S 55 AMG and CL 55 AMG:sporty V8 flagship models with exclusive appointments
- AMG V8 supercharged engine delivering an output of 368 kW/500 hp
- AMG SPEEDSHIFT with Formula-1-style steering-wheel gearshift
- Upholstered throughout in fine leather with AMG styling features
- PRE-SAFE occupant protection system as standard for the S 55 AMG
Following the extensive model updates for the S-Class Saloon and the CL-Class Coupé, new life has also been breathed into the S 55 AMG and CL 55 AMG models. Beneath the bonnet of both AMG high-performance vehicles beats the heart of a top athlete – the 5.5-litre supercharged V8 engine familiar from the SL 55 AMG. The standard specification of the exclusively appointed flagship AMG models has now been upgraded with features worth the equivalent of up to € 11,000 compared to the outgoing models. As well as the long-wheelbase variant, the S 55 AMG is also available in an extra-dynamic, short-wheelbase guise.
Sprint from 0 – 100 km/h covered in a blistering 4.8 seconds
Fitted in the S-Class and the CL-Class, the supercharged V8 engine develops a maximum output of 368 kW/500 hp at 6100 rpm and a peak torque of 700 Nm which is maintained constantly between 2750 and 4000 rpm. Out on the road, this translates into performance figures worthy of a sports car: both models complete the sprint from standstill to 100 km/h in a mere 4.8 seconds, and power on to reach the 200‑ km/h mark in just 16.3 seconds. The top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h. Both cars return fuel consumption figures of 13.2 litres/100 km (NEDC combined cycle, premium unleaded).
Power transfer to the wheels in the S 55 AMG and CL 55 AMG is taken care of by an AMG SPEEDSHIFT five-speed automatic transmission, which successfully blends the attributes of a manual transmission with the convenience of an automatic unit. In manual mode (“M”), the driver can change gear using the buttons on the steering wheel, like in a Formula-1 car. The transmission boasts a number of other special technical features: the optimal gear selection function and the active downshift function for maximising engine braking power ahead of a bend combine to offer the ultimate in dynamic motoring. Mechanical torque converter lockup from first gear and more responsive gear changes which are executed up to 35 percent more quickly round off the AMG SPEEDSHIFT package.
AMG sports suspension with Active Body Control (ABC) as standard
Both of the V8 supercharged top-of-the-range models are fitted as standard with
Active Body Control (ABC), whose distinguishing fortes include significantly reduced body roll on bends, as well as reduced vehicle dive and squat when braking and
accelerating. The driver can also select between sporty or more comfort-oriented characteristics at the touch of a button. The cars’ tremendous power is safely harnessed by the AMG spring struts with stiffer tuning, customised dynamic handling control systems and the powerful AMG braking system taken from the SL 55 AMG. Internally ventilated, perforated discs all round and eight-piston fixed callipers at the front wheels minimise stopping distances and ensure high resistance to fading.
AMG bodystyling and 18-inch light-alloy wheels with mixed-size tyres
The new V8 Kompressor models can be distinguished from the other S-Class and
CL-Class models by the dynamic AMG bodystyling, which comes as standard. The front end is characterised by the new-design AMG front apron, with larger openings for the intercooler. The side view reveals AMG side skirts, “V8 KOMPRESSOR” lettering on the front wings and 18-inch AMG light-alloy wheels in a new twin-spoke design which are shod with mixed-size tyres. Both models feature 8.5″-wide light-alloy wheels fitted with 245/45 R 18 tyres at the front, and 9″-wide wheels at the rear with tyres measuring 265/40 R 18. The twin-tract AMG sports exhaust with two sets of chromed twin tailpipes and a distinctive AMG rear apron – with a particularly sporty diffusor on the CL 55 AMG – lend a dynamic touch to the rear.
Further enhanced interior appointments and exclusive nappa leather in a choice of three colours
The AMG instrument cluster with its 320-km/h scale, an AMG ergonomic sports steering wheel with gearshift buttons together with door sill panels sporting the AMG logo underline the tremendous sense of style. The S 55 AMG comes as standard with dynamic multicontour seats in the front, with electrical adjustment and memory function. This newly developed seat ensures that the degree of lateral support provided adjusts automatically when cornering at speed. The CL 55 AMG is equipped with electrically adjustable AMG sports seats in the front, which provide optimal lateral support and come with multicontour and memory functions. Both models share the same AMG-styled seat design and perforation pattern, with an AMG badge set into the seat backrests.
Standard equipment available with the S 65 AMG also includes the PRE-SAFE anticipatory occupant protection system which can recognise a potential accident situation early enough to take appropriate measures to prepare the occupants and the vehicle.
