Now this is an almost mythical beast
To coincide with the start of the 1999 winter season, Mercedes-AMG now also offers a 4MATIC variant of its sporty E 55 AMG high-performance sedan.
On ice or snow, cobblestones or leaves, in the wet or in other tricky driving conditions, the combination of 4MATIC and ESP in the E55 AMG 4MATIC provides maximum safety. The limited-production four-wheel drive model is based on the E 430 4MATIC and is available in both saloon and estate versions.
The 4MATIC models have the same engine power as the E 55 AMG and take only fractionally longer to sprint from 0 – 100 km/h (saloon 5.8 seconds, estate 6.0 seconds).
Externally the E 55 AMG 4MATIC saloon and estate can be told apart from the regular versions by their 18-inch AMG wheels and the special AMG styling comprising front apron, side mouldings and rear apron, while beneath the surface they harbour the 5.5 litre engine and specially tuned AMG suspension. The lavish, comfort-oriented interior of the E 55 AMG 4MATIC corresponds to that of the rear-wheel drive E 55 AMG.
