Diesotto
Under the hood of the F 700 research vehicle lurks a completely new drive concept: the DIESOTTO engine.
For this engine Mercedes-Benz has combined the strengths of low-emission gasoline engines with the fuel consumption benefits of modern diesel engines. As with a conventional gasoline engine, the gasoline/air mixture is ignited by means of spark plugs when starting and under full load. At low and medium engine speeds – which engines run at most of the time – the gasoline engine automatically turns into a compression ignition engine, i.e. a diesel, and the mixture ignites in different locations simultaneously. This homogeneous combustion offers two advantages: lower fuel consumption and low nitrogen oxide emissions. The DIESOTTO engine is therefore able to use just a regular three-way catalyst, yet it currently already fulfills the future Euro 6 emissions standard.
The DIESOTTO principle
DIESOTTO is a modular engine concept featuring a variety of different high-tech elements: downsizing with turbocharging, direct gasoline injection, variable valve timing gear, homogeneous charge compression ignition, variable crank assembly as well as a hybrid module and an engine control module.
