The new S-Class Coupé

Mercedes-Benz S 500 4MATIC Coupé (C 217) 2013, Mercedes-Benz S

An aesthetic, exclusive high-end coupé

Stylistically self-assured presence, exclusive appointments and refined sportiness – the new S-Class Coupé from Mercedes-Benz combines the classic proportions of a large, sporty coupé with modern luxury and state-of-the art technology.

As a world première, the breathtaking two-door coupé can be optionally equipped with the MAGIC BODY CONTROL suspension system with curve tilting function.

Additional technical highlights are the head-up display and the touch pad feature. Optionally available expressive headlamps, each featuring 47 Swarovski crystals, produce a uniquely striking appearance.

“As exclusive as it gets – the ultimate in aesthetic sportiness”, stresses Ola Källenius, Member of the Divisional Board, Mercedes-Benz Cars Sales.

“The breathtaking design of the Concept S-Class Coupé marked by sporty-classic proportions and sensual purity is transferred to the series-production S‑Class Coupé virtually unaltered.

The large coupé has always been the supreme pinnacle of our model range and that’s why it’s now called the “S‑Class” again.”

“The world premiere of the active curve tilting function demonstrates the possibilities offered by Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive,” notes Prof Dr Thomas Weber, member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG with responsibility for Corporate Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development.

Mercedes-Benz S 500 4MATIC Coupé Edition 1 (C 217) 2013

“The vehicle leans into bends much like a motorcyclist, thereby reducing the lateral acceleration acting on the vehicle’s occupants. On country roads in particular, this means greater driving pleasure and ride comfort for our customers.”

The new S-Class Coupé will have its world première at the Geneva International Motor Show (6 – 16 March 2014); distribution to dealerships is scheduled for the second half of 2014.

The two-door car is available with a 4663 cc V8 biturbo engine.

The S 500 Coupé has a nominal output of 335 kW (455 hp), its torque level peaks at 700 Nm. The sporty motoring experience is significantly enhanced by the emotional sound produced by the exhaust system.

2015 S-Class Coupe

MAGIC BODY CONTROL, the first “suspension with eyes”, had its world première in the S-Class. With the curve tilting function the Coupé introduces a further world first for series-production cars: The Coupé leans into bends in a manner similar to a motorcyclist or skier.

The lateral acceleration acting upon occupants is reduced in a way akin to when driving in a steep curve, and passengers sit more firmly. On country roads in particular, the new curve tilting function enhances motoring enjoyment and comfort.

Like the S-Class Saloon, the new Coupé is available with numerous new assistance systems that make driving even more comfortable and safer.

The “Intelligent Drive” systems include, among other things the PRE-SAFE® brake with pedestrian detection, DISTRONIC PLUS with Steer Assist and Stop&Go Pilot, BAS PLUS with junction assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Adaptive High-beam Assist Plus and Night View Assist Plus.

2015 S-Class Coupe

COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS features an additional function apart from the adaptive brake assistant, which provides collision protection from a speed of 7 km/h: if there remains a danger of collision and the driver fails to respond, the system can carry out an autonomous braking manoeuvre at speeds of up to 105 km/h, thereby reducing the severity of collisions with slower or stopping vehicles.

The system also brakes in response to stationary vehicles at a speed of up to 50 km/h, and is able to prevent rear-end collisions at up to 40 km/h.

As in the saloon, the PRE-SAFE® preventive occupant protection system has been expanded through the inclusion of PRE-SAFE® PLUS. PRE-SAFE® PLUS can recognise an imminent rear-end collision and warn following traffic by flashing the rear hazard warning lights at a high frequency.

If the danger of a collision persists, the system can also firmly apply the parking brake on the vehicle stationary and thus minimise the risk of whiplash injuries by reducing the forward jolt caused by an impact from the rear.

Mercedes-Benz S 500 4MATIC Coupé Edition 1 (C 217) 2013

Numerous optional equipment features are available to make the interior of the S-Class Coupé exceptionally luxurious and comfortable.

For example, the AIR‑BALANCE package including the components “fragrancing” and “ionisation” is available, as is the electric armrest heating as a component of the Warmth Comfort package.

If the vehicle is equipped with the optional Seat Comfort package, the front seats feature the ENERGIZING massage function based on the hot-stone principle.

In cooperation with high-end audio specialists Burmester, two especially high-value audio systems have been developed: the Burmester® surround sound system and the Burmester® High-End 3D surround sound system.

Design: sensual purity at its most beguiling

Sensual purity as an expression of modern luxury – this was the focus for the designers, and is the design philosophy of Mercedes-Benz. The aim is to create clear contours and smooth surfaces that showcase high tech while radiating emotional appeal.

The sensual purity is reflected in the core design values of tradition, emotion and progressivism. These make up the guiding star, and are accentuated differently depending on the model.

Mercedes-Benz creates a bridge between modernity and the avant-garde, between tradition and progressivism. Each model series has an assigned role and a very specific character, depending on the attributes on which the design focuses.

And yet a Mercedes-Benz is always recognisable as a Mercedes-Benz. Because in addition to incorporating new stylistic developments, and in the interests of keeping tradition alive, the designers draw from a gene-pool of styling features typical of the brand.

2015 S-Class Coupe

“Our new S-Class Coupé is one of the most gorgeous coupés of all times, representing the most radical aesthetic departure from its predecessor,” says Gorden Wagener, Vice President Daimler AG.

“The sensuous flowing silhouette in interplay with the clear progressive design language forms a perfect symbiosis and expresses our philosophy of sensual purity with pithy precision.”

The exterior: flowing profile of perfect proportions

The flowing profile of the S-Class Coupé embodies sensual purity in a modern way. It is characterised by typical rear-wheel-drive proportions, emphasised by the hallmark Mercedes dropping line.

The long bonnet with pronounced lines and powerdomes, the low greenhouse with high beltline, the accentuated wheel arches as well as the large wheels (18- to 20-inch) and the broad visual effect created by the rear reinforce the S-Class Coupé’s aspirations as a masterpiece of automotive refinement.

Mercedes-Benz S 500 4MATIC Coupé (C 217) 2013

With a wheelbase of 2945 mm, the Coupé is 5027 mm long, with a width of 1899 mm and a height of 1411 mm.

Its convexandconcave modelled surfaces lend the S-Class Coupé a sensuous character. The sculpted appearance lends it classic elegance that forms a perfect symbiosis with the modern-progressive design idiom.

The view from the side is marked by the dropping line in keeping with the emotional character of the vehicle. It underscores the brand-typical proportions like a signature. The lines are deliberately reduced to the basics. This creates a sensual, timeless purity.

The creative interaction of diverse design elements lends the S-Class Coupé a superior, self-confident front: in the centre of the vehicle front end is the further-evolved three-dimensional diamond radiator grille, whose structure is defined by rectangular, chrome-plated elements. It incorporates the central Mercedes three-pointed star and one louvre.

2015 S-Class Coupe

The full-LED headlamps with their iconic eyebrows as daytime running lamps lend it an extremely self-assured and distinctive gaze. On the S-Class Coupé the eyebrows have been further refined with a semi-circular counter-curve.

In combination with the standard LED Intelligent Light System, unique headlamps with no less than 47 Swarovski crystals are available. 17 angular crystals form the flare-shaped daytime running lamps, with 30 round-shaped crystals making up the turn indicator lamps.

The side profile is defined by the dome-shaped stretched roof line and the frameless doors. An elegant 3D continuous chrome frame surrounds the glass areas that are uninterrupted by B-pillars. This underscores the Mercedes-typical coupé look.

A muscle above the rear axle extending from the side wall generates a sense of lightness and dynamic spirit even at a standstill. The positively arched surfaces and lines of the side walls flow into the rear end with a dramatic tapered effect.

The rear end with its surfaces, broad shoulders and distinctive character lines rounds off the emotive overall appearance. Moving the license plate mounting to the lower part of the rear bumper is a particularly striking modification.

It allows the boot lid to be made especially sleek in this area. The three-pointed star is, so to say, free-standing and can thus be made more prominent for greater effect. In addition it pivots outwards in order to locate the reversing camera and the optional 360° camera in an elegantly functional manner.

The arrangement of the LEDs in two horizontal rows in the two-piece tail lamps reveals cutting-edge technology and underscores the sporty character of the vehicle rear, careful attention to detail and the car’s premium value. Form and function fuse into a perfect unity.

Part of the light functions is located in the wings, the other in the boot lid. This characteristic arrangement makes the vehicle highly recognisable by night, too.

The two-part rear bumper underscores the sportiness indicated by the front design. The diffusor, painted in high-sheen black, meets in equal measure the requirements made by aerodynamics and by design.

Below it there is, as in the front bumper, a horizontal wing in silver look. Integrated in the diffusor are the premium-quality tailpipes.

Mercedes-Benz S 500 4MATIC Coupé (C 217) 2013

The S-Class Coupé features a panoramic roof extending over two-thirds of the entire vehicle roof; with a surface area of around 1.32 m2, it appears almost 150 percent larger than on the predecessor model. MAGIC SKY CONTROL makes it possible to switch the transparency of the roof at the push of a button, from light to dark.

When light, the roof is almost completely transparent and allows an open-air experience, even in the coldest weather. When dark, light transmission i.e. the proportion of outside light that is allowed through into the interior, is reduced to less than 1% and thus effectively diminishes heating up of the vehicle.

In addition, it is possible to shade the interior completely by means of a roller blind.

The interior: modern luxury as avant-garde design

The interior design of the new S-Class Coupé is an expression of the Mercedes-Benz design idiom – sensual purity. An enthralling combination of sculptural sensuous volume elements and components, and the clear geometry of its basic architecture create an avant-garde design idiom.

A high class appeal, quality workmanship and exceptional touch and feel are a treat for the passengers’ senses, so that the car’s interior represents the highest level of “modern luxury”.

The S-Class Coupé’s dashboard fascinates with its spectacular architecture, giving rise to a vehicle of unique character in the upper coupé segment. The dashboard is divided into a very clear top-layer section with an expansive “wrap-around” effect extending to the doors, and an extremely low, sculptural “floating” lower section.

2015 S-Class Coupe

This striking architecture was made possible by repositioning the airbag to a completely new low location. This concept enables the large, two-part wide-screen format TFT display to be placed in a prominent “hovering” position in front of this trim surface.

In addition, it is stylishly highlighted with an ambience lighting corona. Under the display, the sporty elevated centre console extends to the vehicle rear. All lids and armrests are lavishly covered in leather.

The new “Super Sport” steering wheel impresses with its powerful, galvanised spokes which create maximum depth for the steering wheel, as if they flowed out from the steering column.

The use of the finest materials, surfaces, colour combinations and seam designs contributes towards achieving a truly exclusive car interior. Air vents, switches, belt extender rosette and trim elements are in electroplated “Silver Shadow”.

This gives the trim elements a particularly high value appeal and enhances the three-dimensional effect of their surfaces.

In front of the armrest the touchpad (optional) can be found, with its black high-sheen surface and chrome-look surround. As on a smartphone, the touchpad allows all the head-unit functions to be operated using finger gestures.

The touchpad also permits letters, numbers and special characters to be entered in handwriting – in any of the head unit’s languages. Diverse controls, e.g. for the multi-media system, are arrayed as keys in a semicircle in front of the central control element.

Both the front and the rear seats have a pronounced sporty character, the two rear seats are designed as individual seats. The Exclusive package optionally includes seats in Exclusive nappa designo leather with a striking diamond backstitching pattern on backrests and seating surfaces.

Mercedes-Benz S 63 AMG Coupé (C 217) 2014

The front-seat seatbelts are integrated in the rear side panelling without interrupting the waistline with windows open; seatbelt extenders make them easily accessible for the seat occupants.

There is a fluid transition between the doors and the rear side panelling, emphasising the vehicle’s well-being quality.

Here too, surfaces and controls are masterfully executed in top-quality materials; the configuration with the Burmester® surround sound system and Burmester® High-End 3D surround sound system offers a special highlight in form and function.

New interior colours such as Bengal red, saddle brown and porcelain allow individualisation of the interior. The standard ambience lighting with several lighting moods provides the corresponding wellness character. The customer can choose from seven lighting moods.

Less distraction: head-up display

The optional head-up display brings important information directly into the driver’s field of vision, presenting it on the windscreen to ensure less distraction from the traffic situation. The system informs about vehicle speed, speed limits, navigation instructions and driving assistance system messages.

The technical basis for this system is a specular optics system and a full-colour display module with a resolution of 480 x 240 pixels, operating with high-power LEDs.

They project the virtual image, which measures around 21 x 7 centimetres, into the driver’s field of vision where it appears to float around two metres away above the bonnet.

The resolution of more than 60 pixels per degree of viewing angle ensures a needle-sharp image. A special light sensor located near the top edge of the roof automatically adjusts the brightness of the head-up display to the exterior lighting conditions.

Lower transversal forces: active curve tilting function

MAGIC BODY CONTROL, the first “suspension with eyes”, had its world première in the S-Class. With the curve tilting function the Coupé introduces a further world first for series-production cars: The curve tilting function makes the Coupé lean into bends in a manner similar to a motorcyclist or skier.

The lateral acceleration acting upon occupants is reduced in a way akin to when driving in a steep curve, and passengers sit more firmly. On country roads in particular, the new curve tilting function enhances motoring enjoyment and comfort.

The object is not to reach higher speeds, but to produce a more pleasant motoring experience.

The MAGIC BODY CONTROL suspension system, optionally available for the S 500 Coupé includes, apart from the Active Body Control (ABC) and ROAD SURFACE SCAN functions, the new curve tilting function.

With Active Body Control the suspension struts are equipped with hydraulic cylinders (so‑called plungers), in order to adjust the force in each strut individually. Depending on the curve driven, the curve tilting function shifts the base point of each individual strut.

Mercedes-Benz S 63 AMG Coupé (C 217) 2014

This allows the vehicle to incline automatically and continuously in fractions of a second and to angles of up to 2.5 degrees in curves – depending on the road angle and vehicle speed.

The innovative suspension system detects curves using both a stereo camera behind the windscreen, registering the curvature of the road up to 15 metres ahead, and an additional transversal acceleration sensor.

The curve tilting function can be selected as one of three drive modes using the ABC switch; it is active in the speed range from 30 to 180 km/h.

Emotive-sporty sound: exhaust system with flaps

The emotive sound of the exhaust system makes a decisive contribution to the sporty driving experience. The deeper sound components ensure a fuller, sportier sound. In the transversally positioned rear silencer of the twin-pipe exhaust system there are two flaps that can be opened and closed pneumatically depending on the engine speed.

When the flaps are open the exhaust gases are conducted through the rear silencer along a different path so that the vehicle sound becomes more powerful. The switching point of the flaps depends upon the drive programme selected – in the S programme the flaps open earlier than in the E programme.

As soon as the S-Class Coupé engine starts, the power of its sound can be heard.

A long tradition: large coupés from Mercedes-Benz

The history of the large post-war Mercedes coupés dates back to the year 1952, when Mercedes-Benz launched the legendary 300 S Coupé – a “car for the world’s elite” as the automotive press of the time judged.

It was followed in 1956 by the 220 S Coupé of model series W 180, which created a sensation in particular due to its self-supporting pontoon body.

From 1961 to 1971 the long-drawn out elegant Coupé of model series W111/W112 enthralled no less than 29,918 highly discerning customers, who were able to choose between the Type 220 SEb Coupé six-cylinder models and the Type 280 SE 3.5 Coupé eight-cylinder models.

The SEC coupés of model series C 216, which remained in the programme of the Stuttgart-based automotive brand for ten years and of which over 74,000 were sold, were based on the S-Class of 1981.

In 1992 the successor model (model series C 140) was presented at the Geneva Motor Show, also featuring for the first time as a S 600 Coupé with a 290 kW (394 hp) twelve-cylinder engine. It was to be the car in which the Electronic Stability Program ESP® had its world première in 1995.

Later on this coupé was renamed “CL-Class”. Another forefather of the new S-Class Coupé celebrated its world première under this name in March 1999. With pioneering innovations such as active ABC suspension (Active Body Control) and bi-xenon headlamps this two-door car set new standards.

Supreme exclusivity and sophisticated design combined with trend-setting state-of-the-art technology were combined in the last CL-Class (2006). This luxury coupé opened up a new dimension of vehicle safety with the introduction of the PRE-SAFE® brakes.

Beyond this, Mercedes innovations such as the Intelligent Light System with five light functions and PRE-SAFE® preventive occupant safety were also part of the vehicle’s standard equipment.

The new S-Class Coupé and its innovations seamlessly continue the tradition of large coupés into the future.

Mercedes-Benz S 600

New top model from Mercedes-Benz

No other car lives up to the standards so famously set by company founder Gottlieb Daimler quite as comprehensively as the top model from Mercedes‑Benz.

The S 600 with V12 biturbo engine is the top model in the already successfully established S-Class and is available exclusively with long wheelbase and with a luxurious package of equipment and appointments.

Its performance data: 390 kW (530 hp) and 830 Nm of torque. But the S-Class is about to get even better in other ways, too: the models in the current range will be upgraded with the addition of a head-up display, touchpad and COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS.

“The S-Class has always been the embodiment of our claim to deliver the very best in terms of both technology and design” emphasised Ola Källenius, Member of the Divisional Board, Mercedes-Benz Cars Sales.

“And our flagship model, the S 600, epitomises the focus of our development work, the ‘Essence of Luxury’, in a way that no other model can. Our customers in North America and Asia in particular will enjoy this new top model with its exciting V12 engine.”

With an output of 390 kW (530 hp), the V12 biturbo engine in the S 600 packs a bigger punch than its predecessor did with 380 kW (517 hp). The displacement of the engine has increased from 5513 to 5980 cc.

Mercedes-Benz S 63 AMG Coupé (C 217) 2014

The maximum torque of 830 Nm is available from 1900 rpm. The S 600 now for the first time features the ECO start/stop function as standard, while it also meets the Euro 6 emissions standard.

The combined fuel consumption of the S 600 stands at 11.1 litres/100 km – 21 percent lower than that of its predecessor (14.1 l/100 km).

The most important features of the engine at a glance:

  • All-aluminium crankcase
  • One-piece chain drive
  • Forged crankshaft in high-grade quenched and tempered steel
  • Modified forged pistons
  • New engine control unit
  • New dedicated ignition coil with twin-spark ignition
  • Cam follower
  • Two intake and one outlet valves (three-valve technology)
  • Hollow-stem outlet valves, filled with sodium
  • Low-temperature cooling-water circulation with separate expansion reservoir.

The comprehensive standard specification of the S 600 reinforces its role as a flagship model. The LED Intelligent Light System, the MAGIC BODY CONTROL suspension with ROAD SURFACE SCAN and the Driving Assistance package Plus, for example, all come as standard.

The latter comprises Active Lane Keeping Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist, BAS PLUS with Cross-Traffic Assist, DISTRONIC PLUS with STEER CONTROL and Stop&Go Pilot, PRE-SAFE® Brake and PRE-SAFE® PLUS.

Legendary top-of-the-range engine

The figure “600” has long been a legend in the history of the automobile: the model 600 (W 100) launched in 1963 was the first passenger car from Mercedes-Benz to feature a V8 injection engine.

This same powerful (184 kW/250 hp) and refined engine was also used from 1967 on in the W 109 model series (in the top-of-the-range 300 SEL 6.3). Further top models to feature a V8 engine included the 450 SEL 6.9 from the model series 116 (210 kW/286 hp) and the 560 SE in the 126 series (220 kW/300 hp in the ECE version).

Mercedes-Benz S 63 AMG Coupé (C 217) 2014

The 600 SE model in the 140 model series of 1991 marked the introduction of the first twelve-cylinder engine as standard in a Mercedes-Benz passenger car.

The M 120 delivered 300 kW (408 hp) from a displacement of 6 litres and began a tradition of V12 units as the top-of-the-range engines in the S-Class. Since the 220 series, Mercedes-Benz has also offered especially sporty, AMG-optimised variants with V8 and V12 engines at the top of its S‑Class range, in the form of the S 63 AMG and S 65 AMG.

From March: additional fine touches in the new S-Class

From March, all the functions of the head unit can be controlled by fingertip gesture, as with a smartphone, from the new, optional touchpad. In addition, the touchpad allows letters, numbers and special characters to be entered in handwriting – in any language that is available on the head unit.

The touchpad thus offers an additional, full-function input option over and above the existing COMAND Controller and LINGUATRONIC.

A head-up display is also available as an option for the S-Class. As in a jet fighter, it displays important information directly in the driver’s field of view on the front windscreen, so ensuring that the driver’s attention is distracted less from the road ahead.

The system provides information on speed, speed limits and navigation instructions, for example.

Replacing COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST on the S-Class now is COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS as standard.

In addition to the adaptive Brake Assist system, which helps to protect against collisions at speeds of over 7 km/h, this system now features a further function: if the danger of collision persists and the driver fails to respond, the system is able to carry out autonomous braking at speeds of up to 105 km/h, thereby reducing the severity of collisions with slower or stopping vehicles.

The system also brakes in response to stationary vehicles at a speed of up to 50 km/h, and is able to prevent rear-end collisions at up to 40 km/h.

A clear windscreen even at sub-zero temperatures, without all the hassle of scraping, is now possible thanks to electric windscreen heating (optional extra). This is designed to work in conjunction with the air-conditioning blower and ensures clear forward visibility in practically no time at all.

The new Mercedes-Benz S 65 AMG

Driving performance in its perfect form

Twelve cylinders, twin-turbocharging, 463 kW (630 hp) of output and 1000 newton metres of torque – the new S 65 AMG sets new standards as the most powerful vehicle in its segment of the market.

Exceptional performance and outstanding dynamism – these are the hallmarks of the AMG 6.0-litre V12 biturbo engine. With its reduced fuel consumption and compliance with the EU 6 exhaust emissions standard, the new V12 saloon is fit for the future.

The AMG sports suspension based on MAGIC BODY CONTROL comes as standard with ROAD SURFACE SCAN, the world’s first suspension with eyes.

Mercedes-Benz S 500 4MATIC Coupé Edition 1 (C 217) 2013

It goes without saying that the S 65 AMG offers supreme exclusivity in design and equipment specification. Two innovations, the head-up display and the touchpad, represent further enhancements in terms of comfort and safety.

The S 65 AMG is the only high-performance 12-cylinder automobile from a German premium manufacturer – and it is a car with a pedigree: the first generation of the S 65 AMG was launched in 2003, with the second generation being produced from 2006 until 2013.

Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH: “Soon after the successful launch of the S 63 AMG, we are unveiling the new
S 65 AMG. Supreme exclusivity and incomparable dynamism provide the guarantee of a high fascination potential.

With the third generation of the S 65 AMG, we offer our loyal and discerning V12 customers a unique high-performance automobile.”

The AMG 6.0-litre V12 biturbo engine delivers 463 kW (630 hp) with a maximum torque of 1000 newton metres – figures that enable the S 65 AMG to outperform all other vehicles in its segment.

This superiority is highlighted by the car’s performance: the S 65 AMG accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds, with a top speed of 250 km/h (electronically limited).

Compared with the previous model, fuel consumption has been reduced by 2.4 litres per 100 kilometres (NEDC, combined). With a fuel consumption of
11.9 litres per 100 kilometres (NEDC, combined), the new S 65 AMG is the world’s most fuel-efficient V12 high-performance saloon in terms of power and torque.

The range-topping 12-cylinder model already meets the requirements of the EU6 emissions standard, which is not due to come into force until 2015.

Technical highlights of the AMG 6.0-litre V12 biturbo engine:

  • Biturbocharging
  • Aluminium crankcase
  • Forged crankshaft of high-grade alloy steel
  • Multi-spark ignition with 12 twin-spark ignition units
  • Air-to-water intercooler with low-temperature circuit
  • Alternator management
  • ECO start/stop function

AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC

As before in the SL 65 AMG high-performance roadster, AMG combines the 6.0-litre V12 biturbo engine with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC.

Unlike in the direct predecessor of the S 65 AMG, which featured an AMG SPEEDSHIFT five-speed automatic transmission, the seven-speed automatic transmission with its wide ratio spread guarantees a noticeably lower engine speed level.

Mercedes-Benz S 500 4MATIC Coupé (C 217) 2013

This makes a key contribution to reducing the vehicle’s fuel consumption. The efficiency of the power train is further significantly improved by the fuel-economy converter, reduced-friction bearings and transmission oil heat management.

The AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC has three individual driving programs, which can be selected at the press of a button in the centre
console: Controlled Efficiency (C), Sport (S) and Manual (M). In modes S and M the emphasis is on sportiness: maximum emotive appeal combined with truly perceivable dynamics is ensured by the brief, precisely defined cutback of ignition and injection during upshifts under full load; this shortens the shift times and lends an audibly more emotive tone to gearshifts.

The ECO start/stop function is always activated in transmission mode “C”.

Lithium-ion battery reduces weight by over 20 kilograms

Like the S 63 AMG, the S 65 AMG features a lithium-ion battery. This innovative technology offers numerous advantages over a conventional battery concept: with a capacity of 78 Ah, the lithium-ion battery replaces both the starter battery and the backup battery – resulting in a weight saving of over 20 kilograms.

The high-performance battery is relatively insensitive to cold temperatures and has compact dimensions. S 63 AMG and S 65 AMG are the world’s first volume-produced vehicles with such a battery concept.

AMG sports suspension with MAGIC BODY CONTROL

The S 65 AMG features as standard the AMG sports suspension based on MAGIC BODY CONTROL. The new S-Class is the first car in the world able to recognise road surface undulations in advance.

Mercedes-Benz S 63 AMG Coupé (C 217) 2014

If ROAD SURFACE SCAN detects such undulations with the help of the stereo camera, MAGIC BODY CONTROL adjusts the suspension in advance to suit the situation.

The “Comfort” and “Sport” modes are available for a driver-defined suspension setup. While AMG-specific elastokinematics on the 4-link front axle and multi-link independent rear suspension make for greater directness when a dynamic driving style is adopted, the AMG sports suspension based on MAGIC BODY CONTROL ensures the proverbial Mercedes long-distance comfort.

The S 65 AMG is equipped as standard with ESP® Dynamic Cornering Assist. Targeted braking intervention at the inside rear wheel results in defined cornering of the vehicle and ensures greater agility when taking corners at high speed. There is no irritating understeer when turning into corners.

AMG speed-sensitive sports steering with variable steering ratio

Electromechanical AMG speed-sensitive sports steering with variable steering ratio is the perfect complement this greatly enhances vehicle handling and agility while maintaining driving safety at high speeds.

In “Comfort” suspension mode, the AMG speed-sensitive sports steering enhances comfort by providing more steering assistance. If the “Sport” suspension setting is selected, on the other hand, the driver feels a more sportily stiff level of steering assistance.

The pre-programmed curves for power assistance enhance feedback from the roadway and steering precision.

AMG light-alloy wheels based on systematic lightweight construction

For the first time, the S 65 AMG is available exclusively with AMG forged light-alloy wheels. This design reduces weight while increasing strength. The result is lower unsprung masses, giving advantages in terms of handling and spring/damper element response.

In the standard specification, the S 65 AMG is fitted with AMG multi-spoke light-alloy wheels, ceramic, high-gloss polished – front: 8.5 x 20, rear: 9.5 x 20, tyre sizes 255/40 R 20 and 285/35 R 20.

Mercedes-Benz S 500 4MATIC Coupé Edition 1 (C 217) 2013

The exclusive forged wheels on the S 65 AMG fascinate through their exceptional design: each of the 16 spokes is twisted, which causes the light-catching contours to radiate to the centre of the wheel hub.

The effect: the wheel gives the impression of being even bigger. An additional high-grade detail is the screw-in, fully integrated wheel bolt cover of forged metal. Its shape is reminiscent of a centre lock as seen in motorsport. The design also allows an unobscured view of the AMG high-performance braking system.

Alternatively, three other AMG forged wheels of the same size are optionally available. The 10-spoke design is available painted in titanium grey and polished or painted in matt black with a high-sheen rim flange – and likewise features a screw-in, fully integrated wheel bolt cover of forged metal.

Alternatively, AMG forged wheels in a 5-twin-spoke design painted in titanium grey with a high-sheen finish and a black wheel bolt cover are available.

AMG ceramic high-performance composite braking system as an option

Extremely short stopping distances and rapid deceleration are a given for any AMG high-performance car. And the S 63 AMG is no exception as it is equipped with a weight-optimised AMG high-performance composite braking system.

An AMG ceramic high-performance composite braking system is also available as an option. The more than 20 percent lighter design ensures lower unsprung masses as well as enhanced driving dynamics, agility and ride comfort. In addition, the system has a longer service life, is more resistant to corrosion and has higher thermal stability.

The AMG ceramic high-performance composite braking system has front brake discs with a diameter of 420 millimetres and is recognisable by the “AMG Carbon Ceramic” logo on the specially painted brake callipers.

Design: Sensual clarity is combined with dynamism and exclusivity

The S 65 AMG shows off its exceptional status not just with regard to its technology, but also in terms of design. The sensual clarity typical of Mercedes-Benz, with its classic architecture and flowing profile, is combined with expressive elements typical of AMG.

Luxurious and stately, powerful and exclusive, dynamic and prestigious – the S 65 AMG is a true eye-catcher with a self-assured presence. The large, upright and distinctly three-dimensional V12 radiator grille with its six twin louvres in high-gloss chrome underlines the car’s special status.

An exciting contrast to this is provided by the front apron with its three large cooling air intakes. The front section sports the AMG-typical, stylised “A” to emphasise the powerful exclusivity of the S 65 AMG.

Further exclusive design features include the “V12 BITURBO” lettering on the wings and the “S 65 AMG” model badge on the boot lid – both in new, modern typography. The AMG sports exhaust system with its two chrome-plated, separate twin tailpipes is a source of fascination both visually and acoustically.

Exciting equipment and appointments together with supreme quality in the interior

Exclusivity and luxury, combined with emphatically sporty design elements – the interior of the S 65 AMG fascinates through its exceptional feel, highest-grade materials and exquisite quality.

The defining features are the upholstery in exclusive nappa leather with seat upholstery layout in an exclusive diamond-pattern design. The delineated perforations in the leather upholstery of the AMG sports seats are a special highlight: there are intentionally no perforations in the nappa leather wherever there is contrasting topstitching.

The result is extraordinarily neat seams and an unrivalled impression of quality. Other features of the Exclusive package include the nappa leather roof liner, leather-lined dashboard, door centre panels in a diamond-pattern design, leather-clad roof grab handles, additional wood trim and AMG stainless-steel door sill panels illuminated in white.

Customers ordering Exclusive nappa leather upholstery are able to choose between black, satin beige/espresso brown, nut brown/black, porcelain/black and crystal grey/seashell grey.

Exclusively developed AMG sports seats provide the guarantee of optimal long-distance comfort. Electric adjustment, memory function, seat heating and climate control are standard features.

As an additional bonus, newly contoured seat cushions and backrests improve lateral support when cornering at speed. High-quality AMG badges on all four seat backrests are part of the standard specification, while embossed AMG emblems can be found on the front and – in the case of individual rear seats – also on the rear centre console. Further AMG emblems are included on the trim of the seat backs.

The 2-spoke AMG sports steering wheel allows perfect vehicle control. The distinctly contoured steering wheel rim is covered with nappa leather, with perforated leather in the grip area.

The insert is provided with characteristic AMG lettering. Aluminium shift paddles allow manual gear selection. To the right of the AMG sports steering wheel between the air vents is a high-quality analogue clock in an exclusive IWC design: this features three-dimensional, milled metal hands and genuine metal appliqués on the dial. High-grade chrome-plated door pins with AMG logo round off the exquisite S 65 AMG interior.

AMG instrument cluster with animated round dials

The AMG instrument cluster with two animated round dials appears on the high-resolution TFT colour display. In addition to the AMG-specific lettering and the needles in red/silver, the typical AMG look includes the AMG logo in the speedometer with 360 km/h scale (left) and the “V12 BITURBO” lettering in the rev counter (right).

An animated AMG start-up display is shown on the right-hand display. The AMG main menu has a digital speedometer and a permanent gear display in the upper section.

In transmission mode “M”, the driver is also prompted to perform an upshift shortly before the rpm limit is reached. Two additional round dials provide information on the engine oil and transmission oil temperatures when the driver selects “Warm up” from the AMG menu.

“Set Up” displays the transmission and suspension mode as well as the activated ESP® mode. Visual feedback is by means of an animated S 65 AMG on the TFT display between speedometer and rev counter.

Head-up display for enhanced comfort and safety

Two new innovative developments are fitted in the S 65 AMG as standard: the head-up display and the touchpad. The head-up display projects important information such as vehicle speed, speed limits, navigation information, traffic signs and information from DISTRONIC PLUS onto the windscreen.

The virtual colour display of size 21 x 7 centimetres appears to float on the bonnet at a distance of about two metres from the driver. This means that the head-up display is perfectly positioned in the driver’s field of view.

He or she is able to take in relevant information without having to look away from what is happening on the road ahead. In addition, the display shows the digital speed, engine speed and currently selected gear.

In manual transmission mode, a coloured upshift bar and the possible gears for a manual gear change are projected onto the windscreen.

Innovative touchpad for significantly easier operation

The new, innovative Mercedes-Benz touchpad makes it significantly easier to operate radio, telephone and navigation system. Unlike in conventional systems, the touchpad makes it possible to operate all infotainment functions.

The input area is approximately 6.5 x 4.5 centimetres in size and is integrated into the handrest with a cover for the keypad. The touchpad can be controlled in the same way as a smartphone or tablet PC: it can recognise one- and two-finger gestures, swipe gestures and zoom gestures through intuitive widening and narrowing of the fingers.

It is also possible to enter letters, numbers and special characters using handwriting. Every language available in COMAND Online is possible. The touchpad is designed with high-quality surfaces in high-gloss black and silver shadow.

Another highlight is the new hand resting recognition feature: a three-dimensional sensor signal is evaluated in order to detect whether the driver’s hand is simply resting on the handrest or whether the driver is actually making an input with one or two fingers.

This prevents incorrect inputs and improves the safety of operation. The driver can choose at any time which input method they prefer. As an alternative to the touchpad, the driver can also use the COMAND controller and LINGUATRONIC for the control of radio, telephone and navigation system.

Intelligent Drive: new standards in safety

The S 65 AMG also sets new standards in terms of active and passive safety: what began with PRE-SAFE® ten years ago and continued with DISTRONIC PLUS is now leading to a new dimension in driving.

Comfort and safety have merged into one. Mercedes-Benz calls this “Intelligent Drive”. New systems make the new S-Class even more comfortable and safer:

  • Rear PRE-SAFE® package
  • Night View Assist Plus
