The E-Class Coupé

Intelligence in its finest form

Highlights of the new E-Class Coupé at a glance
Hot and cool – the E-Class Coupé shows a further development of the Mercedes-Benz design idiom with its puristic, surface-accentuated lines.
The Coupé is considerably longer, wider and higher than its predecessor, which above all improves spaciousness and comfort in the rear.

The Coupé has more kneeroom in the rear, ensuring long-distance comfort for four occupants on four fully-fledged seats of coupé-specific design, new highlights create a high-quality ambience in the sensuous and luxurious interior. They include e.g. air vents in a new turbine look, and the new interior colours “yacht blue” and “titian red”.

The rear lights have a new welcoming light effect and an innovative crystal look.
The intelligent washer/wiper system MAGIC VISION CONTROL achieves an optimum cleaning effect without any vision obscuring flood of water, and is fully heated.

In addition the E-Class Coupé features all the intelligent innovations of the E-Class Saloon. These include e.g. the Widescreen Cockpit, touch controls on the steering wheel, comprehensive smartphone integration, the extended Driving Assistance package, the Remote Parking Pilot, Car-to-X communication, the AIR BODY CONTROL suspension and MULTIBEAM LED headlamps.

The new E-Class Coupé
Stylish and sporty

With its expressive coupé-esque proportions, clear and sensual design and long-distance comfort for four people, the new E-Class Coupé combines the beauty and classic virtues of a grand tourer with state-of-the-art technology.

It also offers the intelligence of the E-Class family with full smartphone integration, Widescreen Cockpit and the latest assistance systems with the option of, among other functions, partially automated driving. Powerful engines with low exhaust emissions and comfortable suspension systems with selective damping provide the guarantee of a sporty and agile driving experience.

After the world’s most intelligent executive saloon, the Estate and the All-Terrain, the successful E-Class family now welcomes another new member: the Coupé. Based technically on the Saloon, the sportily exclusive Coupé marks a next step in the evolution of the Mercedes-Benz design idiom.

With its perfect proportions, the new Coupé exhibits a puristic, surface-accentuated design with reduced lines and sensuous forms. Both hot and cool, the reduced design idiom represents beauty and elegance while emphasising the Coupé’s sporty and luxurious personality.

The coupé-esque proportions typical of Mercedes-Benz are characterised by a distinctive front end with low-positioned sports grille and central star, a long bonnet with powerdomes, a rearward-shifted, squat greenhouse and a muscular rear end.

The dynamic looks are underlined by four frameless, fully retractable side windows and the absence of a visible B-pillar. With these clear forms, the design of the Coupé conveys an air of luxury and style alike.

World premiere: welcoming function of the rear lights
Equally typical of a Mercedes coupé are the two-part, extremely flat LED tail lamps, which in combination with MULTIBEAM LED headlamps celebrate the world premiere of a welcoming function.

When the vehicle is opened, the tail light LEDs illuminate successively from the centre of the vehicle outwards. On locking the vehicle, the light sequence runs in the opposite direction. Both are additionally combined with an up and down dimming feature.

This taillight show welcomes and says goodbye to the vehicle user similarly to the familiar welcome feature of the blue optical-fibre show in the front headlamp. Thanks to innovative crystal optics, the tail lamps also have a brilliant appearance reminiscent of the glow of a jet engine.

Sporty, luxurious interior with refined details
The interior of the new E-Class Coupé embodies the synthesis of sporty emotion and luxurious intelligence.
The two brilliant, optionally available 12.3-inch (31.2 cm) displays with a high resolution of 1920 x 720 pixels – unique in this segment – are merged under a single lens to produce a Widescreen Cockpit that appears to float in space.

As the key design element it emphasises the width, as does the fascia-spanning trim, which terminates with a dynamic sweep in the door panel. The instrument cluster in the driver’s direct line of vision shows virtual instruments which can be represented in three different styles: “Classic”, “Sport” and “Progressive”.

The entry-level model combines two dials and a 7-inch (17.8 cm) colour display cluster (1000 x 600 pixels resolution) with a central 8.4-inch (21.3 cm) screen diagonal (960 x 540 pixels). The dials, instrument cluster and central display are installed in a single frame with a high-gloss piano-lacquer look.

A decidedly sporty touch is provided by the air vents, whose design in silver shadow is inspired by turbine blades.
Touch control buttons in the steering wheel enable the driver to control the instrument cluster and multimedia system using finger swipes without having to take a hand off the steering wheel.

Additional controls come in the form of a touchpad with controller in the centre console, which can also recognise handwriting, plus the LINGUATRONIC voice control system. There are also direct-access buttons for controlling the air conditioning, for example, and for convenient activation and deactivation of certain driver assistance systems.

The avant-garde yet highly luxurious seats in the Coupé take their cue from the Saloon. The sporty individual-seat characteristics find their distinctive impression in all four seats.

High-grade materials and contemporary colour landscapes come together to create a sporty, contemporary luxury. The attractive appointments in yacht blue in combination with macchiato beige lend the vehicle a cool, exclusive yachting look. Especially for the E-Class Coupé, there is a choice of two new, light wood trim packages in open-pore and high-gloss finishes.

Precisely executed seams give emphasis to the seat design. In conjunction with AMG Line it is also possible to choose very sporty, highly contrasting leather interiors in black/classic red or black/deep white, all with horizontal seams. The wide range of exterior paint finishes is harmoniously attuned to the modern interior colour schemes

The interior lighting makes exclusive use of durable, energy-saving LED technology. The same applies to the optionally available enhanced ambient lighting with 64 colours.

Diversity to suit every taste
Even the AVANTGARDE standard equipment package is abundantly configured. Alternatively, there is the AMG Line, which differs from AVANTGARDE by such features as front and rear bumpers as well as side skirts and larger AMG Styling wheels. The dots in the diamond radiator grille are chrome-plated, while the brake discs on the front axle are perforated.

The interior boasts features such as seats in high-grade ARTICO/DINAMICA microfibre in black with grey contrasting topstitching, the Seat Comfort package, ambience lighting and an AMG leather sport steering wheel. Additional individualisation options for both lines come courtesy of the Night Package with a host of design details in high-gloss black.

Larger and more luxurious
With a length of 4826 mm (+123 mm), a width of 1860 mm (+74 mm) and a height of 1430 mm (+33 mm), the new E-Class Coupé clearly outstrips its predecessor in terms of length, width and height. The principal beneficiary of the wider track, with 1605 mm at the front (+67 mm) and 1609 mm at the rear (+68 mm), is the driving dynamics.

The significantly larger footprint compared with the previous model is to the benefit of passengers with extra spaciousness and comfort. They profit especially in terms of rear knee room, front and rear shoulder room as well as rear headroom. In each of the four fully fledged seats with coupé-specific individual seat character, the driver and passengers enjoy genuine comfort on long journeys as well as the classic virtues of a grand tourer.

Performance with high-tech
Powerful and efficient petrol and diesel engines, all equipped with the ECO start/stop function and complying with the Euro 6 emission standard – among them a new four-cylinder diesel engine – make for lively performance and driving enjoyment.

At market launch, there will be an initial choice between one diesel and three petrol engines. Further engine variants and 4MATIC versions will follow.

New four-cylinder diesel engine
Designed to meet the future RDE limits, the four-cylinder diesel engine from the new family of Mercedes-Benz engines opens up a new dimension in efficiency.

With a displacement of around two litres, the new diesel engine delivers 143 kW/194 hp, while the E 220 d impresses with a combined NEDC average consumption of 4.0 liter litres per 100 kilometres. This is equivalent to CO2 emissions of 106 grams per kilometre, with exemplary NOx values.

In addition, the four-cylinder with single-stage turbocharger and variable turbine geometry is distinguished by a high level of refinement. Both the cylinder head and the crankcase are made of aluminium.

All the models available at market launch are equipped as standard with the 9GTRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission, which allows fast gearshifts along with lower engine speeds. From mid-2017 the range will be extended by the E 200 (Fuel consumption combined: 6.0 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 136 g/km) with a 6-speed manual transmission.

Suspension – sporty comfort
The suspension on the new E-Class Coupé offers agile driving pleasure on winding roads together with exceptional ride comfort. The Coupé comes as standard with DIRECT CONTROL suspension.

In the interests of a sporty look, the suspension is 15 millimetres lower than on the Saloon and is tuned for comfort with an amplitude-dependent damping system.

The DYNAMIC BODY CONTROL suspension with adjustable damping is available as optional equipment. This suspension is likewise lowered. Using a switch in the centre console for the DYNAMIC SELECT system included as standard, the driver can vary the damping characteristics of this suspension. Three modes are available, offering a wide range of adjustment options: “Comfort”, “Sport” and “Sport+”.

AIR BODY CONTROL multi-chamber air suspension
Alternatively, the new E-Class Coupé can be equipped with multi-chamber air suspension, including all-round roll/pitch/heave stabilisation. Advantages of this system: three chambers of different size in the spring struts of the rear axle and two in the spring struts of the front axle make it possible to control the hardness of the suspension in three stages.

In this way, the occupants enjoy soft basic suspension, along with the secure feeling of good handling stability at higher speeds.

The multi-chamber air suspension is augmented by a continuous, electronically controlled adaptive damping system. The damping at each individual wheel is adjusted fully automatically to suit the current driving situation and condition of the road – such as in the case of evasive manoeuvres or on rough tracks. The system therefore delivers good ride comfort along with excellent driving dynamics.

Using the DYNAMIC SELECT switch, the driver can also select different suspension characteristics in combination with the AIR BODY CONTROL system: “Comfort”, ECO, “Sport”, “Sport +” and Individual.

DYNAMIC SELECT – choose your own driving characteristics
However, the DYNAMIC SELECT system not only makes it possible to select the suspension characteristics in combination with DYNAMIC BODY CONTROL and AIR BODY CONTROL, but it also enables the driver to influence other vehicle settings – such as the throttle response, ECO start/stop function, shift points of the automatic transmission and more. Depending on the equipment level, DYNAMIC SELECT provides the following transmission modes: Comfort, ECO, Sport, Sport + and Individual. “Individual” allows drivers to configure their own preferred vehicle settings.

Full smartphone integration
A new era of connectivity and digitalisation is marked by the infotainment system in the E-Class Coupé with COMAND Online. This includes effortless integration of the smartphone into the vehicle’s infotainment system by means of capacitive aerial coupling and wireless charging.

This means that compatible mobile phones can be charged wirelessly and also connected to the vehicle’s exterior aerial. This dispenses with the need to find a plug and connect a cable. There is an added advantage: using Near Field Communication, the customer’s smartphone becomes the digital vehicle key with which the car can be locked and unlocked as well as started.

If the vehicle is equipped with COMAND Online, it is possible to use Apple’s smartphone-based infotainment system CarPlay® as well as Google’s Android Auto™.

Internet and diverse data sources even in the basic version
The infotainment system Audio 20 USB is available as an alternative to COMAND Online. Like COMAND Online, this comes with a Bluetooth® hands-free system and also has internet capability with a Bluetooth®-capable mobile phone with mobile phone card and data option. COMAND Online also offers an integrated hotspot functionality.

Clear road instead of traffic jams: Live Traffic Information
Whereas the familiar Live Traffic Information was previously reserved for COMAND Online, the new E-Class Coupé offers this function with Audio 20 USB with the Garmin® MAP PILOT System. Live Traffic Information allows the reception of up-to-date and precise traffic information in real time, with significant benefits for dynamic route guidance and precise calculation of estimated arrival time.

Other new features in conjunction with COMAND Online include a Free Flow display – green lines clearly show the driver where traffic is currently flowing freely – as well as the display and consideration of traffic information away from the main roads. In addition COMAND Online informs the driver both audibly and visually when the vehicle is approaching the end of a traffic tailback as a hazard.

Mercedes me connect Concierge Service: personalised attention
A further comfort highlight is the new Concierge Service, which is exclusively available in all E-Class models in combination with Mercedes me connect. Subscribing customers are able to use numerous individual services: from making a restaurant reservation to obtaining tips about tourist routes, information on cultural and sporting events and bookings through to sending navigation destinations directly to the vehicle.

Access is straightforward: registered Mercedes me connect users can call up the Concierge Service in 20 countries across Europe, either via the iCall button in the vehicle or using the Mercedes me app. The personal concierge takes care of everything else.

E-Class innovations on board
As a member of the current E-Class family, the new Coupé is significantly more intelligent than its predecessor. It comes with all the features of the E-Class, the most intelligent executive saloon. Active Brake Assist comes as standard. It is able to warn the driver of an imminent collision, provide optimum support with emergency braking and, if necessary, also autonomously apply the brakes.

In addition to slower-moving, stopping or stationary vehicles, it can also detect pedestrians crossing in the danger zone ahead of the vehicle.
Other highlights on the way to autonomous driving include e.g. the Distance Pilot DISTRONIC with Steering Pilot, which is not only able to keep the car at the correct distance behind vehicles in front on all types of road, but, for the first time, can also automatically follow them at a speed of up to 210 km/h.

Also new in the E-Class Coupé is the option to move the vehicle remotely into and out of garages and parking spaces using a smartphone app, enabling the occupants to enter and exit the car easily, even where space is very tight.

Other intelligent systems are also available for the E-Class Coupé, including:
high-resolution MULTIBEAM LED headlamps. These headlamps, each with 84 individually activated high-performance LEDs, automatically illuminate the road surface with a hitherto unsurpassed, precision-controlled distribution of exceptionally bright light – without dazzling other road users.

MAGIC VISION CONTROL – an intelligent and highly efficient wash/wipe system for the windscreen. The wiper blade always delivers washer fluid directly in front of the wiping edge, via the water feed line integrated into the blade – and it does this in both wiping directions.

The result is that there is no surge of water when fluid is sprayed, which can impair the driver’s vision, and at the same time the maximum cleaning effect is achieved. The complete MAGIC VISION CONTROL system, including the wiper blades, is heated at low temperatures to prevent snow or ice from sticking in winter.

E-Class Coupé with tradition
As an exclusive and sporty coupé, the latest member of the E-Class family can look back on an almost fifty-year history. Its first ancestor was unveiled by Mercedes-Benz in 1968 (at that time known as the “Stroke Eight” coupé). Further model series followed – for a while also under the name CLK. Each generation combined superb design with agile sportiness and contemporary luxury at a high level.

Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer Daimler AG

Design
Sheer passion for design
The design of the new E-Class Coupé exudes modernity and luxury, reflecting the values of the premium brand.
The new E-Class Coupé shows a further development of the Mercedes-Benz design idiom with its puristic, surface-accentuating design, reduced lines and sensuous forms. Its design systematically follows the principle of sensuous clarity, presenting the Coupé as an aesthetically pleasing and modern work of art. Both hot and cool, it exudes luxury and elegance while underscoring its sporty personality.

Athletic dynamism with perfect proportions
In its basic form the E-Coupé has the proportions of a sporty coupé. A striking front section with a low sports grille and central Mercedes star merges into a long bonnet with powerdomes, emphasising the sporty nature of the Coupé. This in turn merges with the flat greenhouse, which is set well back.

The stretched, dynamic look of the greenhouse is underlined by frameless side windows and the absence of a continuous B-pillar. This visually extends the window line, and lets the greenhouse flow powerfully into the muscular rear end. A high beltline delineated in polished anodised aluminium emphasises the sporty appearance.

The puristic design philosophy with reduced lines characterises the sensuous side surfaces. Only a gradually rising balance line structures the side wall and door. All the radii and details are carefully balanced, emphasising the high quality and exclusivity of this model. With these clear forms, the design of the Coupé conveys an air of luxury and modernity alike.

As on all Mercedes-Benz sports cars, the mirror bases are mounted on the waistline of the E-Class Coupé.
The Coupé is fitted with 17-inch wheels as standard, with wheel sizes up to 20 inches available as an alternative.

Striking front section
The central feature of the front section is the single-louvred diamond grille with an integrated central star and dots in high-gloss black (chromed dots for AMG Line). A dynamic bumper with a chromed front wing and width-emphasising air inlet with a diamond-pattern mesh rounds off the front end.

The intelligent technology of the new E-Class Coupé is also reflected in the headlamps. The daytime driving lamps take the form of a double eyebrow as a characteristic light signature. The E-Class Coupé is already equipped with LED high-performance headlamps in its basic version. High-resolution MULTIBEAM LED headlamps are available as an alternative.

These each use 84 individually controlled high-performance LED modules to illuminate the road surface automatically with an extremely bright and precisely directed beam of light, without dazzling other road users. That is because this grid allows the light distribution of the left and right headlamps to be controlled separately and adapted to the changing situation on the road quickly and dynamically.

Muscular rear end
The rear end is dominated by an extended, sensuously sculpted and muscle-like shoulder above each wheel arch. Extremely flat, two-part rear lights with LED technology, a typical feature of coupé models, plus separate reflectors, create an impression of width and ensure maximum differentiation from the Saloon.

In conjunction with MULTIBEAM LED headlamps, a welcoming function celebrates its world debut in the striking rear lights. When the vehicle is opened, the taillight LEDs illuminate successively from the centre of the vehicle outwards. On locking the vehicle, the light sequence runs in the opposite direction.

Both are additionally combined with an up and down dimming feature. This rear light show welcomes and says goodbye to the vehicle user. It is controlled by a microprocessor housed in the rear light.

The tail lamps also have a brilliant appearance reminiscent of the glow of a jet engine. This crystal effect is achieved by reflector technology with a special surface structure.

Beautiful and functional: optimal aerodynamics
The emotive design of the new E-Class Coupé also impresses with functional qualities. With a Cd figure of 0.25 it has the best aerodynamics in its segment, for example.

This puts it at the same level as its already aerodynamically outstanding predecessor – despite a much larger front cross-section and larger wheels. With respect to aerodynamic lift, the new E-Class Coupé even falls below the extremely good level of its predecessor. The low rear axle lift coefficient (cAH) of 0.07 provides a safe and comfortable driving impression, especially at high speeds.

Space concept and interior
A new dimension in top quality
The interior of the new E-Class Coupé provides long-distance comfort for four occupants and embodies the synthesis of sporty emotion and luxurious intelligence.

With a length of 4826 mm, a width of 1860 mm and a height of 1430 mm, the new E-Class Coupé clearly outstrips its predecessor in terms of length, width and height.

Sporty, luxurious interior with refined details
The interior of the new E-Class Coupé conveys a feeling of generous spaciousness. The two optionally available 12.3-inch (31.2 cm) displays with a high resolution of 1920 x 720 pixels – unique in this segment – are merged under a single lens to produce a Widescreen Cockpit that appears to float in space. The key design element, it emphasises the width, as does the fascia-spanning trim, which terminates with a dynamic sweep in the door panel. Positioned in the driver’s direct field of vision, the instrument cluster shows virtual instruments, which can be selected by the driver in three different styles, “Classic”, “Sport” and “Progressive”, depending on which information and views the driver considers relevant.

A decidedly sporty note is set by the air vents, whose form is heavily influenced by the look of a turbine engine. They are styled down to the smallest detail and fully finished in silver shadow.

High-grade materials and contemporary colour landscapes come together to create a sporty, contemporary luxury. The attractive appointments in yacht blue in combination with macchiato beige lend the vehicle a cool, exclusive yachting look. There is a wide choice of trim for the E-Coupé. This ranges from puristic modernity in aluminium to innovative woven metal and modern wood decors. Especially for the E-Class Coupé, there is a choice of two new wood trim packages in light open-pore and high-gloss finishes. As a new feature with open-pore wood, the centre console is also in open-pore wood.

The avantgarde, highly luxurious seats with a sportily contoured individual seat look make an integrated overall impression and are suited to the biometrics of the occupants. They provide good lateral support without detracting from sporty comfort. The seat contour follows the pronounced side bolsters, and depending on the specification, the centre section has sporty transverse or sensuous, modern longitudinal seams. The colours of the side bolsters and the centre sections of the backrest and cushion harmonise perfectly with the overall sculpture of the seats. Numerous material combinations ranging from fabric/ARTICO man-made leather to embossed leather and nappa leather with diamond quilting are possible.

Touch Control buttons in the steering wheel enable the driver to control the instrument cluster and multimedia system using finger swipes without having to take their hands off the steering wheel. Additional controls come in the form of a touchpad with controller in the centre console, which can also recognise handwriting, plus the LINGUATRONIC voice control system. There are also direct-access buttons for controlling the air conditioning, for example, and for convenient activation and deactivation of certain driver assistance systems.
Lighting atmosphere with 64 colours
The interior lighting makes exclusive use of durable, energy-saving LED technology. With 64 colours, the optionally extended ambience lighting offers a wealth of individual settings. It adds illuminating highlights to e.g. the trim, the central display, the front stowage compartment on the centre console, the door handle recesses, the door pockets, the front and rear footwells.

Eyes always on the road
A head-up display is a new feature in the E-Class Coupé. As in a jet fighter, it projects important information directly into the driver’s field of vision on the windscreen, ensuring that there is less distraction from the road ahead. The system provides information on speed, speed limits, navigation instructions and messages from DISTRONIC.
The driver can adjust the height of the virtual image so that it can be easily viewed. On vehicles with seat memory function this feature stores the individual settings. A range of display content can also be enabled or disabled, and the brightness of the display adjusted individually.
Model range and equipment

Variety and individuality
Already generously equipped as standard, the E-Class Coupé can be enhanced with numerous options to suit personal preferences.
Four model variants of the new E-Class Coupé will be available at the market launch:

Under the microscope: MAGIC VISION CONTROL adaptive windscreen cleaning system
Clear view as if by magic
Amazing to watch: the wiper blade moves across the heavily soiled windscreen, there is no washer water to be seen, the vehicle occupants notice nothing and the windscreen is suddenly clean – as if by magic. This is the highly efficient, adaptive wash/wipe system MAGIC VISION CONTROL developed by Mercedes-Benz. The system cleans the windscreen without the splash of water that usually briefly impairs the driver’s field of view in the case of conventional windscreen washing systems.

Although the spray of water is invisible, the E-Class Coupé likewise uses conventional washer fluid for a clear view. The way in which it reaches the windscreen is however unusual. It is done by integrated water ducts on both sides of wiper blade, with fine, laser-bored spray holes.

Depending on the movement direction of the wiper blade, it means that this innovative wash/wipe system always directs the fluid unobtrusively and very efficiently where it is required – on the windscreen, directly ahead of the wiper lip. The outlet holes are spread over the entire length of the wiper blade and are closer together on the outside than they are on the inside, because the outside of the wipers have to wipe and clean a larger area.

Programmes for summer and winter driving
The Mercedes-Benz MAGIC VISION CONTROL system is the world’s first wash/wipe system to be intelligently controlled by semi-automated washer programmes.

In the summer, smaller quantities of water are required to remove light dust. In the winter, more water is needed to remove soiling mixed with road salt. The system operates according to the outside temperature, and adaptively adjusts the amount of water to suit the conditions and the driver’s cleaning requirements.

The MAGIC VISION CONTROL wiper blades of the E-Class Coupé are fully heated. This makes Mercedes-Benz the first manufacturer worldwide to offer a fully heated wash/wipe system. It consists of a washer fluid reservoir heated by coolant residual heat, electric heating for the entire hose system and a fully heated wiper blade.

In winter this effectively prevents snow from sticking to the wiper blades. The blade’s two spring rails are each equipped with a heater foil with an output of 40 watts per blade, which heats the spoiler and the wiper lip. This also keeps the wiper blade flexible in winter, for optimum cleaning effect.

The heating is also operated on demand, depending on the activation period and the outside temperature. In very low temperatures the system switches to its maximum output of 200 watts. In temperatures to under plus five degrees Celsius, the heating operates in energy-saving mode and only delivers the output necessary to thaw and keep the cleaning system clear.

Infotainment
Connectivity und entertainment at its best
A new era of connectivity and digitalisation is marked by the infotainment system in the E-Class Coupé with COMAND Online. In the E-Class Coupé, connectivity already begins with the effortless integration of a smartphone into the onboard infotainment system, thanks to capacitive antenna connection and wireless charging.

This means that mobile phones can be charged wirelessly and at the same time connected to the vehicle’s exterior aerial. This dispenses with the need to find a plug and connect a cable.

Simply place the device on the charging pad at the front of the centre console to connect the smartphone by Near Field Communication (NFC) with the multimedia system. The inductive charging pad measures 153 x 90 millimetres and is suitable for mobile devices that support the Qi standard. There is an added advantage: using Near Field Communication, the customer’s smartphone becomes the digital vehicle key with which the car can be locked and unlocked as well as started.

The wireless charging system works with all mobile devices which support or can be upgraded to support the Qi standard. The charging pad is integrated into the quick stowage tray at the front of the centre console. A connection is established between head unit and mobile phone via Near Field Communication (NFC) by touching the “NFC” logo. Phone calls can then be made via the Bluetooth® handsfree system.

Smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto AutoTM
If the vehicle is equipped with COMAND Online, it is possible to use Apple’s smartphone-based infotainment system CarPlay® as well as Google’s Android Auto™. If a corresponding smartphone is connected by USB, the customer can, if desired, switch to the CarPlay® or Android AutoTM interface.

This allows internet surfing without restriction when the vehicle is stationary. With COMAND Online, the Mercedes-Benz apps can also be used while driving.

Audio playback is possible from various sources with all variants. For example via Bluetooth® or USB stick. COMAND Online also offers an integrated video playback and hotspot functionality. It allows passengers in all seats to connect different WiFi-capable devices, such as laptop or tablet computers, to the internet.

Modern-style navigation
In combination with the optional Garmin® MAP PILOT system, this makes Audio 20 USB a fully-fledged navigation system. The map display will be adapted to follow the familiar Mercedes logic with the launch of the E-Class Coupé.

COMAND Online offers fast 3D hard-drive navigation with topographical map display, photo-realistic 3D buildings and 3D map rotations. The system presents its content interactively and its features include an animated compass.

In addition COMAND

Online informs the driver both audibly and visually when the vehicle is approaching the end of a traffic tailback as a hazard. The received traffic information is based on so-called “Floating Car Data” the key technology for precise acquisition of traffic data.

Other new features include a Free Flow display – green lines plainly show the driver where the roads are currently clear – as well as the display and inclusion of traffic information away from the main roads.

3D sound with concert hall experience
As in the Saloon, the Frontbass system in the Coupé delivers a special listening experience as standard. It uses the space in the cross member and side member of the body structure as a resonance chamber for the bass speakers.

The standard audio system has an output of 4 x 25 watts and seven speakers. The Burmester® surround sound system with 13 speakers and a 590 watt amplifier with Digital Sound Processing is available as optional equipment.

Alongside the premium sound system, the innovative Burmester® high-end 3D surround sound system is also available. This treats the occupants to a listening experience reminiscent of the acoustics in a concert hall, for this second-generation sound system additionally uses four roof speakers – two in the front and two in the rear area of the roof. The effect: reflections, which come off the ceiling in a concert hall, are incorporated into the sound design of the E-Class Coupé in the same authentic manner. By contrast, other 3D sound systems dispense with roof speakers and use appropriate algorithms to simulate a 3D sound.

Apart from 3D Surround, four other preset sound modes can be selected to suit every taste and audio source:
Pure: audiophile sound reproduction with no additional effects, for unadulterated musical enjoyment
Live: appealing, dynamic sound background akin to live music
Easy listening: milder sound background for relaxed listening over longer periods
Surround: virtual surround sound
3D Surround: three-dimensional listening experience provided by the roof speakers

The technology of the Burmester® high-end 3D surround sound system uses 23 high-end speakers, two amplifiers with a total output of 1450 watts and individually controls all the speakers via separate channels and active diplexers.

Drive system and suspension
Sporty and comfortable driving pleasure
Powerful and efficient petrol and diesel engines, all equipped with ECO start/stop and complying with the Euro 6 emissions standard, provide for lively performance and great fun behind the wheel.

The available variants include a newly developed four-cylinder diesel engine.
On market launch of the E-Class Coupé there will initially be one diesel and three petrol engines available. Further engine variants and 4MATIC versions will follow.

New four-cylinder diesel engine
Designed to meet the future RDE limits, the four-cylinder diesel engine from the new family of Mercedes-Benz engines opens up a new dimension in efficiency.

With a displacement of around two litres, the new diesel engine delivers 143 kW/194 hp, while the E 220 d impresses with a combined NEDC average consumption of 4.0 litres per 100 kilometres. This is equivalent to CO2 emissions of 106 grams per kilometre. In addition, the four-cylinder with single-stage turbocharger and variable turbine geometry is distinguished by a high level of refinement.

Both the cylinder head and the crankcase are made of aluminium. The Mercedes-Benz-developed NANOSLIDE® surface coating efficiently reduces the friction between cylinder liner and steel piston.

Nine-speed automatic transmission
All models available at market launch are equipped as standard with the new 9GTRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission. It ensures fast gear changes and allows low engine revs. This has a particularly beneficial effect on efficiency and noise. From mid-2017, the range will be extended by the E 200 with a 6-speed manual transmission.

The DYNAMIC BODY CONTROL suspension with adjustable damping is optionally available. It, too, is set lower. Using a switch in the centre console for the standard DYNAMIC SELECT system, the driver can vary the damping characteristics of this suspension.

Furthermore, the highly sensitive and fast-responding AIR BODY CONTROL multi-chamber air suspension features all-round self-levelling for excellent ride comfort even with the vehicle loaded. It controls the ride height automatically depending on the speed and reduces fuel consumption on the motorway, for example, by lowering the vehicle.

When driving on rough roads or access roads, the ground clearance can also be increased at the push of a button using the ride height adjustment switch.

However, the DYNAMIC SELECT system not only makes it possible to select the suspension characteristics in combination with DYNAMIC BODY CONTROL and AIR BODY CONTROL, it also enables the driver to influence other vehicle settings – such as the throttle response, ECO start/stop function, shift points of the automatic transmission and more.

Depending on the equipment level, DYNAMIC SELECT provides the following transmission modes: Comfort, ECO, Sport, Sport + and Individual. “Individual” allows drivers to configure their own preferred vehicle settings.

Independent multilink suspension at front and rear
The agile handling is due in large part to the 4-link front axle, which releases the spring strut from wheel control duties. In addition, the four-link principle offers favourable axle kinematics. For example, it allows an improved camber change for higher cornering forces. As a result, the suspension responds more sensitively to steering movements and allows a sporty, agile driving style.

As components of the new front axle are made of aluminium, they weigh about two kilograms less than a corresponding steel design. This reduction in weight supports a sensitive response and contributes to the efficiency of the new E-Class Coupé.

An optimised multi-link independent rear suspension with 5 links ensures excellent wheel control qualities and supreme straight-line stability. The rear axle carrier and the spring control arms are made of forged aluminium. A large rear axle bearing contributes to improved isolation of vibrations and thus to the good NVH characteristics and ride quality.

Sporty steering feel
All models of the E-Class family are equipped as standard with a sporty, electromechanical Direct-Steer system. It combines speed-sensitive power assistance for the speed-sensitive steering with a steering ratio that varies according to the given steering angle. The power assistance for the rack-and-pinion steering gear is controlled on demand.

STEER CONTROL – steering assistance in critical situations
The E-Class Coupé is equipped with the STEER CONTROL steering assistance function as standard. It can help the driver to stabilise the vehicle in difficult handling situations. To this end, the electronics determine in which direction the driver has to steer to defuse a critical situation, and introduces a corresponding electric steering torque into the steering that the driver clearly perceives.

In this way STEER CONTROL provides the driver with prompts in which direction to steer in order to stabilise the vehicle. If the vehicle oversteers, the steering wheel provides the driver with the prompt for correct countersteering until the vehicle is safely back on course.

Fade-resistant brakes for short stopping distances
The ADAPTIVE BRAKE braking system with internally ventilated compound brake discs meets high standards in terms of stopping distance, response, fade resistance, directional stability and service life of the brake pads. Single or 4-piston sliding callipers on the front and rear axles with brake discs the size of which depend on the engine provide for rapid deceleration.

Body
Rigid basis thanks to aluminium hybrid construction
Bodyshell reinforcements ensure the high rigidity of the new E-Class Coupé, allowing agile, sporty handling characteristics.
Dispensing with a continuous, visible B-pillar allows a visually consistent side window line, which underscores the dynamic proportions of the E-Class Coupé. Nonetheless, to give the body structure the necessary rigidity, Mercedes engineers took additional measures in the areas of the side walls and especially the roof frame. The most important were as follows:
a three-section roof cross-member at the front, with an integrated reinforcing component,
a system of struts above the rear seat cross-member,
an additional double sleeve in the A-pillar,
side members with a larger cross-section than those in the Saloon,
and also greater material thicknesses and ultra-high strength materials in some areas.
Other measures ensure a low noise level that is exemplary in this segment. For example, the floor and firewall were given additional rebates to minimise low-frequency noises, especially road roar.
Intelligent material mix
The bodyshell is of aluminium hybrid construction. The major part of the bodyshell is of diecast aluminium and sheet steel. The front wings, bonnet and boot lid are of sheet aluminium. The proportion of materials in percent by volume (in brackets: percent by weight):
Aluminium (sheet metal and cast) 26 (11)
Hot-formed and partially hot-formed steel components % 13 (16)
Ultra-high-strength sheet steel 11 (13)
High-strength adhesives are used in large measure for strong joints between components, sometimes in combination with mechanical joining techniques. This also helps to increase the rigidity of the bodyshell.

Intelligent Drive
Next-generation driving assistance systems
Mercedes-Benz’s highly advanced assistance and safety systems enhance safety, comfort and driver relief to new levels.
Active Brake Assist is fitted as standard. Likewise included as standard are ATTENTION ASSIST with adjustable sensitivity, which can warn the driver of inattentiveness and drowsiness, and Crosswind Assist, which can assist the driver by substantially reducing the effects of strong crosswinds to prevent the vehicle from drifting too far off track.

The highlights of the optional Driving Assistance Package include the following:
The Distance Pilot DISTRONIC with Steering Pilot, it is not only able to keep the car at the correct distance behind vehicles in front on all types of road, but, for the first time, it can also automatically follow them at a speed of up to 210 km/h.

This can make life easier for the driver, who no longer needs to operate the brake or accelerator pedal during normal driving, and also receives plenty of steering assistance from the Steering Pilot – even on moderate bends.at speeds up to 130 km/h, as if in a swarm, the system can continue to actively help with the steering by taking account of surrounding vehicles and parallel structures, even if the lane markings are unclear or non-existent, e.g.at road works. The system therefore makes driving much easier, especially in traffic jams or heavy congestion. The extended restarting function greatly reduces driver stress, as it allows automatic moving-off within 30 seconds after stopping on motorways or major highways, thanks to DISTRONIC distance control.

As the latest generation of the front radar is heated, this additionally increases the availability of DISTRONIC distance control, especially in wintry conditions.

Further innovation designed to relieve stress: in combination with COMAND Online, the selectable subfunction Speed Limit Pilot can autonomously adjust the vehicle’s speed via DISTRONIC distance control in response to camera-detected speed limits, including gantries and signs at roadworks, or speed limits logged in the navigation system, e.g. 50 km/h in built-up areas or 100 km/h on country roads.

The impressive innovations amongst the assistance systems include Active Lane Change Assist. This radar and camera-based assistance system assists the driver when changing lanes on multi-lane roads, and can steer the vehicle into the lane selected by the driver – when overtaking, for example.

Once the driver has activated the indicators for at least two seconds, Active Lane Change Assist helps the driver to steer into the adjacent lane if it detects that the lane is unoccupied.

Active Emergency Stop Assist can brake the vehicle to a standstill in its lane if it detects that the driver is permanently not taking control while on the move. If there is no steering wheel movement over a longer period when the Steering Pilot is activated, the system gives the driver a visual and audible prompt to place his/her hands on the wheel.

If, after being repeatedly warned, the driver fails to react by steering, accelerating, braking or pressing a touch control button, the vehicle safely decelerates to a standstill in its lane and warns the traffic behind using the hazard warning flashers.

Active Brake Assist with cross-traffic function: compared with the standard version, it offers extended speed thresholds with regard to vehicles and pedestrians. It is also able to recognise crossing traffic moving at a maximum of half the car’s own speed on junctions, and brake autonomously if the driver fails to react.

The assistant can now also recognise hazardous situations at the end of traffic tailbacks where there is no room for evasive action, and brake autonomously much sooner in such situations. Consequently, it is possible to completely avoid accidents at speeds up to 100 km/h or substantially reduce the severity of accidents at speeds above this level.

Evasive Steering Assist: this system is the ideal complement to the pedestrian detection function of Active Brake Assist. If the driver deliberately or instinctively initiates an evasive manoeuvre in a hazardous situation, this function can add precisely calculated steering torque to support the movement of the steering wheel.

This helps the driver to avoid the pedestrian in a controlled manner while subsequently facilitating the straightening-up of the vehicle to allow the situation to be negotiated safely.

Advanced assistance systems: the intelligent assistance systems in the new Driver Assistance package also include proven systems that have been further developed in terms of their mode of operation and the sensors they use. Active Lane Keeping Assist is able to use one-sided braking intervention to help counter unintentional departure from a traffic lane.

This braking intervention always takes place when an uninterrupted lane marking is crossed unintentionally. Where the markings are interrupted, it only takes place if the radar sensors detect the risk of a collision in the adjacent lane, e.g. with oncoming traffic, overtaking vehicles or parallel traffic.

Active Blind Spot Assist can now also warn of the risk of a lateral collision in typical urban traffic at low speeds and, in addition, as before, correctively intervene at the last moment to prevent a collision at speeds above 30 km/h and activate the PRE-SAFE® belt tensioners. PRE-SAFE® PLUS as part of the Driving Assistance package can warn a vehicle behind of an impending rear-end collision by activating the hazard warning flashers at a high frequency.

In addition the occupants can be preventively fixed in their seats by tensioning the PRE-SAFE® belts. If the car is stationary, its brakes can be automatically locked. The functions of Traffic Sign Assist have also been extended with a no-entry warning function.

Furthermore, the range of new features in the new E-Class Coupé includes:
Remote Parking Pilot: Also new in the E-Class Coupé is the option to move the vehicle remotely into and out of garages and parking spaces using a smartphone app, enabling the occupants to enter and exit the car easily, even where space is very tight.

Car-to-X communication: in 2013, Mercedes-Benz was the first manufacturer to introduce widespread car-to-car networking in the form of a retrofit solution. In the new E-Class this is now followed by the logical next step, as the world’s first fully integrated Car-to-X solution goes into series production.

As a member of the EClass family, the E-Class Coupé also benefits from this future-oriented communication technology. The mobile phone-supported exchange of information with e.g. other vehicles further ahead can effectively allow the driver to “see around corners” or “through obstacles” well in advance.

This means that the driver receives an earlier warning than previously in the event of imminent danger, such as a broken down vehicle at the edge of the road or also in the event of heavy rain or black ice on the road ahead. In this case the new E-Class Coupé imultaneously acts as a receiver and a transmitter, since warning messages are conveyed automatically by evaluating vehicle statuses or manually by the driver into the Mercedes Cloud.

The Car-to-X warning messages are shown directly on the navigation map. Some warnings are also communicated to the driver by voice output, which is particularly useful where the road layout is unclear.

PRE-SAFE® Sound: this system is based on a human reflex in the inner ear, called the stapedius reflex. PRE-SAFE® Sound emits a short interference signal through the vehicle’s sound system if the risk of a collision is detected. This signal can trigger the natural reflex and thus prepare the occupants’ ears for the expected sound of the accident, in order to reduce the stress on the occupants.

High-resolution MULTIBEAM LED headlamps, each with 84 individually controlled high-performance LEDs, automatically illuminate the road with a hitherto unattainable, precise distribution of exceptionally bright light – without dazzling other road users. That is because this grid allows the light distribution of the left and right headlamps to be controlled separately and adapted to the changing situation on the road quickly and dynamically.

All functions of the Intelligent Light System in low-beam and high-beam mode can furthermore be depicted purely digitally and without mechanical actuators for the first time, including, as a world first, a purely electronically implemented active light function.

Digital Vehicle Key: This system uses Near Field Communication (HFC) technology and allows the driver’s smartphone to be used to open/close and start the vehicle.

History
E-Class Coupé with tradition
As an exclusive and sporty coupé, the latest member of the E-Class family can look back on an almost fifty-year history.

In 1968 Mercedes-Benz presented the first exclusive coupé variant in the medium-class model series. The Coupé models 250 C and 250 CE rounded the model range in the 114/115 series off at the top end. These models were generally known as the “stroke/eight” coupés. The basic technical concept and design of the new models closely followed the saloon models on which they were based.

The coupés had the same suspension, drive train and floor assembly as the model 250 Saloon, and even the body of the two variants was identical back to the A-pillars. There were clear differences from the A-pillars to the rear: The Coupé had a more angled windscreen and a 45 mm lower roof than the Saloon, and of course had two doors.

Even then, the front and rear side windows were frameless, with no continuous Bpillar, and fully retractable – a typical Mercedes-Benz coupé feature to this day.

Series 123 coupés, 1977 to -1985
In March 1977, as the successor to the “stroke/eight” coupés of the 114 series, Mercedes-Benz presented the Coupé variant of the 123 series at the Geneva Motor Show. This was likewise closely related to the Saloon in technical and stylistic terms.

In contrast to the “stroke/eight” coupés, which were based on the unshortened floor assembly of their four-door counterparts, the wheelbase of the new two-door variants was reduced by 85 millimetres compared to the Saloon. This allowed more dynamic cornering characteristics and more distinctive styling for the coupé variant, and a more homogeneous and generally attractive design compared to the preceding model.

Series 124 coupés, 1987 to -1996
In March 1987 a Coupé variant of the 124 series was presented at the Geneva Motor Show. Like the coupés of the 123 series, this was closely related to the Saloon in technical and stylistic terms. On the basis of the four-door variant’s floor assembly, the wheelbase was again shortened by 85 mm in the interests of a coupé-like character.

As in the preceding model, the body construction and design therefore represented a completely distinctive variant. Features in common with the Saloon were restricted to the front section and tail lights. One characteristic design feature that marked the autonomy of the coupés versus the other body variants were the protective side strips with integrated side sill claddings.

The major stylistic features of the 124-series coupés remained practically unchanged even over several model facelifts. The most prominent visual change was the redesigned radiator grille in 1993.

This became known as the “badge radiator” and was harmoniously integrated into the bonnet with a much slimmer chrome surround; the Mercedes star was mounted on the bonnet, as in the S-Class Saloon. From 1993 the coupé models in the 124 series were given the designation E-Class Coupé.

CLK-Class Coupés of the 208 series, 1997 – 2002
In January 1997 the Mercedes-Benz CLK celebrated its world premiere as the successor at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. For the first time at Daimler-Benz, the CLK Coupé was developed as a completely autonomous model series.

Technically it was in many respects based on the C-Class Saloon, sharing the same floor assembly and major components. Nonetheless, numerous coupé-specific modifications and, not least, the fundamentally new body design reaffirmed the autonomy of the CLK.

For the first time it showed a completely new interpretation of the Mercedes “face”, which was now characterised by four elliptical headlamps, more pronounced wings and a slim radiator grille. Moreover, the CLK models were equipped with numerous technical innovations for further improved safety, comfort and economy.

CLK-Class Coupés of the 209 series, 2002 – 2009
Mercedes-Benz continued its longstanding coupé tradition with a stylistically intrigueing and technically sophisticated model in spring 2002.

The new CLK Coupé represented a fully autonomous model series in the Mercedes-Benz passenger car range, and emphasised this role with design features that were new to the last detail: Striking styling features such as the continuous band formed by the frameless, fully retractable side windows, the louvred radiator grille with a centrally positioned Mercedes star as a typical brand feature, the reinterpreted twin-headlamp front section and the graceful coupé roof marked this CLK Class out as a self-assured character.

A newly developed suspension, more powerful engines and technically refined optional extras from top-of-the-range Mercedes-Benz models made for an unrivalled driving experience in this vehicle class.

E-Class Coupé – 2009 – 2017
In 2009 Mercedes-Benz presented the new E-Class Coupé at the Geneva Motor Show, the Saloon having been presented just a few weeks before.

This attractive two-door model adopted the trailblazing technology of the E-Class. The Coupé also showed its close relationship with the Saloon in its striking design, with the reinterpreted twin-headlamp front section and prominent lines creating a self-assured, masculine presence.

Equipped with drowsiness detection, preventive occupant protection, an active bonnet and up to nine airbags, the E-Class Coupé set the standards in this vehicle class when it came to safety.

Adaptive high beam control, traffic sign recognition and an automatic emergency braking system were other new developments for safe driving with which the new Coupé excelled.
