The GLE models from Mercedes-AMG
Driving Performance for any terrain
Mercedes-AMG continues to systematically pursue its performance SUV strategy: the sports car and performance brand within Mercedes-Benz makes dynamism and emotion tangible.
Five new GLE models with powerful V6 and V8 biturbo engines are now being launched. Mercedes-AMG established the high-performance SUV segment in 1999 with the ML 55 AMG, progressively expanding it in recent years.
Driving Performance – the AMG brand claim – and typical character traits can now be experienced by an even broader target group with five new GLE models.
Nine different SUVs bear the striking AMG logo at present: the vehicles range from the GLA 45 with a four-cylinder turbo engine to the G 65 with a V12 biturbo engine, the world’s most powerful production SUV.
This means that Mercedes-AMG offers a wider choice of high-performance SUVs than any other automotive manufacturer in the world.

Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 AMG 4MATIC Coupé
Attractive entry-level introduction to the world of AMG SUVs
Fascinating driving performance and the emotive appeal that is typical of the brand – the new Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 AMG Coupé displays impressive product substance.
As an AMG sports model, the coupé is an attractive entry-level introduction to the world of the AMG sports car and performance brand.
It brings the excitement of motorsport to day-to-day life for a wider range of customers. The GLE 450 AMG Coupé stands for maximum performance, authentic driving dynamics and the typical AMG DNA.
The compelling new AMG sports models such as the C 450 AMG and the GLE 450 AMG feature increased engine output, all-wheel drive as standard and special chassis components and braking systems from the classic AMG models, and thus honour the performance brand’s promise.
Thanks to the new 3.0-litre V6 biturbo engine generating 270 kW (367 hp) and maximum torque of 520 Nm, the GLE 450 AMG provides high sporty performance as shown by this dynamic acceleration value: it takes just 5.7 seconds to get from 0 to 100 km/h.
The new V6 biturbo engine is based on the BlueDIRECT engine family from Mercedes-Benz. Technical advances including a modified boost pressure allowed the AMG engineers to increase the engine’s power output and torque.

The DYNAMIC SELECT variable dynamic control system assigns fundamentally different characteristics to the five transmission modes of INDIVIDUAL, COMFORT, SLIPPERY, SPORT and SPORT+, which the driver is able to select using a rotary control on the centre console.
DYNAMIC SELECT networks all the control systems, generating different sets of parameters for distinct driving experiences.
The fifth, markedly dynamic SPORT+ transmission mode remains exclusive to AMG models. The names speak for themselves: SPORT and SPORT+ turn the GLE 450 AMG into a sporty, dynamic vehicle with pronounced longitudinal and transverse dynamics.
COMFORT is at the opposite end of the spectrum. Here the emphasis is on relaxed, effortless cruising with the greatest possible energy efficiency.
SLIPPERY mode optimises the handling on surfaces with low friction coefficients such as snow or ice. In addition, INDIVIDUAL mode enables the driver to programme and store personal preferences in the individual control strategies, regardless of the engine variant.
Display visualisation on the COMAND screen
In the GLE 450 AMG, DYNAMIC SELECT not only modulates the “hard skills” such as the chassis and suspension, steering or drive system.
It is also possible to experience the selected mode more intensively on an emotional level because various “soft skills” such as the engine sound, instruments or dynamic control of the headlamps vary too.
To this end, the nature of the various displays on the COMAND screen and in the cockpit changes according to the selected transmission mode.
At the same time, the active light function of the all-LED headlamps responds more spontaneously and the engine produces the whole range of sounds from sporty and dominant to poised and reticent:
if the driver selects COMFORT mode, the displays take on lesser importance and, like the engine, the dial instruments such as the rev counter show a relaxed response to the driver’s commands. In combination with comfort-oriented control of the drive system and suspension, the result is an exceptionally balanced drive on a par with a saloon.
The engine sound is reduced to a pleasant timbre, and the feedback from the road surface and surroundings is considerably quieter in the interior.
Things are very different when SPORT+ mode is selected. The character changes immediately, the gear changes performed by 9G-TRONIC are acoustically accentuated, especially when downshifting with the double-declutching function, and gear shifting is faster and sharper.
Appropriately the cockpit instruments also respond more immediately and “sharply”. The large central display visualises the longitudinal and lateral acceleration, the vehicle level, plus the steering angle with a photo-realistic motorsport graphic.
The engine sound is powerful and acoustically underscores the sports mode. In typical AMG style, every gear change is emotionally charged: partial cylinder suppression during gear changes by means of a momentary and precisely defined retardation of ignition and injection under full throttle speeds up the gear changes, and is also audible to the driver.
The emotional double-declutching functions during downshifts and the “exhaust rumbling” in overrun mode provide the fitting accompaniment.
As is customary for AMG, a special sports exhaust system was designed for the GLE 450. This fact removes any doubt: the GLE 450 AMG Coupé is a lively sports model of the highest order, and treats its occupants to an engrossing world of experience.
Pronounced dynamism around the car’s vertical axis
The driver will sense this through a more pronounced thirst for cornering and more. High agility and dynamism around the car’s vertical axis stem from an AMG speciality: the drive from the 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive is not split evenly, but is biased more to the rear in a ratio of 40:60.
The DYNAMIC SELECT transmission modes SPORT and SPORT+ deliver superior longitudinal agility and transverse dynamics – specifically as a result of the perfect interplay between the AMG-specific driving dynamics control systems ASR, ESP® with Dynamic Cornering Assist, the all-wheel drive control system 4ETS and the ADAPTIVE BRAKE control system.
Extremely sporty exterior design
The standard equipment for the GLE 450 AMG is fascinating from the first look: the special AMG bodystyling includes a specific front and rear apron, a spoiler lip in the colour of the vehicle and 53.3 cm (21-inch) AMG alloy wheels with a 5-twin-spoke design and tyres of size 275/45 R 21 (front) and 315/40 R 21 (rear).
Optionally available are 55.9 cm (22-inch) AMG 5-spoke light-alloy wheels – also with mixed-size tyres. Excellent traction levels are guaranteed here by the impressive tyres of size 285/40 R 22 (front) and 325/35 R 22 (rear).
As standard, the vehicle comes with the AIRMATIC package including an air suspension, infinitely variable adaptive damping system (ADS Plus) and automatic level control.
In SPORT mode the body is lowered by 15 millimetres and a further 10 millimetres in SPORT+ mode. The optional ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM boosts sportiness even further: this active roll stabilisation system reduces the roll angle when cornering dynamically so that the driver experiences increased transverse dynamics and driving enjoyment.
Driving stability and safety are also increased, especially at high speeds, guaranteeing that inimitable AMG driving feel.
AMG-typical interior elements
The interior of the GLE 450 AMG is an impressive sight with sports seats and the 3-spoke black nappa leather sports steering wheel, as well as trim parts in light longitudinal-grain aluminium and brushed stainless steel sports pedals with rubber studs.
Sporty round dials on the instrument cluster, including a 280 km/h speedometer scale, exude pure dynamism even while the car is at a standstill. AMG carbon-fibre and black piano lacquer trim enhance the appearance of the interior as an additional option.

Sportiness of a coupé, strengths of an SUV
The new GLE 63 Coupé combines the sportiness of a coupé with the strengths of an SUV. High agility, distinctive engine sound and typical sports car acceleration are united with poise and assurance, tremendous pulling power and perfect traction.
In one vehicle, the GLE 63 Coupé offers the typical SUV raised seating position and effortlessly unhurried superiority on the road, paired with the typical AMG longitudinal and transverse dynamics and direct response to driver commands.
The wide choice of different worlds of experience is based, among other things, on the DYNAMIC SELECT transmission modes, which for the first time permit such a wide spread of driving dynamics.
The five transmission modes of SLIPPERY, INDIVIDUAL, COMFORT, SPORT and SPORT+, which the driver selects using a rotary control on the centre console, assign fundamentally different characteristics in terms of driving dynamics.
Be it the response of the engine, gear-change strategy, ESP® thresholds, power assistance for the steering or characteristics of the dampers: the system networks all the control systems, generating different sets of parameters for distinct driving experiences.
The AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine: powerful or extra-powerful
In terms of drive system, GLE 63 Coupé customers have a choice between powerful and extra-powerful: the AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine develops a maximum power of 410 kW (557 hp) and a torque of 700 Nm.
The S-Model raises the respective values to 430 kW (585 hp) and 760 Nm. The difference in output and torque comes as a result of a higher maximum charge pressure.
Whichever variant the customer opts for, the 8-cylinder powerplant, which is assembled according to the “one man, one engine” philosophy, delivers immensely powerful performance: thus, the GLE 63 Coupé accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h
in 4.3 or 4.2 seconds (S-Model).
Fuel consumption values of 11.9 litres per 100 kilometres (NEDC (combined); CO2: 278 g/km) and compliance with the
EU6 standard demonstrate that maximum power, efficiency and environmental compatibility are by no means mutually exclusive for Mercedes-AMG.
As is customary for an AMG model, the sound from the new GLE 63 Coupé is unmistakable. The sound profile differs depending on the DYNAMIC SELECT transmission mode selected: relaxed and discreet in COMFORT mode or roaring and distinctive with SPORT+.
Here the driver experiences every gearshift in a more emotional way as the momentary retardation of ignition and injection under full throttle speeds up the gear shifting and is also audible behind the wheel.
The double-declutching function when downshifting and the “exhaust rumbling” in overrun mode make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up when in the cockpit – and evoke the sound of a DTM touring car.
Customers can further emphasise the engine sound from the sports exhaust system, because a Performance exhaust system is optionally available for both output variants.
Those who value a more noticeable sound can opt for an even more emotively appealing V8 engine sound – and experience the dynamic performance more intensely.
Power transmission: AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC
The power transmission, too, is made to measure. Depending on the mode selected for the variable DYNAMIC SELECT dynamic handling control system, AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC impresses with its great agility and spontaneity or superior responsiveness.
The transmission has a wide-ranging potential. It offers an impressively high shift speed and perfect transitions for a sportier driving style as well as smooth, barely perceptible gear changes for enjoyable cruising.
The M button allows the driver to emphasise the sporty character and to shift gear exclusively using the steering-wheel shift paddles.
As the seven-speed automatic transmission does not now shift independently on kick-down or upon reaching the maximum engine speed limit, it is possible to savour the tremendous pulling power of the V8 biturbo engine in all engine speed ranges.
A further speciality for the dynamically focused driver: the temporary “M mode”, which combines the performance of manual gear changes with automatic upshifts and downshifts.
This allows the driver to enjoy the vehicle’s impressive performance to the full. After the driver has shifted up or down manually using a shift paddle, the transmission independently reverts to automatic shift mode after a set period of time.
COMFORT mode with sailing function
With DYNAMIC SELECT, the COMFORT mode has an integrated sailing function. It helps to further lower fuel consumption: when the driver releases the accelerator in a speed range from 60 to 160 km/h, the engine is disengaged from the drive system.
The electronics reduce the engine speed to idle level, and the driving resistance is reduced by the compression and frictional forces of the engine in overrun mode.
The “sailing” function is indicated in the AMG instrument cluster by an icon depicting a stylised sailing yacht. The ECO start/stop function is also available in the COMFORT transmission mode, switching off the engine at traffic lights and helping to save fuel.
The seven-speed automatic transmission features a dual-turbine torsional damper with speed-sensitive centrifugal pendulum, which minimises vibrations while enhancing the passengers’ perceived comfort.
All-wheel drive with rear-biased power distribution
For AMG Performance 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive, Mercedes-AMG uses a specially designed transfer case: this exclusive solution distributes the drive power in a ratio of 40:60 between the front and rear axles, resulting in greater agility about the vertical axis of the vehicle.
The pay-off for the driver is even greater driving pleasure during high-speed cornering. The AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension with AIRMATIC package, consisting of air suspension, special spring struts, automatic level control and AMG’s exclusive infinitely variable damping characteristics with ADS Plus, is combined with the ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM.
This standard-fit system employs active anti-roll bars on the front and rear axles to reduce the body’s roll angle during cornering.
The reduced roll angle and outstanding cornering properties make for enhanced transverse dynamics and driving pleasure.
At the same time, the system provides increased driving stability and therefore safety, especially at higher speeds.
Roll stabilisation, damping and suspension adapt automatically to the prevailing driving situation, offering both optimum ride comfort and maximum stability.
The damping system changes its priorities depending on the preselected DYNAMIC SELECT mode. Sport+ mode puts the emphasis on the maximum possible transverse dynamics. Conversely, COMFORT mode enables maximum ride comfort.
The fully load-bearing air suspension system is speed-sensitive, lowering the body at higher speeds in order to minimise drag while increasing driving stability.
The DYNAMIC SELECT Sport mode firms up the shock absorbers and reduces the vehicle height by 15 millimetres. SPORT+ mode gives the GLE 63 Coupé an even firmer ride – with the emphasis on maximum possible transverse dynamics. In addition, the air suspension lowers the body by a further 10 millimetres.
The current operating conditions are detected via the steering angle sensor, four level sensors, three body sensors, the driving speed as well as the positions of the brake pedal and accelerator.
The control unit uses these signals for infinitely variable adjustment of the current damping force required for each individual wheel. There is also a special chassis button for the driver to alter the damping manually at any time.
DYNAMIC SELECT changes the driving dynamics in no time at all
Perfect interplay between all systems makes for a superior experience in the cockpit – whatever the driving situation or road conditions.
But that’s not all: DYNAMIC SELECT modifies the driving dynamics in no time at all. The GLE 63 Coupé adapts its character at lightning speed, depending on which transmission mode is activated.
In COMFORT mode, the control thresholds of the dynamic handling control systems ASR, ESP® with Dynamic Cornering Assist and the all-wheel drive control system 4ETS are configured for moderate, restrained dynamics.
SPORT and SPORT + permit greater longitudinal and transverse dynamics for more intense driving pleasure. In SLIPPERY transmission mode, on the other hand, the focus is on optimum traction and maximum driving stability given adverse road conditions.
INDIVIDUAL mode allows the driver to design their own personal set-up consisting of engine characteristics, shift strategy and damper tuning.
AMG-specific Sports Direct-Steer system and AMG high-performance braking system
In combination with the AMG-specific Sports Direct-Steer system, compact Performance steering wheel, elastokinematics on the front axle and more robustly designed rear-axle stabiliser bar, the handling is outstanding in all operating conditions.
The variable steering ratio makes for significantly improved agility, while high-speed driving safety is maintained.
The variable power assistance is dependent on the vehicle speed and the DYNAMIC SELECT programme and adapts perfectly to the driving situation.
Extremely short stopping distances and high stability: these are the strengths of the high-performance braking system with all-round ventilated and perforated brake discs of size 390 x 36 millimetres (front) and 345 x 26 (rear) and silver-painted brake callipers with AMG lettering.
Design: commanding, extroverted and powerful
Visually, the Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 Coupé skilfully embodies the firmly established principles of Mercedes-Benz design: sensuousness and clarity.
The top-of-the-range V8 model from Affalterbach manages in an emotively appealing way to bring the fascination of motorsport to everyday life with a powerful dominance.
A very first glance reveals the new four-door coupé to be an extrovert, standing powerfully on its large wheels.
The GLE 63 Coupé adopts the AMG design philosophy, familiar from many other high-performance vehicles, with the characteristic “A-wing” in the front apron.
This makes the SUV coupé clearly recognisable as a member of the AMG model family. Viewed from the front, the model’s sculptural design idiom is also defined by the bonnet with its two dynamic powerdomes and new radiator grille – as is typical of AMG, it features a twin-blade louvre in silver chrome with integral AMG lettering as well as a large, central Mercedes star.
The GLE 63 Coupé displays visual dominance with its “A-wing”. This design feature in the form of the stylised “A”, a hallmark of AMG, is three-dimensional and also serves as an air guide for the three air openings.
The A-wing is painted in the colour of the vehicle, while the trim strip is in silver chrome. The new front view is especially characterised by the two lateral, large air inlets, while the above-positioned, black flics ensure an optimal flow of air onto the cooling modules.
At the lower end of the front apron, a front splitter in the colour of the vehicle helps to reduce lift. The standard equipment package includes three-dimensionally formed LED headlamps.
Dominance is reinforced by lateral flared wheel arches
Flared wheel arches in black make for a systematic continuation of the visual dominance along the sides. Behind the wheel cutout, “V8 BITURBO” lettering points to the superior engine power of the GLE 63 Coupé.
An even more distinctive look is optionally available from illuminated aluminium-look side running boards with anti-slip rubber studs.
The extroverted look is enhanced by impressive AMG 10-spoke alloy wheels of size 53.3 cm (21-inch) with tyres of size 285/45 R 21 (front axle) and 325/40 R 21 (rear axle).
The rear end of the vehicle shows clear similarities with the design of the S-Class Coupé: with its narrow tail lights in three-dimensional look, the broad chrome badge positioned above and prominently placed Mercedes star, the GLE 63 Coupé has a decidedly sporty look.
Mercedes-AMG reinforces the visual dynamics with some specific design elements: the spoiler lip on the boot lid further improves the driving stability at high speeds, while the visual, lateral air outlets in the rear apron improve the cd value.
The AMG rear apron is given a dynamic look by diffuser fins and the integrated, chrome-plated twin tailpipe trims of the sports exhaust system.
The shape of the silver chrome trim strip is reminiscent of the “A-wing” in the front apron. As a result of the new nomenclature, the prominent AMG lettering is placed to the left of the Mercedes star, with the model identification GLE 63 to the right.
Exterior differentiation: GLE 63 S Coupé even more impressive
The A-wing on the GLE 63 S Coupé is painted in high-gloss black. In combination with the silver-chrome trim strip and black flics, this makes for an even sportier look.
AMG cross-spoke light-alloy wheels of size 55.9 cm (22-inch), painted in titanium grey with a high-sheen finish, ensure that the S-Model exudes an even more impressive air.
Optimum traction of the light-alloy wheels is guaranteed by tyres of size 285/40 R 22 (front axle) and 325/35 R 22 (rear axle).
The GLE 63 S Coupé is recognisable by its red-painted brake callipers; in addition, the GLE 63 model identification at the rear bears a special “S”.
High-grade interior: exclusive design elements and appointments
Like the exterior design, the interior of the GLE 63 Coupé also boasts many exclusive design elements and appointments. High-grade materials, first-class precision and a luxurious quality feel are the hallmarks of the interior.
Trim elements in light longitudinal-grain aluminium provide clever highlights.
Thanks to their specific upholstery with greater contouring and higher side bolsters at the front, the sports seats offer excellent lateral support.
Perforated nappa leather, special seat upholstery layout with topstitching and AMG badges make for an exclusive look and feel.
This is further complemented by the 3-spoke Performance steering wheel: the steering-wheel rim, with flattened bottom section, in black nappa leather with perforated grip area assists a sporty driving style.
Silver aluminium shift paddles with “UP” and “DOWN” lettering and a precise pressure point serve manual gear changes.
The instrument panel on the GLE 63 Coupé is in black ARTICO man-made leather. The semi-integrated central display visualises the individual DYNAMIC SELECT transmission modes with animated graphics.
The centre console accommodates the COMAND controller with optimally ergonomically positioned touchpad; on the right is the DYNAMIC SELECT rotary actuator for the various transmission modes.
Located above is the M button for the manual transmission mode, with the button for manual damper adjustment found on the left.
Instrument cluster in exciting AMG design
Two large round dials with silver chrome surrounds and the central 11.4 cm (4.4-inch) multifunction display provide the driver with comprehensive information.
The typical AMG equipment package includes sporty dials in carbon-fibre look with 320 km/h speedometer scale and red pointers, as well as the main menu including RACETIMER, manual gear indicator and AMG start-up screen.
Optimal infotainment is guaranteed by the Audio 20 CD system with eight loudspeakers and the Remote Online communication module for the use of Mercedes connect me services in Europe (may vary from country to country).
S-Model even more exclusive in the interior as well
The higher-powered Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S Coupé also offers genuine added benefits in the interior. For even more intense contact with the vehicle, the grip area of the Performance steering wheel is in DINAMICA microfibre.
A sporty look also dominates the driver’s field of vision: the instrument cluster has an even higher-class look with fine red scale graduations around the speedometer and rev counter and a grey decorative band.
Exclusive nappa leather upholstery not only extends to the five seats, but also to the entire dashboard, centre console, door trim and armrests.
AMG medallions in the head restraints lend the interior a special, luxurious note. Set against black interior appointments, the grey seat belts and grey contrasting topstitching underline the vehicle’s sporty character.
