to the S-Model, and offer the driver even better feedback and grip at the critical limits.

The AMG high-performance braking system is perfectly matched to the high power output. The CLS 63 AMG comes with internally ventilated and perforated brake discs with their generous 360-millimetre dimensions front and rear.

An AMG ceramic high-performance composite braking system is exclusively available for the S-Model as an optional feature – recognisable by the even larger 402-millimetre brake discs at the front and the AMG Carbon Ceramic logo on callipers sporting a special paint finish.

Interior: quality taken to new heights

In the interior the facelifted CLS 63 AMG boasts a new AMG performance steering wheel including shift paddles and lower metal insert in silver chrome with AMG lettering.

It visibly underscores the interior’s high quality. Equally new is the free-standing colour display in the head unit with a 20.3 cm screen diagonal (8″), which helps define the dashboard’s contemporary looks.

The large screen is part of the all-new multimedia generation.

As in the past, the CLS 63 AMG S-Models are differentiated from the other variants with striking details: for instance, only the S-Model has grey contrasting topstitching on the AMG sports seats, the door centre panels, the armrests on the doors and the centre console if black interior appointments are specified.

Silver seat belts are also fitted in conjunction with a black interior. The AMG performance steering wheel in black nappa leather with flattened bottom section comes with grip areas in Alcantara® and grey contrasting topstitching. Exclusive, embossed AMG emblems adorn the front head restraints on the AMG sports seats.

The AMG instrument cluster features an “S AMG” logo in the 320-km/h speedometer and red highlights. White illuminated AMG door sill panels and AMG floor mats round off the exclusive appointments.

Transmission

Ready for the future with nine gears

Depending on the model, the CLS Coupé and CLS Shooting Brake have the standard 7-speed automatic transmission 7G-TRONIC PLUS or new 9G-TRONIC, the world’s first nine-speed automatic transmission with hydrodynamic torque converter in the premium segment.

This innovation builds on the strengths of 7G-TRONIC PLUS, which continues to champion efficiency, comfort and dynamism.

With two additional forward gears 9G-TRONIC lowers fuel consumption further whilst simultaneously boosting ease of shifting and agility.

The following models are equipped with new 9G-TRONIC as standard: CLS 220 BlueTEC, CLS 250 BlueTEC, CLS 350 BlueTEC and CLS 500.

The 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission is installed in the CLS 400 and the 4MATIC models.

Among the traits of the latest evolutionary stage of the seven-speed automatic transmission from Mercedes-Benz are the new torque converter with reduced slip, an ECO transmission mode with improved gear spread, as well as an auxiliary oil pump that maintains the operating pressure when the engine is automatically switched off.

What is more, friction-optimised components in conjunction with low-friction oil make it possible to lower the operating pressure. The upsides of this are very smooth gear changes and a dynamic response.

9G-TRONIC from Mercedes-Benz is the world’s first nine-speed automatic transmission in the premium segment. Its broad ratio spread (9.15) for gears one to nine allows an overall reduction in engine speed – a key factor behind the high level of energy efficiency and ride comfort.

Shortened shift and response times ensure optimum immediacy combined with outstanding ease of shifting. In manual mode and S mode in particular, 9G-TRONIC responds immediately and enhances driving pleasure.

This is linked to the transmission’s high efficiency, which is a noticeable advantage in terms of fuel consumption.

The particular ease of shifting of new 9G-TRONIC comes courtesy of a comprehensive package of measures. These include a novel direct control system which enables short, barely perceptible gear changes.

The combination of twin-turbine torsional damper and centrifugal pendulum technology in the torque converter ensures outstanding drive comfort.

Together with the extended gear ratio spread, higher road speeds can be driven at lower engine speed for even greater comfort. In reality this translates into being able to drive at 120 km/h in ninth gear with an engine speed of around only 1350 rpm, for example.

Advanced technology for superior power transmission

Despite two additional gears and a maximum transferable torque of up to 1000 Nm, the transmission requires as little installation space as the 7G-TRONIC and is also lighter in weight.

The two-piece housing design has been retained: the torque converter housing is made of lightweight aluminium, while the transmission housing with weight-optimised plastic oil pan is made of an even lighter magnesium alloy.

Another goal was to implement the nine gears with a minimal number of planetary gear sets and shift elements. Intensive, computer-based system analysis and mock-up made it possible to realise this goal with just four simple planetary gear sets and six shift elements.

Three speed sensors monitor operation and provide the transmission control system with corresponding data for effective shifting. It is possible for several gears to be jumped when accelerating or decelerating, should the driving conditions call for it.

To ensure the reliable, and at the same time energy- efficient, supply of long-lasting and shear-resistant, second-generation synthetic fuel economy engine oil, the new automatic transmission is equipped with two pumps.

The considerably smaller mechanical main pump, featuring an off-axis design, is located next to the main shaft and is chain-driven and fed by a separate electric auxiliary pump.

This design allows the flow of lubricating and cooling oil to be controlled actively on demand, and also means that 9G-TRONIC can benefit from a start/stop system.

Thanks to the world’s first direct control system in a planetary automatic transmission with nine gears, it has also been possible to significantly increase hydraulic efficiency within the transmission.

In addition, the engineers have improved the hydraulic circuit in the torque converter in new 9G-TRONIC and increased its efficiency to up to 92 percent.

This extraordinarily good figure is important for fuel economy because the losses imposed by physics when transferring the engine torque to the transmission’s input shaft are kept to a minimum.

In short: 9G-TRONIC converts a very high proportion of the engine power into tractive power.

One of the most comfort-enhancing and at the same time fuel-saving features is the torsional damper, which compensates even more effectively for eccentricities and vibrations within the transmission.

Moreover, the optimised damping enables slip in the torque converter lock-up clutch to be reduced considerably even at low loads, which likewise contributes to fuel economy.

Variety of modes: Economy, Sport, Manual and “Short-term M”

With three transmission modes, 9G-TRONIC offers a control strategy that is adapted to the relevant traffic situation or the driver’s personal preferences.

In ECO mode upshifts are performed sooner, and the handling is gentler overall to support an economical driving style at lower engine speeds.

In SPORT or MANUAL modes the control strategy shortens the response and shift times, and there is higher revving in the gears to support a dynamic and sporty driving style. Transmission modes are activated with a switch on the centre console.

Like 7G-TRONIC PLUS before it, 9G-TRONIC also has the automatic mode “Short-term M”. This is activated in ECO and SPORT mode if the driver engages the required gear using the shift paddles.

“Short-term M” remains active if there are repeated manual gear shifts or a sporty driving style is maintained with higher linear and lateral acceleration levels.

In contrast to permanently activated MANUAL mode (with AMG Line only), however, “Short-term M” is deactivated after a certain period without higher power requirements, and the transmission reverts to the original mode.

Chassis and suspension

Comfort and agility

For the CLS-Class three chassis and suspension set-ups are offered with different arrangements. They all share excellent sensitivity and ride characteristics for the highest level of ride comfort and safety.

The CLS Coupé comes with steel springs and a DIRECT CONTROL suspension as standard. It is available in two variants:

  • As a comfort suspension with selective damping system which adjusts automatically to the condition of the road surface, for four and six-cylinder engines
  • As a sports suspension with selective damping system and firmer damping characteristics in conjunction with the AMG Line and Exterior Sports package

As standard the CLS Shooting Brake has an air suspension with self-levelling rear suspension. The eight-cylinder-engined CLS-Class comes with a full-support, semi-active AIRMATIC air suspension with continuously variable damping system.

This electronically controlled damping system permits the selection of either sporty or comfort-oriented suspension characteristics and has a level control system. For other CLS-Class models, AIRMATIC is available as an optional extra.

Furthermore the CLS-Class is equipped with an electromechanical Direct-Steer system as standard, which requires no hydraulics.

This enables the use of innovative assistance systems such as Active Parking Assist. The electromechanical Direct-Steer system also ensures more agile handling and high steering comfort.

Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive

Assistance systems for safety and comfort

Making top-class safety available to everyone is the declared aim of Mercedes-Benz. That is why the CLS-Class will be equipped with many new and feature-enhanced assistance systems in future.

COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS is part of the standard equipment. It helps to avoid rear-end collisions – by way of autonomous brake application if necessary.

The basis for the numerous functions of the assistance systems is an extensive sensor system, which can provide the vehicle with a 360-degree view.

Depending on the vehicle’s equipment, for example, a Stereo Multi Purpose Camera (SMPC) may be included behind the windscreen near the interior mirror.

Two camera eyes provide it with a three-dimensional view of the area up to around 50 metres in front of the vehicle, and it is able to monitor the overall situation ahead for a range of up to 500 metres and thus determine the position and movement of objects, especially of vehicles and pedestrians.

Two short-range radar sensors in the front bumper and at the side of the rear bumper respectively (range up to 30 metres), long-range radar (up to 200 metres) including mid-range scan (up to 60 metres) behind the radiator grille and multi-mode radar (up to 80 metres) in the centre of the rear bumper may complete the sensor system.

Mercedes-Benz CLS-Klasse Facelift (C 218) 2014

The data from the camera and radar is compiled in a control unit in order to provide relevant data for a host of assistance systems – a process dubbed “sensor fusion” by safety experts.

Intelligent algorithms analyse this data in order to detect and pinpoint the position of vehicles ahead, crossing, approaching from the rear and even from the front, as well as of pedestrians, within a large field of vision.

In addition, the camera also detects road markings and a variety of traffic signs. The aim is all-round protection not just for occupants of the vehicle itself, but for other road users too.

The CLS-Class is fitted as standard with ATTENTION ASSIST, which can warn the driver of inattentiveness and drowsiness.

On motorways the COMAND Online navigation function offers nearby break options as stopovers, providing the system has been specified in the vehicle.

The ATTENTION ASSIST function offers an adjustable level of sensitivity and can inform drivers in a separate view in the instrument cluster about their level of drowsiness and how long they have been driving since their last break.

Mercedes-Benz CLS-Klasse Facelift (C 218) 2014

COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS: now brakes autonomously when there is a threat of a rear-end collision

Also part of the standard equipment is COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS. The system can provide effective aid in mitigating the severity of rear-end collisions or even in preventing them entirely.

Mercedes-Benz CLS-Klasse Facelift (C 218) 2014

To this end, the radar-based system constantly monitors the area of traffic in front of the vehicle, and can determine the distance and speed of the vehicles in front.

If it falls clearly below the safe following distance, the system issues a visual warning to the driver. If it detects a serious risk of collision, the driver receives an additional audible warning.

At the same time, the system computes the braking power required to still prevent the impact in the ideal case at speeds from as low as 7 km/h.

If the warned driver then depresses the brake pedal firmly, the system is capable of boosting insufficient braking commensurate to the situation.

In so doing it makes the best possible use of the remaining distance in order to leave vehicles following behind space for braking manoeuvres.

Mercedes-Benz CLS-Klasse Facelift (X 218) 2014

If the driver fails to react, new COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS can go one step further and autonomously brake for slower or stopping vehicles.

The system even brakes when stationary vehicles are detected up to a speed of50 km/h, and can prevent rear-end collisions up to 40 km/h depending on the situation.

The PRE-SAFE® system is another standard item. It triggers preventive occupant protection measures when the risk of accident is imminent, including the reversible belt tensioners.

Mercedes-Benz CLS-Klasse Facelift (X 218) 2014

Another optional extra is the Driver Assistance package Plus. This encompasses the following assistance systems:

  • DISTRONIC PLUS with Steering Assist and Stop&Go Pilot – relieves the burden on the driver in keeping a safe following distance, even in stop and go traffic. Steering Assist is new and helps the driver with lateral control of the vehicle, even in gentle bends, and offers a tailback vehicle following function.
  • BAS PLUS with Cross-Traffic Assist – boosts driver braking depending on the situation, if necessary up to full brake application and, for the first time, can also react to crossing traffic and pedestrians.
  • PRE-SAFE® Brake with pedestrian detection – provides autonomous braking in the absence of a driver reaction. In typical urban driving scenarios, it can now prevent collisions with pedestrians or stationary vehicles or reduce their severity.
  • PRE-SAFE® PLUS – detects an impending rear impact, warns the traffic following behind by means of high-frequency flashing of the rear hazard warning lamps, locks the brakes if the vehicle is stationary to reduce forward jolt and thus reduces the strain placed on the occupants and the risk of secondary accidents. PRE-SAFE® is activated immediately prior to the impact.
  • Active Blind Spot Assist – issues a visual and, if the indicator is activated, an audible warning of the presence of a vehicle in the blind spot area, and can prevent a potential side-on collision by actuating the brakes on one side at the last moment.
  • Active Lane Keeping Assist – warns of unintentional lane departures by means of pulsed vibrations of the steering wheel and in the presence of solid lane markings corrects the vehicle’s alignment position with one-sided brake application. It now also intervenes with one-sided brake application if the adjacent lane is occupied by, for example, oncoming traffic, fast overtaking or overtaken vehicles.

Also available as an optional extra:

  • MULTIBEAM LED headlamps with high-performance, precision LED modules adapt to a wide array of road and traffic conditions and adjustthe light distribution precisely and highly dynamically for optimum visibility. There is an integral “coming home” function.
  • Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus (part of optional MULTIBEAM LED) allows the high-beam headlamps to be kept on permanently without dazzling traffic by masking out other vehicles in the beams’ cone of light.
  • Traffic Sign Assist – now recognises no-overtaking zones and the end of these zones in addition to speed limits. Can warn visually and audibly of no-entry signs (wrong-way driving) if the appropriate signs are posted.
  • Active Parking Assist with PARKTRONIC – makes automated parking with active steering and brake actuation possible in both parallel and end-on spaces. Can also help when leaving a parallel parking space if the vehicle was parked using the system.
  • 360° camera (part of the optional Parking package) – makes parking and manoeuvring possible with a 360-degree view. The vehicle and its surroundings can be displayed on the multimedia system display from a bird’s-eye view and other perspectives.

Hard-disc navigation and more with COMAND Online

COMAND Online with its own fast 3D hard-disc navigation, topographical map display, photo-realistic 3D buildings and 3D map rotations as well as display of NASA satellite images makes for a sensory experience.

The system presents its contents interactively and its features include an animated compass and Google Maps displayed on the head unit.

The navigation system is also able to provide real-time information about the situation on the roads when COMAND Online receives traffic data via the internet by means of the Live Traffic Information service.

Unlike the previous data sources TMC and TMCpro, whose data are received by radio, Live Traffic Information uses a fast internet connection and is therefore particularly up-to-date.

The scope of functions also includes lane recommendations, following predefined routes and the calculation of four alternative routes.

New technologies: wide band speech and LTE on the way

The Audio 20 CD system and COMAND Online both come as standard with basic telephony, which connects the mobile phone with the vehicle via a standardised Bluetooth® interface.

With the next generation CLS-Class it is also possible to use new wide band speech technology, commonly referred to as HD Voice, via Bluetooth® on the latest mobile phones.

In good conditions this can be transmitted at a frequency range of 50 to 7000 Hertz, whereas the standard up to now has been only a frequency range of 200 to 3400 Hertz (the human speech spectrum ranges from 50 to around 12,000 Hertz).

By making the most of twice the frequency spectrum telephone calls are considerably easier to understand, especially in environments like a vehicle where background noise is prevalent.

Mercedes-Benz CLS-Klasse Facelift (BR 218) 2014

Mercedes-Benz is also introducing the modern LTE (Long Term Evolution) mobile communications standard in the next-generation CLS-Class in conjunction with optional convenience telephony.

This fourth-generation wireless communication standard makes it possible for compatible smartphones and tablets to attain a download speed of up to 300 megabits per second and an upload speed of up to 75 megabits per second, regardless of location, with wireless broadband internet access.

With low delay times of less than 5 ms, MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service), video chat, HD (High Definition) radio, mobile TV, HD TV content, DVB and normal telephone calls are all possible. LTE is future-proof because it uses internet protocol (IP) technology.

Digital Owner’s Manual with intuitive search function

The ever increasing scope of in particular the vehicle electronics necessitates voluminous operating instructions.

To make their use easier, Mercedes-Benz is equipping the CLS-Class for the first time with a Digital Owner’s Manual – complemented by a printed version for the most important problem solutions such as in the case of a breakdown.

Mercedes-Benz CLS-Klasse Facelift (BR 218) 2014

The benefits of the Digital Owner’s Manual are that it can be called up on the new, free-standing 20.3 cm display and is thus always close at hand for the driver.

A text search function or a virtual representation of the vehicle help find required information quickly and easily. Let’s not forget: instead of 450 or more pages, now only about 100 printed pages have to be enclosed. This saves about half a kilogram in weight.

Mercedes connect me

In online contact with the car

In Europe, the next-generation CLS-Class comes with a package of services known as “Mercedes connect me”.

Under the umbrella brand “Mercedes me” the Stuttgart-based premium automotive manufacturer bundles all existing and future service offerings so they are easily accessible and available at all times on a digital internet platform.

The line-up can be accessed via a personalised Mercedes ID on the www.mercedes.me website.

“Mercedes me” also includes new “Mercedes connect me” services. Mercedes connect me” services can be used via a COM module integrated into the vehicle.

The available services include accident, maintenance and breakdown management, among others. Via “connect.mercedes.me” customers are able to connect with their vehicle anytime and anywhere to find out how full the tank is, for example.

The selected services can be activated as desired with the exception of the Mercedes-Benz emergency call system which is enabled automatically.

The services in detail:

Mercedes-Benz emergency call system

  • In an accident this service automatically connects the occupants with the Mercedes-Benz Emergency Call Centre and sends the position and condition of the vehicle to the rescue operations centre. A rescue vehicle can then be dispatched immediately. The system works automatically but can also be triggered manually.

Mercedes-Benz CLS-Klasse Facelift (BR 218) 2014

“Mercedes connect me” basic services comprise:

  • Accident management – after the Mercedes-Benz emergency call the system connects to the Customer Assistance Centre to make it possible to request additional optional aid in dealing with the accident, e.g. a tow truck.
  • Breakdown management – provides technical assistance in the event of a breakdown. To this end the vehicle position and condition of the vehicle are transmitted to the Customer Assistance Centre, which informs Mercedes-Benz Service 24h. This allows Mercedes-Benz Service 24h to provide fast and optimal help.
  • Maintenance management – the vehicle detects and reports pending maintenance need and sends the necessary data to the service outlet as the basis for preparing a service quote.
  • Telediagnosis – the vehicle detects the necessary replacement of diagnostics-capable wear parts and reports this to the dealer. The dealer contacts the customer to schedule a workshop appointment. Previously transmitted data enables the workshop to provide optimal assistance.

The optional Remote Online services (can also be used with a smartphone via www.connect.mercedes.me) comprise:

  • Vehicle position – allows the vehicle position to be determined, for example, if the vehicle was parked in an unfamiliar city. This makes it possible to conveniently find the vehicle with the help of a smartphone within a range of 1.5 kilometres.
  • Vehicle position finding – enables the latest position of a moving vehicle to be pinpointed via GPS. The driver has a display in the vehicle and can deactivate the service at any time with a toll-free call to the Customer Assistance Centre.
  • Geographic vehicle monitoring – displays where the vehicle is in an area previously defined on the map and informs the customer if the car leaves or enters this area. Just as in the case of vehicle position finding, the driver can deactivate the service at any time. (Expected availability from late 2014).
  • Remote door locking and unlocking – allows locking or closing the vehicle doors remotely, for example, if the driver forgot to lock the vehicle. (Expected availability from late 2014).
  • Remote access of vehicle status – vehicle data such as fuel gauge, state of charge, range and more can be accessed from home or while on the road.
